Brockley Bites

Goodbye Maypole

The Maypole pub, which once graced the western exit of Brockley Station, is now gone, reduced to a pile of rubble, to be replaced with the Glasshouse. You'll all be glad to hear that Eternal Jerk Chicken is still standing proud though.

East London Line works ruin new year commute

Not for us, for users of Liverpool Street, whose services were disrupted today by overrunning work on the East London Line. We mention this only because a) with all sympathy for those commuters, it's nice to see that the builders are getting on with it and b) we are wondering whether anyone has yet noticed any impact from the ELL's closure on their journeys from Brockley, St John's and New Cross Gate?

I'm missing the East London Line. A short walk to New Cross and then you could get anywhere on the Tube network with Oyster Pre Pay.

I could have done with it on New Year's Eve!

Train home this evening was the most stuffed I have ever been in, but the lineside fire faffed up all the trains and it was the first train out to Brockley and Forest Hill for half an hour so I don't think I can blame that on the East London line closure.

I look forward to the signs on page 24 of this document appearing at a station near me!

good riddance to the Maypole! Hopefully Jerk Chicken or whatever it is will follow suit shortly

Is Jerk Chicken actually a business or is it just written on an old shed? I've never seen it 'open' or anyone go anywhere near it.

Hi Guys and Dolls

I've really enjoyed reading the comments on this website. I came on line to check out Brockley and its great to know that REAL people do live around here. I lived in Hilly Fields for more than 10 years and seen so many changes in Brockley. I am hopefully going to be one of the new breed of people with keen interest in improving our community. Quite frankly, I'm sick of the crowds in Lewisham central on a saturday and I think Brockley is the next best place to develop. Lets not fill it out with too many flats though. ..we need places to hang out too ( I'm not just talking pubs) developers should be challenged to give something back to the area everytime they win a bid. I also think the brockly business park needs a refit. what ype of people what to be seen doing business in a place that looks like a dump. I have a lot to say but I'll save the rest for later.

I totally agree, although dificult to 'create' a nice vibe. We have the Laban center nearby and Godsmith's, one of the country's best art colleges. Are Lewisham doing enough to keep them around here after they leave uni? Mind you they could do with emmploying a few less at the Toad's Mouth - I don't think counting is a strong point for art students.
