Brockley Central is a community news and discussion site, which attempts to cover every aspect of life in Brockley, London SE4. It was first published in February 2007 and has been growing ever since (read a  February 2013 Brockley Central case study here).

For the purposes of this site, "Brockley" includes the area as far north as St John's, as far east as Tyrwhitt Road, as far south as Brockley Rise and as far west as Telegraph Hill. And, as Brockley doesn't exist in a vacuum, we also address Lewisham and London issues that are directly relevant to this area.

The site is edited by Brockley Nick.

Not sure if this is the same person or another antisocial idiot, but I was in my car at the lights at Wickham Road/Lewisham Way 2 weeks ago when a woman with 2 black and white cocker spaniels let her dogs crap in the middle of the pavement and then walked off. She looked like a perfectly respectable woman, couldn't believe it when I saw her do this. I couldn't say anything as I was in a queue of traffic, though the police in the patrol car behind also did nothing.

Little Nan's is small but perfectly formed - I know a couple of people who've had private parties there and have had a good experience. Might not be big enough for you though....

I was wondering if it's possible to start a topic (or restart if I'm too slow) about the lack of gyms around Brockley and see if there is any interest in trying to open one? There is this campaign to open one on Howson Rd (link below) which would be great but I'd be keen to see if it's possible to get one sooner. This is for sake of my waistline!

Might be a bit late now, but I had the same problem; locked into a 12-month contract on Three only to discover I didn't get any reception in my home (thick-walled Victorian stock, typical of Brockley). I phoned them up, they ran some tests and confirmed there were no problems with the existing mast(s) in the area. Once they'd done this, they sent me a Home Signal box which is basically a tiny mobile mast that runs over your broadband and gives you full signal indoors. I didn't have to pay anything for it, which was handy.

Anybody know anything about the new cafe in New Cross, I think it's 11 Lewisham Way - near The Thailand. I've driven passed it a few days, but not been able to investigate. Think it opened about a month ago. Looks nicely done.

Hello fellow Brockleians, I work freelance as a photographer and I am becoming quite bored of working from home. I was wondering if there was anyone out there who would consider sharing some sort of work space with me. We could even start a creative collective if there were enough people interested. I don't have any ideas on locations yet, apart from the Dragon Fly site that has opened just adjacent to the station, St Norberts side. Is it true that 2 for 1 offers which are normally valid when bought with a travelcard are not valid on travelcards issued at Brockley station because it is owned by London Overground? (I don't live near Brockley station ATM so it's not easy to nip by and ask... but I do rent a London Holiday let in Brockley and I want to be able to give tourists who stay there the correct advice). Has anyone got experience of buying a travelcard so they could take advantage of 2 for 1 rail offers and being told Brockley tickets are not valid? I've googled it but I'm getting conflicting info. Ta if anyone can shed light on this.

However it came to my attention from a lovely lady whose name I cant quite remember (apologies!) that there are no Crochet workshops in the Brockley / Lewisham area! I would like to know if there is really a market for this and how many people would be interested? I am based locally in Brockley, drop me a message on my email below or reply to this comment and I will send out some details to those who are interested? :)

Hello Brockley, letting you know that tomorrow there is an: Axe the Bedroom Tax demonstration, Saturday 25 January 12.00pm Location: Peckham Square SE15 5JT.

The Bedroom tax /Spare room subsidy was sold as a way of to achieve efficient use of a scarce resource – social housing, but it's become a policy that is pernicously punishing the poor. People have been plunged into rent arrears, disabled people in specially adapted homes have been forced to move, uprooted, by pressure.

The demonstration is about generating social justice and fairness across
our society.

Why is there is a bedroom tax but not a manision tax?

If you can please be there to support.

does anyone know the cost, and more importantly the reason for these highly informative signs that are popping up in hilly fields??

all they seem to show is that you can walk along the path that you are already walking along in the direction that you are already walking....

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152272458439181&set=gm.794206043942882&type=1&theater

Judge Rudy said...

of course, if this information about being able to walk where you are walking in the direction you are going is so vital that you need a sign to confirm it, maybe the council could help you find the sign that tells you this by indicating the location of the sign by attaching a sign on the adjacent lamp post indicating where the sign may be found...

NAT said...

To do it in braille might be useful, but then to find the braille signs? I did wonder, and glad I'm not the only one. Hilly Fields seems to be becoming a little cluttered with these, memorial benches and more light standards than seem nessecary.

Judge Rudy said...

the braille signs on council buildings always baffles me....

of course we need to make the lives of the blind easier, but if a blind person has made their way to the building, they are more than likely fully aware of what they do in said building, and, for them to know that there is a sign there to read (by touch) they must already know that they are in the right place....

Here's something we can do that can affect the future of aircraft noise in Brockley. It's something we need to influence now to affect the future of the area:

https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/fair-flights-paths-for-heathrow

It's a really important moment in Heathrow's history: for the first time in nearly 2 decades there is the possibility of changing flight paths across London. New guidance technology means that planes no longer have to align so far from the airport and this opens up new options. In many North American cities the technology has been used to channel planes along even narrower corridors which has been disastrous for residents beneath (there have been big protests). Heathrow could opt to do that here too and seal our fate. The alternative is to disperse flight paths over already affected areas in order to give everyone some respite. It is estimated that most areas already affected would get respite 50-75% of the time.

