Brockley Central Drinks 2

Following the success of the first Brockley Central drinks and the recent, animated discussion of Brockley's best places for a night out, we think it's time to organise Brockley Central Drinks 2.

The drinks are open to anyone who fancies coming (not least because they will be in a pub and there will be no velvet ropes involved).

Last time, Brockley Jon and Nick, sat alone in the Wickham Arms staring balefully at the door for the first 45 minutes, waiting and wondering whether anyone would turn up. And it is with that in mind that we are waiting for Jon to confirm what date suits him, before committing to a fixture. However, it will be in February.

Please post below if you would be interested in coming along and if you have a venue preference. We have narrowed it down to a choice of two:

1. The Wickham Arms - served us well last time and is probably within easy walking distance of the majority of our readers. Big enough if lots of people turn up. Intimate enough if they don't.

2. Jam Circus - a popular venue with BC readers and a chance to spread our wings to the Crofton Park-side of Brockley. The management are enthusiastic contributors to BC.

Wickham Arms. The other place is in Crofton Park and some distance from the conservation area, and therefore frightful.

Jam Circus because its closer to my house and I have never been and want an excuse.

Nick, you should instigate a tender process whereby the various local pubs can fight over the privilege of hosting the BC drinks, offering freebies and preferential treatment or would that damage the unbiased reputation of BC?

Brockley Nick said...

I like your thinking Ed! Mind you, I think we might need to demonstrate that we can pull in more than 10 punters before we can start throwing our weight around ;)

Wickham first, it's nearest Circus second, further to go...

I need to try all the pubs in the area in preparation for when the Talbot shuts down...

Is it me or has the saga of the Talbot gone worryingly quiet again?

right - my (and my lovely GF's vote) go to JC. It's about 5 minutes walk from my door. simple.

so 3 votes for JC.

Me and the other half vote Wickham, Wickham, Wickham...! That's 4-3 for the Wickham Arms....

I say go where the "lovely GFs" wanna go... Jam Circus.

Can it be after Feb 10th tho as out of the country?!

I'll turn up if I'm in the country, galivanting between Helsinki and London at the moment. Not fussed where.

Ed. We can sign Chinese Wall Agreements and do site visits after a speculative RFI (Request for Information) to get a freebie junket (erm to remain sure we are impartial)...........

I've been to Jam Circus, and the Wickham looks a bit scary, so I'll vote Jam Circus. That is, if a fairly new person and a Deptfordian rather than a Brockleyan is allowed to attend...although I fully intend to move to Brockley some time in 2008!

I vote for the Wickham Arms because it is closer to my house! Not the 12th - 15th please as I am away.

so, by my count it's 5-5...

there's our 10 punters. looks like we have a piss up on our hands.

Moonbows??? it's inbetween the two.

James said...

Moonbows is always crowded....Jam Circus is much larger - but I'm not sure about heading so far south...will they understand us?

mg said...

Jam Circus! (It's nearer)

Pete said...

I should have said that I would be bringing my girlfriend and she wants to go to Jam Circus too.

If you went to WA last time, why not JC this time? Alternate between the two bits of Brockers?

Or is that excessively fair?!

I'll come to either, though the WA is about 10 doors away from me!

The alternative is the Royal Albert, but that's so far north I'll need to pack a flat cap and whippet ...

Provided that the date works for us count another two people in.

Wickham Arms is closer for any interlopers from Telegraph Hill.

Are you going to talk about pub closure issues and what FOCAS are trying to do about it? Seems apposite to the occasion.

Brockley Nick said...

@Tamsin. It will be a social event, with no agenda - just a chance to put faces to names and have a good night. I dare say that local issues will be one topic of conversation.

Anonymous said...

Yeah Tamsin I'm from T Hill and I certainly won't be buying you a drink now.

Brockley Nick said...

@Anon - Tamsin is from TH too! Don't worry Tamsin, I will.

Anonymous said...

Okay Tamsin, you're back in the 'circle of trust' but I've definately got my eye on you. (but not in a weird way)

Jam Circus sounds like a good bet. Been in once, months ago and wasn't convinced - may be more convivial with a crowd.

Kate said...

Yes please! (to drinks)

I don't mind either way re: venue, so put me down as a fence-sitter. Perhaps I'm leaning towards Jam Circus cos (shamefully) I've never been in there. And I think it's really good that their management are such prolific BC contributors.

Can the drinks not be during the last week of Feb please? I'll be in Andalucia.

Jam Circus needs to sort out its chips. The burger and pint I had there last summer were fine but spoilt by skinny, fat-sweating 'fries' - the sort pasty chavs grow up on.

Make them thick-cut and don't look back.

That is all.

brockley mutha said...

husband and I may well attend - depending on the date. i can't take a view on either venue, - we're not yet patrons of either of them.

Ade said...

as a TH interloper, my vote is for JC cos WA scares me!!

b. said...

wow - JC is so far ahead I've lost count.

WC - to check out(and support the refurb) and it's everso local for me.

tyrwhitt michael said...

I heard a rumour that Jam Circus does not sell real beer, only continental fizzy stuff in bottles. If this is true I may have to reconsider attending...

Richard said...

Hugh, the chips - skinny fries win I'm afraid. I'm a fan of chunky chips as much as the next person, but the fries are popular and continue to work for us. A possible consolation - we sell our own potato wedges, made with Maris Pipers, we'd be happy to upgrade a burger to include these instead of fries. Hope that helps.

Michael, real beer - we're not blessed with bar or cellar space and the fact is people like lager (which I will defend as not all being tasteless!). I understand the attraction of a cask beer, but at the moment I can offer bottled Bombardier or Timothy Taylor Landord. Admittedly more expensive, but you'll never get the end of a barrel! I won't write off finding a way of serving cask beer one day, let's see.

I don't wish to interfere with the BC drinks vote, but if you were to choose Jam Circus, I'll try to make sure I'm present on the night you are in. It would be nice to put names to faces.

tyrwhitt michael said...

Thank you Richard, I am glad you have bottled bitter as well as lager.

I am sure I will survive for at least one evening on bottles of Timmy Taylor.

Who said lager was tasteless?
I only said "fizzy"

Richard said...

Oops, apologies, 'tasteless' was my imagination playing tricks after seeing 'fizzy'!

Brockley Jon said...

You probably all think that the future of BC drinks hangs on my inability to organise my social calendar. That's true to an extent, but I did email Nick a while ago with some suggested dates in early Feb - just waiting for him to confirm. It will happen SOON! How are Tuesdays for people?

I am leaning towards Jam Circus, just to vary the venue, reward the management for their contributions on the blog, and also so we can mix it up with you Crofty Parkers.

Hugh said...

Us city drones won't get home till eight so Tuesday is fine if you lot stay till ten-ish.
