Local cleaner recommendations

Reader Carolyn is looking for recommendations for good cleaners working in the area:

"I was wondering if it is possible to ask people if they know of a good local cleaner? I have recently had a rather bad experience but with kids, pets and a full time job don’t want to be put off and want to find someone else – a person not a company this time!"

Please use this thread to share your thoughts.

I'm also looking for a local one too.

I know someone who had a variety of cleaners for years, they eventually stopped when they got tired of things being broken or stolen.

good luck

I'm with a local agency now and none too impressed. Used to have a private cleaner who was excellent. So am also interested in recommendations.

Moving out in a few weeks and will almost certainly need someone to spend a few hours sprucing the place up a bit before the next tenant comes in, so again, recommendations very gratefully received.

There are a few recommendations on the Telegraph Hill boards - is that "local" enough :)

We get loads of flyers for cleaners and handymen etc through our door but no one is able to match my exacting standard! I just do my own cleaning.

Michael said...

I have had the same cleaner for five years, she has moved all over London with me, I can thoroughly recommend her. She is Braillian, very friendly and an excellent cleaner. She charges about ten pounds an hour.

If you would like me to put you in touch let me know and I'll email her number to you. She's cleaning for us on a Tuesday.

Anonymous said...

I am sure they could if you were prepared the appropiate pay.

What I find is that people think that can get things like cleaning done for next to nothing. £8ph is the minimum for cleaning a home.

I've just spoken to Cris our cleaner and she was happy for me to pass on her details. The number below is actually her sister's number (also named Cris, confusingly) she organises their business, so speak to her and she will help you.

I really can't recommend them enough. We've had an excellent, individual service for years now

8 pound an hour - the minimum wage is a fiver!

Anonymous said...

Cleaning someone's house is not a minimum wage job. To get people well as the physical effort, a cleaner in a home needs to have integrity and diplomacy to get a person with those attributes to make it worthwhile fo them equals minimum £8ph, otherwise do it yourself or take a risk with someone cheaper.

Maybe I'll Become A Cleaner said...

I pay £8.50 an hour and my friends and neighbours all pay between £8 and £9 an hour. However, I do think this is a very good wage, especially as it is often cash in hand. After tax, I don't actually earn that much more than that per hour (yes, I know I get holiday pay, sick pay etc) and although cleaning does require integrity etc, it is essentially an unskilled job.

Michael said...

That may be the case but a cleaner will be lucky to get as much as 5 hours work done a day. The rest of their time will be spent travelling around or waiting for the next appointment. The work can be inconsistent and often very mucky. I think the pay has to be based on that of unskilled freelance wages. Why shouldn't a cleaner get the same hourly rate as a temp who goes and sits on reception at company in town?

Anonymous said...

Which is £8 to £10 an hour, but that gets taxed.

Anonymous said...

People must be paid fairly for the work they do. If you exploit people then don't be surprised if the resentment that they'll naturally feel manifests in problems.

Michael said...

true, but that is working on the presumption that all cleaners don't declare their earnings.

Anyway...

For all of those who are looking for a cleaner, let me again recommend Cris. She and her sister have been cleaning for me for five years. They provide an excellent service and I'm sure prices are negotiable. You can call her on:

@Michael: "I have had the same cleaner for five years, she has moved all over London with me, I can thoroughly recommend her. She is Braillian."

You have a blind cleaner? Impressive :-)

Anonymous said...

Anonymous 16.37, are you suggesting that £8 - £9 an hour untaxed is exploitative? Or are you talking in general about the people who are moaning about their cleaners? If you worked out how much a nurse or a nursery nurse or a care home worker gets paid per hour, I think you'd be shocked! I think that in general, cleaners are well remunerated for what they do.

Anonymous said...

There was a sign in Shop on the Hill advertising a cleaner. When I asked Nicola she said it is someone who works there sometimes so it might be worth popping in.

Anonymous said...

Thank you for the suggestion Michael, I have left Cris a message. Thank you too David, I have had a look on 'thehill' link you gave and got a couple of other names from there so I will see who has time free etc.

On the pay conversation, I think you get what you pay for and if you don’t then you don’t pay a higher rate for long! It’s worth a little more if it buys you peace of mind while you are trying to juggle other things.

