Ladywell Conservation Area Consultation
Ladywell Village Improvement Group report that Lewisham Council has launched a public consultation over whether to create a new conservation area, which would include the station, the Victorian streets nearby and possibly Ladywell high street. If commercial areas are included, it raises the question of how the Council will enforce the rules, given the disregard shown by many businesses on Brockley Road.
The survey can be found here and the Council is holding a workshop and exhibition on Saturday 9 January 2010, 12noon-3pm, at Lewisham Library.

Id like to have a new conservation area just west of brockley station - theres loads of nice victorian streets there!
Not technically a conservatiopn area point but would the new 'Tyred Out' structure at the back of the TeaFactory need planning permission, looks pretty miserable to me. Do you just check with the council online?
Oh and how do you get the council to enforce on Brockley Road? Petition?
Think they have let down Deptford High Street more than anywhere else. It is even on an at risk register somewhere, possibly with English Heritage.
Surprised the Mayor would allow any conservation areas, he isn't in favour of our heritage from what I've seen happen in Lewisham and Ladywell over the last few years.
At least the name is more auspicious than a village I've just seen on a map of Gloucestershire - Slutswell!!
Anywhere that is even half nice to live in, in Lewisham should put in for Conservation area status, just for some added protection, against the rabid development plans that this borough is being subjected to.
You'll probably find the council have already given planning permission to demolish what you might expect to fall into a conservation area. Victorian housing and schools not being what they have on their "modern living, education" agenda. What does the mayor think of conservation areas...I imagine, "faceless bureaucrats caring about the our heritage".

Well, if this means that the couple of flats above the shops in Ladywell get a new lick of paint and some window panes I would be all for it.
Walked down the road the other day and I think the biggest eye sore is the fragmented look of all the shops and their displays. In my opinion both Geddes and Oscars have done a great job.
Being a conservation area will there be tighter control on the shop fronts? Display?
There should be tighter controls on shopfronts. I assume owners are given information on what they can and can't do. But then there is no enforcement and shop owners do what they want, as in Deptford High Street, hence loss of Kennedy's beautiful shop front and marble counter interior. There are other shops which have been wrecked, but non that was quite so fine.
