New Year's Eve in Brockley

If, for some reason, you don't fancy fighting your way in to central London, to stand, frozen, by the banks of the Thames, watching the same (admittedly impressive) fireworks display they've staged for the last decade, then check out the local options.

The Rivoli Ballroom

Brockley's most stunning venue hosts its New Year's Eve party. Call 0208 692 5130 to book tickets. Tickets £25 in advance, £30 on door.

Jam Circus

JC will be throwing a freaks & fairytales costume party (costume not compulsory, but strongly encouraged), with the infamous DJ Saffrolla spinning records way into 2010. The team also promise some exciting bonus pre-DJ entertainment. Tickets are £10 in advance, including a glass of sparkly white stuff on arrival. Call 020 8692 3320 to book tickets.

The Talbot

If you fancy dinner on New Year's Eve, the Talbot is offering a "three course sit down meal with a complimentary glass of champagne and cheese for £40." (Presumably the cheese doesn't come in the same glass).

The menu will be prepared by Manu Lallier, the head chef of the Prince Regent, who is now the executive head chef overseeing both establishments.

Anyone wishing to book a table can call 0208 692 2665.

The Talbot will also be letting everybody in free for a drink before 10pm if they wish, after that they will be charging a fiver.

Nice one Talbot. Anyone know what's happening at other venues in the locale; the Ladywell Tavern, The Orchard or the Brockley Mess or the Brockley Barge?

The Orchard are throwing a party but it's ticketed and they've already sold out.

Anonymous: that's in line with loads of other pubs. What's wrong with a start up business trying to make some extra cash on new years eve?

Anon - I've found most pubs shut to regular punters at about 5 on NYE unless you are willing to pay extra to come in from about 7pm - will be nice to have someone to go for a drink before ten, without having to pay extra.

Anon - the number is a direct cut and paste from the one on their website, which says you can book in advance, but doesn't mention ticket prices... ;)

The Rivoli isn't the easiest place to provide news and information about, it must be said.

And what fun It will be trying to get £5 off everyone who wants to stay In The Talbot.

The Orchard sold out quickly. I would have liked to have gone as it's the closest place to me.

Beerforall, they won't be charging punters already in the pub a fiver - just ones entering after 10pm.

The Wickham is notionally free but they usually put a surcharge on the cost of the drinks.

That and the awful Karaoke/Disco makes is it less of bargain than it might seem at first.

The punters seem to like it though because you only see them in there on New Year's Eve. I don't know where they regularly drink but last year I could count the normal regualrs on the fingers of one hand.

Or - if it is not too cold and wet - go up to one of the high spots, Hilly Fields or the Telegraph Hill Upper Park - and look at everyone's fireworks, no need to go up to the Thames.

Re Rivoli - in the past I went down in the afternoon on NYE and the tickets were on sale inside.
Re Ladywell Tavern - they said they aren't doing anything special, just music from the ipod.

Was in Jam Circus the other evening enjoying glass of wine. It's a great boozer but can't help noticing that patterned wallpaper surely it is time for a bit of a makeover ? Brighten the place up a bit, neutral colours etc.... just don't get Justin and co. in for the job this time!!

neutral colours? really?

Anonymous said...

Hint of a tint? No thank you!

That wall paper is Laura Ashley and was bang on trend only 2-3 years ago!

Anyway - I think it gives the place an intimate, cosy feel.

if you want neutral, go to the talbot

I wish the Talbot would decide what it is. Is it a pub, or a restaurant? It's ok for drinks but for food this place is so frustrating! You cannot order at the bar, only at the table. But when it comes to wanting dessert/wanting a bill, you have to unnecessarily go to the bar to ask the staff to come over to your table. Either don't bother with half-hearted table service or do it properly. Might mean I eventually leave someone a tip...
