Green shoots

The Brockley Cross Action Group is asking for volunteer help on Sunday "to help weed and finally mulch the two new flower beds on the Wickham Road Estate. The gang will be working between 11am and 5pm and would welcome any help offered.

Finishing the beds will allow them to concentrate on creating lovely new flowerbeds elsewhere in the area.

They will provide tools and refreshments and they are also holding out the prospect that you will be the first to hear some very exciting news about the Brockley Common project. They won't tell Brockley Central until afterwards!

Meet between Connifer and Pear Tree Houses, Brockley Road. Gloves and wellies recommended.

Aren't they meant to be clearing the scrub near Brockley station? They seem to have been at it since 2003.

Hugh, the wickham road estate is much more important to the BCAG than clearing up around the station.

They have already declared themselves the wider 'brockley ward' community group.

They have been sitting on £1k-£2k for about 3 yrs now to improve flowerbeds on Mantle Rd - still no action.

Why are why do the residents of the Wickham Road Estate not get on to the council? Failing that, roll your bloody sleeves up and do it yourselves.
That said, I have an awful lot of leaves in my garden, will the Wickhma Estate residents please come and clear them? I'd like a few bushes at the front while you're at it.

Why do people on benefits get all the breaks...

Careful - they are disadvantaged and tax needs to be spent on something.

It is up to BXAG to decide where they will spend the £1-2k they have been sitting on - they are not a govt organisation and therefore were not elected on a manifesto - if anyone wants them to spend their money differently, then join the group and change their priorities - see you all on sunday:)

Why is Brockley station still a mess?

The Cat Man said...

ade, thats just not true.

The 1-2k I was referring to actually is 'ring fenced' and was given to the BCAG from the telegraph hill ward localities fund (or the pre-cursor to that).

It is explicity to be spent on Mantle Rd or failing that, somewhere in the telegraph hill ward.

It wouldn't surprise me if 1) they have spent it in the brockley ward or 2) it has somehow expired and wasted it.

for what it is worth, I have even volunteered to help improve the flowerbeds on mantle road but despite the brief 'ill add you to the list' e-mail, nothing has ever been done!

That is also in addition to the BCAG not even responding to the councils planing notifications for either the 'grey battleship block' (Nicks words, not mine) or the new massive block proposed opposite.

The BCAG is purely an 'east side of the tracks' organisation.

Move east of the tracks then.

Or just move

The clue is surely in the name: the Brockley Cross Action Group. Brockley Cross is east and slightly north of the station. So this is the area on which they focus. If they wanted to work on the west side, they would call themselves the West Brockley Action Group. I think it's a bit ludicrous to criticise a group for not working in a particular area when it falls out of their remit.

I think peoples perception on what they cover is a problem. I have always assumed Brockley Cross referred to the area where Endwell Rd crosses the railway line i.e Tea Factory, double roundabout area down to Coulgate St but also shopping parade around Martins Yard and down towards the station entrance on the west side. I say the area around Martins Yard because someone puts hanging baskets on the lamp posts there as well which I doubt is the councils doing. The main projects listed on their website are east but if they had money for flower beds on mantle rd then they must have some input on the west. Maybe a thread on what areas they cover will help stop the criticism and give everyone a better understanding.

'Why is Brockley station still a mess?'

Have you seen the pile of free newspapers that people pick up and then just discard on the floor next to the recycling bin?

That's partly why.

The Cat Man said...

Drake, I think you are right.

Peoples perception is that the BCAG covers both east and west sides but the truth is it doesn't.

The BCAG themselves have expressed interest for both Mantle Rd and the new Martin Yard development which is frustrating as it means no real alternative for the 'west' of the station can exist or get up and running, whislt the BCAG stands by and does very little.

Why don't you do something then? If not with the groups support, by yourself or with a group of like minded individuals.

Great, now Andy will start his own group, if it's as popular as his blog we'll be in for BIG changes. Will we have to wear a uniform like the SS? You can knock their politics but you can't deny they were very smart.

Did anyone go to this or does anyone know about the breaking news on Brockley Common?