It's not a vain hope: Heathrow is working with HACAN and the more backing the Fairer Flight Paths campaign gets, the more hope we all have of quieter skies in the future.

So please go ahead & sign / circulate the petition!

The March for Homes - takes place on 31 January,
it will demonstrate that the housing crisis is not just about one estate, one dodgy landlord, one corrupt local authority, one greedy corporation. It’s not only about street homelessness, or only about people being moved out of area, or only about people who can no longer afford to live in the city they work in, in the community they grew up in. This is about the whole of London and beyond.

The demands are ,Rent Controls, An end to the demolition of quality council homes ,Affordable and secure homes for all, Cut rents not benefits, An end to the Bedroom Tax and welfare caps, New Council Houses, No scapegoating of migrants

People will be assembling at St Mary's Churchyard at midday.
Good opportunity to amplify your voice on housing issues.

Tonight: 6pm meet outside the Civic suite, Lewisham Town Hall for the Lobby against Cuts in Lewisham. £85million over 3 years, which represents 1/3rd of the council's budget will be cut.
Adult social care is due to receive hefty cuts. These are older people, perhaps with incontinence, people with mental health issues. That these people especially (as well as all the other cuts that will make life in Lewisham harder) have to shoulder the burden of the austerity programme is a social injustice and tonight we will make a stand about it. Lewisham Council last night voted 49/1 to ratify the 2015 budget, part of £85 million of cuts over the next 3 years. Council Tax will be frozen for the year. The sole vote in opposition was Cllr Coughlan (Green) Brockley Ward

Why is there always a lag between what appears in "Recent Comments" and what appears in the comments thread? Does anyone else get that? Right now I can see a comment by PeoplesAssembly in Recent Comments saying something about Lewisham Council ratifying something but it's not visible in the comments thread when you click it.... Am I doing something wrong?

Why is there such time lag between what appears in the comments section of a thread, and seeing that comment in 'recent comments'?

For completely self serving reasons, and because we're on the topic of schools and academies, could we revisit a post from three years ago about the planned Temple Grove free school within Haberdashers Hatcham College. Now it's been up and running for three years how is it going? Do they really do morning lessons in English and the same lessons in the afternoon but in German? Are there any plans to increase the capacity of the secondary as having two feeders will effectively close off any chance of getting in by distance.

Lewisham Southwark College (formerly known as Lewisham College, with a large site on Lewisham Way, in Brockley ward) is being threatened with £7million cuts, this will weaken the college if it goes through, 175 jobs and courses cut. There is a campaign, that held a lobby yesterday evening to ask the governnors to think again.

The campaign has a slogan "Spread the knowledge, Save our College"

A thread has been created on South East Central readers informed of what's going on http://www.southeastcentral.co.uk/threads/save-lewisham-southwark-college.8025/

Trying to read the comment of 'Devine Canine', on the dogs in hilly fields thread illustrates the limitations of Disqus with great clarity. The comment is in 'Recent Comments', but to find it on the thread, 145 comments have to be (re)negotiated. It's a bit like trying to find a reference in a very old book which exists in the footnotes and so cannot be seen in the index. Whoever came up with this way of running an internet forum deserves a Darwin Award.

Lewisham Deptford Candidates published - who is David Harvey and how do I get in touch to invite him to a hustings?

Headhunter said...

This always happens here.... Age old problems with the Disqus system.... I use ctrl F to find on page rather than negotiate all 150 odd comments....

You should invite Brian Harvey, he'd be more fun.

It's more a function of the 3000+ comments on this thread than anything else. It's not supposed to be used as a place for conversations - just suggestions.

A question to everyone here, are you ok with the sale of Royal Bank of Scotland, a deal which is expected to chalk up a loss to the taxpayer of between £7 - £13bn (current estimates)?

The cuts proposed to government spending are £12bn.

Hey all.

Just to let you know of an exciting local poetry competition.

The competition is free to enter and has been extended until 31st August - there may be an old date on the website but that will be changed soon.

There are prizes (exact prizes TBC) and the poems should be displayed in CroftonPark Library and maybe even the Ladywell and Crofton park stations.

Spread the word - the more entries the better!

Thanks,

Can I recommend a handyman? Kris has just finished boarding & insulating the rafters in my loft. He does tiling, decorating, carpentry work & teams up with high quality workmen to do kitchens & bathrooms. He works to the highest standards, is extremely neat, quiet and courteous. Someone you can trust to do a job well with very competitive prices. His number: 07853612304

A devastating piece on the current mayor of London, Boris Johnson in particular his decision despite advice from his own side against it, to buy 3 second hand water cannon from Germany, to police unrest in the capital.
Apart the serious risk of injury, including blindness to protestors, no fewer than 67 faults were identified with the vehicles

Hi everyone, has anyone else noticed the gang that's been hanging around the Gogi's shop these past few months on Brockley Rd, near St Andrews church? They've been extremely anti social. I've seen them spray painting (probably stolen) bikes, dealing drugs, driving their scooters the wrong way on the street and revving them, doing wheelies on the scooters, fighting, cat calling women. They leave rubbish around, are noisy until the early hours of the morning and are very intimidating.

It'd be great to start a discussion about this to see if anyone else has noticed them and if there is anything we can do! Doesn't seem like the Police are much help at all.
