The Lewisham Mayor's Business Awards 2010

The Lewisham Mayor's Business Awards 2010 are now open for entries by local companies.

The organisers have added four new categories for this year's awards, including "best pub", "best young apprentice", "best employee" and "enterprise achiever."

Brockley is lucky enough to have some great high street businesses, which we'll be able to vote for in February in the "Who do you love?" category - but there is a growing number of small businesses setting up in the area, including a number that we have profiled in recent months.

Each award is sponsored and there will be a £5,000 cash prize for the overall winner. The deadline to enter is 25 January 2010 and the winners of the Awards will be announced at a ceremony to be held on 11 March 2010 at Blackheath Halls.

For more information on each of the categories visit: www.lewisham.gov.uk/businessawards

I think Ladywell Tavern may be entering either in the best pub or best community involvement category and they may well get my vote. It's made a huge difference having a decent local pub in Ladywell. They've also been really supportive of LVIG (Ladywell Village Improvement Group) with benefit nights as well as Brockley Max.

I think next year, If Its held again there will be only one winner for best pub,The Talbot.

It's great to see that the Mayor is sponsoring this and all the Mayor's Funds out of his own pocket! What a generous knight.

If you are not being ironic that begs the question of how his pocket got to be so full...

I'm being ironic, but am I the only one that thinks that to name Council's initiatives after his office is a serious abuse of his powers and he should be made to declare these as electoral expenses?

No Max, you're not the only one!

This is said through gritted teeth but after all they're not the Sir Steve Bullock Business Awards, are they? How long do we have to wait for the next mayoral election? And is there any chance that next time there will be a single candidate standing against him? I don't think there's any doubt he'd have lost if that had been the case last time.

No they're not the Sir Steve Bullock Awards but everyone knows who the Mayor is so there's a lot of transferability of credit, those that are well aware know that it's Council's resources that are used (as for the Mayor's Fund), those that are not well informed will give him credit and vote for him. Foolproof voteglobbing and he knows it.

I don't think that there is any chance of a single candidate, most parties want to have a Mayoral candidate because it boosts their chances of getting Council seats even if they know they won't get many votes for the Mayor.

. . . and the map shown in today's Evening Standard even features brockley in the legend. Probably a bad idea as I like Brockley being relatively unknown hence quiet . . .

I think Ladywell Regional bar scene may be coming into either in the best pub or best team participation classification and they may well get my elect. It's created a significant distinction having a reasonable local pub in Ladywell. They've also been really helpful of LVIG (Ladywell Town Enhancement Group) with advantage evenings as well as Brockley Max.
