South East London tradespeople recommendations
Builders, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, roofers, and so on - which tradesmen entrance you? Use this thread to recommend local suppliers to other Brockley readers. Brockley Central does not endorse any of the providers mentioned on this thread.
Please don't use this thread to discuss locals shops, cafes, etc. There are countless other places on Brockley Central where you can do that.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 400 of 969 Newer› Newest»After many, many false starts I found a terrific company to prune my hedges - and they do all sorts of other gardening, too. Amazing job, and perfect clean-up, and very good about coming round to do proper reccy beforehand, etc. Called Eden Gardens, based in SE18 - Rupert is the guy to speak to on 07860 739 714. Highly recommended!
Can anyone recommend someone who will clean gutters and wash windows? I'm finding it hard to find a company that will do a residential property job! Many thanks.
I had trouble with finding gutter cleaner too - eventually found Nigel at Gutter Cleaning UK. He did a great job and cleaned up the ground below where dirt etc fell down too. His number is 0750 328 3051. As for window cleaners, there are recommendations higher up on this thread.
Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced carpenter to repair/ restore/ rebuild our Victorian staircase. The bannisters, spindles and the ornate ends of the steps have all be damaged or removed when the staircase was boxed up presumably in the 70s.
I'd put in a big recommendation for a couple of Polish brothers in law for kitchen, bathroom fitting and general painting and decorating (I think they also do more substantial jobs as well). They recently refitted our main bathroom, put in a new ensuite and put the finishing touches to our kitchen. I can't fault the quality of their work: they're honest, reliable and hard working. There quotes were also consistently the cheapest we got. They're based in Acton but seem willing to travel. Call Slav on 07762596773.
Can anyone recommend a fridge repair person that doesn't charge the earth?
Thanks so much!
Yusein does a great job at reasonable price if you need painting, plastering or general handyman help.
Also Iliya is a wizard if you have a problem with your PC/MAC.
Call/text me on 07786933815 if you need more info.
For anyone looking to smarten up their home front we've just had work done by a guy called James (email: James@myhomefront.net) He laid a victorian tiled path, built a bike shed and generally tidied and sorted out the rest, excellent work, good price and such a nice guy - highly recommended. His mobile is 07720 401512.
We also had painting done by Tim Flynn following a recommendation on here and would endorse that, he was also great.
Can anyone recommend a local gardener? I'm looking to clear the front garden and install a new hedge. Thanks
It might be best to ask your prospective gardener to plant a hedge, rather than install it...
Marc, see my gardener recommendation a few posts above.
We just used Dom Kluth from DK decorating to paint our communal hallway after seeing recommendations on here and he did a fantastic job. He was reasonably priced, very quick, cleaned up behind and it looks great. So would definitely add our recommendation to the list.
Thanks Ewhursty, will give him a call !
Can anyone recommend a builder/handy person?
Need new attic doors made and fitted + kitchen floor laid + odds and irritating jobs.
Would ask local builder in Trywhitt Rd who did a door drop recently but can't find any recommendations.
Would refer local bods if poss. Any ideas?
Many thanks Trudi
An incredibly useful thread. Can anyone recommend a door supply and fit company? I'm looking to replace four nackered internal doors. I've seen very mixed reviews about Dawes for Doors in Forest Hill. Any experiences to relate re them?
Trudi, we also used Dom (mentioned above) based on other recommendations, I think it's actually DRK decorating, he has a website. He laid some hardwood flooring, hung new doors to fit and done some tiling. He also cleaned the gutters out, so does handyman type work. We're very happy with all the work he done and as far as I'm aware he's based in Brockley.
If anyone is looking for a local electrician in Brockley I couldn't recommend Tim Guthrie highly enough (www.timguthrie.net). He has recently rewired my electrics and installed lighting throughout my kitchen.
Tim is hands down the best tradesman I have ever dealt with: he is neat, thorough, punctual, trustworthy, and offers creative solutions to problems.
If anyone is looking for curtains and blinds, I've just had an absolute dream job done by Rose of Classic Curtains. She comes out and shows sample fabrics at your home, then measures up herself. Then she comes back with her trusty handyman sidekick for installation. She did amazing quality job - turns out she works for interior designers and stately homes! - at very reasonable rates. South East London is her home patch. Website does not do her service justice in my opinion! It's classiccurtains.co.uk or phone Rose on 020 8312 0456. She's a lovely person, who did a wonderfully thoughtful job - can't praise her enough.
Electrician: Tim Guthrie, tel. 07788 756274 http://www.timguthrie.net
Tim is a NICEIC registered Domestic Installer who lives locally. He installed a new fuse box for us a couple of years ago & within the last couple of weeks has installed some new light fittings, a telephone extension point and a bathroom extractor fan. I'd highly recommend him. He is competitively priced and has completed all our jobs to an excellent standard.
