Living in Brockley: More leafy than coastal

"Ooh, three points. Both fine answers, but we were looking for leafy, leafy."
- Phoebe, Friends

This is such a shamless bit of PR fluff that we feel dirty even for using it, but Spareroom.co.uk has asked all of its Brockley advertisers to tell them what living in Brockley is like using one of a list of 51 words. The most popular answer was leafy. They say:

We offered 51 possible words and phrases to describe Brockley, and the top choices (in order) were as follows:

Leafy
Chilled
Well-connected
Up and coming
Safe
Friendly
Multicultural
Unpretentious
Undiscovered
Quiet

Bear in mind that there were no bad words to choose from on the original list and that options like 'rustic' and 'coastal' were unlikely ever to figure highly, but it's not a bad ten word description. What would your eleventh word be?

With thanks to Moira for spotting it.

Sorry you felt dirty :)

Not an attempt at PR, we're looking at ways to help people new to London work out which areas they live in and thought asking people who already live there to describe them might help. Most of the results so far seem pretty accurate. I live in Forest Hill so know Brockley really well and I think this selection does it justice.

Cheers
Matt

Interesting that 'arty' has been consigned to another era.

"Unpretentious!" - someone's having a laugh!

@Matt - it is shameless PR fluff, but it worked, so I'm not knocking it!

This area isn't pretentious. We like nice stuff, clean roads, attractive shops, etc but not the attendant attitudes that you'd experience in other areas; such as with people overtly judging you by your clothes or labels.
If I have an Audi, its because its a long lasting value for money vehicle not because I want to show off to the neighbours. It's subtle difference.

The area may be unpretentious but you can't say the same for some of the residents.........one or two of whom post on here from time to time.

Tatty....in a lived in sort of way.

Steptoe's scrap yard style.

You could hardly describe Brockley as pretentious! I sometimes find it hard to believe that people who comment here have even seen other areas of London if they think Brockley is pretentious! Take a trip to anywhere in west London and increasingly, SW London. Brockley isn't even an amateur in the pretentious stakes, it's got a loooong way to go...

Headhunter is spot on... Brockley is great for its own reasons but its even more great for not being nappy valley... er... yet!

Couldn't agree more, HH! Least pretentious part of London I have ever lived in.

I think 'leafy' sums it up perfectly.... and this recent Telegraph article really rings the praises of our wee corner of London...
