Last chance to sign the Hilly Fields petition

If you'd like to see some of the money available to upgrade Lewisham's children's play areas spent on Hilly Fields then today is your last chance to sign the online petition.

Campaigner Marcus Fox will be collating all of the signatures this afternoon, so please click here now to show your support. It only takes a few moments.

We've already collected more than 100 signatures this way, but it would be great to have even more.

100 people signed? That's brilliant.

We're up to 145, though I notice there are a few duplicates of people who obviously had a few problems with the site. That's probably 130 individuals, on top of the people who have already signed the physical petitions in local businesses around Brockley.

I'd be surprised if any other area in Lewisham has generated the same level of support.

I haven't been able to make it to the last couple of Hilly Fields Users' Group meetings, so I'm not quite clear if Marcus is working as part of or separate to that group? I know that HFUG have big plans for the play area and I believe are already putting a bid together, so would urge him to speak to Rachel from HFUG if he's not already. Second question is - what are you going to do with the petition when you have collected all the signatures? One of us cllrs would be more than happy to present it to the Mayor at the next Full Council meeting (June 30th) if you like. I am also submitting a petition on behalf of 120 residents of Foxborough Gardens asking for a play area on their estate.

@Sue - Marcus has been speaking to the HFUG, but I'm sure your offer to present the petition results would be welcome. I will email him with your contact details.

Are council meetings open to the public?

yes, and that goes for committee meetings and Mayor & Cabinet meetings as well as Full Council. Sometimes the press & public are excluded when confidential items on pink paper are discussed (often contracts/commercially sensitive info at M&C meetings) but otherwise they are held in public. There is a public gallery in the Council Chamber that you can watch the whole charade from. Brockley Central outing, perhaps?!

Big news - the tea hut has arrived at Hilly Fields! We need everyone to know about it. When we did the petition for the playground money, the most common comment was actually that people wanted a tea hut, so now it's there, PLEASE everyone use it! I went to the park today and saw it - unfortunately I didn't have any money so couldn't try it out but apparently they've been there all of this week so I'm sure another blogger can review it. I spoke to them - once there's more custom they're going to be in the park (up by the tennis courts/playground) from 10am till 8pm every day, and when the weather's good they're planning to do BBQs etc. They sell hot and cold drinks and food (today it was soup and stir-fried chicken, all freshly made that day in the hut). Everything is sold in recyclable/biodegradable containers. Please make sure this is a success, given that everyone has wanted it for so long.

I'm decidedly ambivalent about it actually - is there really that much demand?

Yes Kate, certainly the feedback we got from the 500 or so people who signed our petition is that they want somewhere to buy coffee etc while they're hanging out in the park/watching their children in the playground etc! I think it'll be great in the summer - people can stay in the park all day without having to plan ahead and come laden with cool box etc.
