The Talbot update

Andrew Brown's "Someday I will treat you good blog" has some more insight on the development of The Talbot, including his views on Punch Taverns.

Personally, I've no problem with the development being led by Punch, which is such a big operation that you can pick positive or negative precedents from their portfolio, to suit your mood and your attitude to big business.

I too have concerns about the Punch Taverns takeover, but checking the SE23 forum regarding a recent Punch-pub transformation in Forest Hill makes for some really optimistic reading.

If, like The Honor Oak in SE23, the Talbot will be re-launched with a plan and knowledge of the local market, it could make for a great local. I suppose the key lies with whoever will manage the Talbot and whether they could convince Punch to invest in ideas akin with the community. It seems The Honor Oak achieved this by word-of-mouth and an open-minded landlord.

Let's hope the same forethought applies round our way...

I wonder whether we shouldn't rely on the landlord/Punch reading blogs and should see if we can do some real world stuff to let them know we're interested?

Either way, it can never be any worse than Albertine's, up the road on the cross roads of Wickham and Lewisham Way. What a wasted opportunity with all the moneyed couples living in the conservation area! They might as well have not bothered. I don't like slagging off local pubs, as I like to support the local businesses, but this pub is tired, dirty, and generally unwelcoming.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for a pub like Jam Circus or the Royal Albert on New Cross Road - top pubs! (both owned by same people!)

I totally agree Andrew. Other than going down in person, any idea how to find out who is involved and who to contact?

I've been down in person and I didn't manage to get much out of the guy behind the bar. I think going to Punch, as Andrew suggests is the right approach.

Nick and I have emailed Punch you can see what I said on my blog and it'd be great if others who felt similarly would also let them - and us - know.

It may deserve a separate thread but does anyone know anything about the derelict house on the corner of Lewisham Way/Tywhitt Road opposite the Talbot pub?

The Brockley Society once said they were investigating who owned the place but for those who don't have 20 years to wait, it may be that a quicker answer can be obtained through other channels.

An old woman lives inside or at least did until recently. I've noticed in the last two weeks that wooden boards have been placed across the front door - I don't know whether by the inhabitant or someone else.

And while we're on the topic, anyone know whether whoever owns the once-grand detached villa a couple of doors up from the Talbot is ever going to give the place a makeover? It would help if s/he just stopped using the front garden as a sanctuary for common weeds and discarded junk, but with a lick of paint the house would really improve the tone at that end of the street.

If we were Americans I think we'd volunteer to do it ourselves...

Hiya

I live at number 1 Tyrwhitt Road. Punch have suggested speaking to the current landlord about what's happening.

Re. the derelict house on the corner there isn't really enough space to post full details but at the moment it seems like the lady living there has moved out and this weekend there was someone starting to clean up in the small yard are at the back - was making very slow progress though!

I'll create a new article about the issues Hugh and Vikki have raised.
