Have had a couple of takeaways in here before. Pretty much your typical Indian fare but the food was above average.
Wuth the exception of Cinnamon, most of the Curry houses in Brockley are average but the Essence has always been sub-standard. They have made a lot of changes internally but kept the same chef, unfortunately. I keep giving it another try but I think it's time to stop now.
It has been a long while since I've been here so can't comment - I go to Babur, which has won lots of awards: the takeaway is in SE4 but the restaurant (which does even better takeaways) is in SE23
Not great service, girlfriend asked for no onions they said OK, then the meal turned up with onions - she is allergic to onions. Food passable but not great.
I can't eat onions either, the Royal Tandoori (takeaway) next to Mr Lawrence always do me a lovely veggie biriani without any onions in. It's still Babur all the way for really great food though.
I've been using The Royal Tandoori since the Babur takeaway went down in quality a couple of years ago. Does anyone know if its improved?
Went to Babur lastnight and it was great, I not tried the takeaway but as for the Indian TakeAway on the corner opposite JAM was prob the worst I have ever had? what a waste of money for some bland slop with a cold nann... owell you live and learn....
I have recently returned to use this restaurant and have to say that the food is now absolutely excellent. as someone has said 'Above Average'.The Wednesday Banquet looks great value.Nick, can you do a review of this place soon?
Apologies, my last comment was about Essence Of India.
have just tried the essence of india for first time and it will definatley beour last. the service was poor as the whole time we were there the waiter spent his time talking to the only other table that was there. the food was just about edible except for the keema naan which was plain nasty! it was like salami stuffed in hard burned pizza bread!!! don't go whatever you do, you'll regret it!!! the best thing was the drink and the poppadoms!!!
i absolutely love this place , mainly cuz i dont like busy restaurants where u have to wait for ages for your order to be taken , but this little but great restaurant never dissapointed me . the food is wonderful , love the authentic taste , and it`s also value for money . the waiter it`s really friendly and helpful , so what else can u ask for ? i just love it !
....signed A. Manager. Essence of India, Brockley;)
terrible, the food is not horrendous but also not great bit like a curry soup! - the staff talk about people in their on language nastily noticed this 2 times I have been in there including using gora (not sure how to spell but know the meaning which is a racist way to call a white person)