Thanks again. Carolyn

I pay 8.50 through an agency, 6 of which goes to the cleaner.

they aren't great but aren't bad. on time, hard working, not much initiative, they often do highly illogical things - hoovering then dusting for example.

friends use a cleaner who is 10 an hour but has great energy and initiative. she is basically a housekeeper manque. she knows her worth and they know who's boss(!)

Richard said...

When I moved into my flat it needed a real deep clean - looked clean on the surface, but piles of dust, grease-lined oven, Dyson vacuum rendered completely useless by old dirt etc etc. Took at least a couple of full days. Then our landlord, who lived there previously, told us he didn't know how to work the dishwasher because he had a cleaner! 1. Who leaves their dishes to the cleaner?! And 2. She was clearly taking it easy knowing full well the poor sap wouldn't notice - wash the dishes, wipe the sides, sit down & watch the tele.

You get what you pay for, but often also what you let people get away with.

Anonymous said...

Richard, I think your last sentence sums it up! I'm not hugely impressed with my cleaner but a) she comes when I'm out and it's hard to communicate with her as she doesn't speak good English and b) I think I have a certain amount of guilt about using a cleaner at all - my mother never had one and she managed, blah blah - and am aware that it's not the nicest or best paid of jobs. As a result, I don't really want to complain or tackle any issues I have with her. And of course, I don't want to antagonise her because she has a key to my house.

Anonymous said...

So what we are saying is that we are in thrall to our cleaners through a combination of guilt that we are steeping away from our class barriers (Mum did it her self) and fear that there may be some sort of retribution from a domestic help that we can barely communicate with.

Sounds about right for a 21st century quandry

helpful said...

If you pay the proper rate a) you're likely to get an English speaking person. b) you'll feel no guilt because... you are paying a decent wage. It's all good.

unhelpful and selfish said...

If you pay an improper rate a) you're likely to get a non-English speaking person. b) she/he may be more inclined to grant you personal favours. c) you'll feel a lot of guilt because... you're paying a lousy wage and cheating on your wife/husband. It's still all good.

Anonymous said...

I'd like to get rid of my (agency) cleaner as she's fairly useless, but I feel a bit sorry for her and am also beset by inertia.

Helpful said...

You say "useles" is the cleaner lazy or it something more deep seating such as learning difficulties and an inability to process instructions?

Anonymous said...

Helpful, the thing is, I DO pay a decent wage (certainly I pay the going rate and it all goes directly to my cleaner) and a) she does not speak decent English and b) I still do feel guilty! I think I'm just going to start doing it myself...

Monkeyboy said...

What's with the linguistic ability? Are you asking them to clean the sink or edit a newspaper?

My parents did both cleaning and/or caretaking type jobs. They put me through university and I'm very proud of them. I wonder if they had any idea of the utter contempt their clients felt toward them?

nice employer i hope said...

the last thing I feel towards my cleaner is contempt. I actually admire her - she is doing a course in English, has 2 children and is very strapped for cash yet always ina good mood.

I keep hassling her to take time out of my cleaning and go adn register for another course. It is a tiny way of helping someone get on on life, (something which I am always posting about!).

equally Im not in thrall to her - I do view with contempt the way that my friends bow and scrape to their cleaners and nannies. Just as I try to do a good job for my clients, there has to be a boss and a worker within the household.

Monkeyboy said...

Sorry about that last post, I was just polishing the chip on my shoulder. Get a cleaner by all means but please don't resent paying them the MINIMUM wage. Some of them may be ex bankers you know, go crazy - stretch to £6 an hour.

Anonymous said...

Why would someone (women especially) feel guilt having a cleaner? Somehow I doubt most men feel guilt when using prostitution or lap dancing services. They just see it as need being met. What is all the other baggage about? Just treat people fairly pay them properly...job done.

NEIH.. said...

haha Monkeyboy

Anon, yes exactly. it isn't very complicated. but all this meeting a friend for lunch and the nanny coming too, with child is ridiculous. She's paid to do her job with the child at home! Sorry if that's a bit duller than going to a restaurant, that's her job. Mine is pretty dull half the time too!

I dont think many people have the guilt thing in this generation. they are too busy to think twice. having a cleaner is very efficient - it enables you to produce at a higher rate than she is paid. Efficient as I say.
