Brockley Station works: The end is nigh?

Local councillor Dean Walton has another update on the works to the station entrance and footbridge. The promise is now that the ramp will open by the end of next week, with the steps opening 'in the next few weeks'.

Dean makes the very good point that communication with local residents and station users about the progress of the works has been completely non-existent. It is a considerable inconvenience for some, and would have been good to see the contractors using a little bit of nous to win some brownie points with some basic information.

How long has taken them to to build those steps? and more importantly- when is the bloody bridge re-opening?

This is NOTHING compared to the mess at Lewisham. When the boards went up in 2008, they proclaimed work would be finished by that autumn: then the boards disappeared.

Since then, the builders have made it harder and harder to actually board a train, blocking doors and narrowing walkways.

The latest estimate I've seen for an opening date is "late 2009". Of course, that may be in dog years ...

I hate the negative attitude Cllr Walton applies to his enquiries and reporting of the issue - if I was working for the relevant bodies I'd probably end up saying something that would lose me my job!

Yes, instead of complaining on his blog I wonder if he's actually collared the person/people in the council who have this responsibility?

Presumably he may have better access to these people than the rest of us.

one of the guys on the site told me he thought they'd be finished by the end of the week, but looking at it right now that doesn't seem that plausible.

What is actually happening at Lewisham station (apart from 'very little')? I've always wondered as the work has been going on as long as I've lived here.

Why don't you post these views on the Cllr's own blog where he can respond to your moans accordingly?

Oh, no anonymous option. Damn...

I bet brockley based skateboarders can't wait til next week then if the ramp is going to open but I can't see how the road will be back to normal yet as path and road look like they need reconstructing - I noticed when I came home that they have done a bit of timeteam job on the pavement so it is still there!

I'm gunna do a wheelie up it.

Surely if the Councillor said:

"I received an update from Lewisham's officers on 22 July:"

Which said:

"Dear All,

...and we can now confirm that the ramp section will be open by the end of next week."

Which means the end of this week, in other words Friday.

i'm sure it would've been quicker to demolish lewisham station completely and build it again rather than the bits-and-pieces work that's going on. it's all about lift-access to all the platforms mostly, plus supposedly the installation of ticket barriers. nothing to erase the horrible bottleneck of trying to get out of the station through those woefully narrow doors.

I passed there the other day at 3pm and no workmen where there at all, On other occasions it's been almost a question of 'how many men does it take to......' with one man working and three others standing around watching him.

The contractors must be laughing all the way to bank on this one. It is curious how the steps keep getting almost completed/done and then lo! some of the cladding is taken off and they have to be re-done. This has been going on for weeks. It's a shocker.

Why shouldn't Cllr Walton have a negative attitude? Presumably this attitude is the result of constant non-information and stalling from incompetents in the council's employ, and it's the same attitude his constituents will be experiencing.

LewishamLovely, you'll be pleased to hear that there is actually a proposal to restrict exiting from Lewisham station even further by closing the exits on platforms 3 and 4, to force everyone through the ticket barriers. Getting down that extremely narrow staircase on platform 4 is a challenge even now, so god knows how the station will cope if this restriction is put in. You do wonder sometimes if there are departments in these companies dedicated to making things as difficult and unpleasant for paying passengers as possible.

Is the Brockley ticket office/portacabin going to change at all?

Just to let you know, the footbridge at Brockley Station will reopen from 11am tomorrow (Friday 31st July).

Did they get the measurements wrong on the plans or something? That ramp is bloody massive! It's got to add a good minute and half to the very short journey from the street to the portacabin.