Can anyone recommend a cleaner?
Hello, Could anyone recommend a local Architect for a small extension?
thanks
We have moved to Brockley very recently and are finding this resource (as well as Brockley Central in general) invaluable, great work Nick. None of the plasterers already recommended could do the work we needed (urgent skimming of two reception rooms) quickly enough, so we used Beau of BS Plastering from Forest Hill (07872638176 or www.bs-plastering.co.uk). He did a brilliant job at a brilliant price.
Recently moved to Brockley and looking for a window cleaner, any suggestions?
I've just tracked down Mersh Bros, late of this parish. They're in Bellingham next to the station. Very nice people and quick service, they turned around the speedster in under an hour, not bad, and I spent a pleasant half an hour in the Park View Cafe nearby, which at 9am was packed with a different kind of yummy mummy, not a bugaboo in sight.
Help. Having problems with the central heating can anyone recommend a central heating engineer other than Abacus (too busy) or Martin Kelson (not answering). Thanks.
SuzyQ - I suggest Jens Cole, who lives locally and has worked on a number of properties in the area (including mine and a number of my friends). He doesn't have a website but you can reach him at jens.cole[at]virgin.net or 07970 021251.
Can anyone recommend a good window glazer please?
The glazier in Nunhead seems OK, not sure if he leaves the shop but if he doesn't I'm sure he'll someone who does.
Great, thanks.
I can now recommend Peter Bennison for boiler/heating problems.
http://www.pmbennison.co.uk/
Abacus were very helpful but couldn't get anyone to me for over a week.
Any suggestions for how i can make my victorian fireplace safe so that my cats don't climb up the chimney?
My temporary and really unsightly fix is a taped piece of cardboard!
By occasionally lighting a fire under it. That'll learn 'em.
Would you be able to get a fireguard - one of those ones that fits closely against the opening, effectively as a cage?
Otherwise is it not possible to bundle up some bubble wrap, cardboard or something and wedge it up the chimney out of sight.
How persistent are your cats?
Put a dog in the chimney.
We got a fireguard from Crystal Palace Antique.

Hi - can anyone recommend a good gas engineer who can come out at short notice to repair a gas leak? Have had British Gas round this afternoon who have done their bit, & shut off the gas now saying we need to get a Gas Safe Registered Gas engineer to sort out the leak. Have tried several numbers but can't get anyone.
Any advice welcome - thanks!
Clif- plumber/gas fitter, fair prices, very very thorough. 07881628045
Or try national gas safe register.
http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/
We've just had a new boiler fitted by Pro Gas Heating Services in Sydenham, who are gas safe registered and have always been reliable:
Tel 020 8676 0101
@Tamsin - thanks for the advice - will give it a go next weekend
@Anonymous - obviously not a cat lover!
A chimney balloon ought to do it (unless they can pop it).
Hi,i used Cliff,a plumbing and gas engineer and an all round professional builder today.Reasonably priced, thorough in his work and explained what he was doing as he went along.Would thoroughly recommend as he has a friendly way and easy going.Cliff 07881628045.
Hi SuzyQ,
I would recommend Chrysanthie Perpatidou she does not have a website either but her contact number is mobile number is 07860459826. She had some amazing ideas for our conversion of a 3 storey town house in Brockley. If you're still looking for someone.
@ SuzyQ,
I just noticed I mispelt her name Chryssanthi Perpatidou - you should be able to find her on the Architects Board now.
Gas fitters/Plumbers
The guys from Smart Team Services installed my new boiler last year. They were friendly, tidy, really competitively priced and they're based in Brockley.
http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/directory/1850/113708.php
Roofers: McCann Roofing have just done a great job on some roof repairs that I needed on my place in Crofton Park. I'd definitely use them again. http://www.mccannroofing.com/
Just had Terry's All Locks over to fix my Yale lock and I have to say they are fantastic. Come on time, very pleasant and fast. Last year when I moved into my flat and needed the locks changed, the guy who came recommended just changing the tumbler rather than the whole lock, which saved me about £40!
Have finally finshed the renovation (I hope!!) and this is what I've learned in terms of good local people:
Gas, Boilers and central heating:
Neil Cornes of NCC SouthEast - http://www.ncc-southeast.co.uk/ - did some underfloor heating, put in an entirely new heating sytem (piping, the works). Is a bit "bombastic" but was reliable, did what he said he'd do and when he said. Not the cheapest out there but definitely recommended.
Builders - the Rooney Brothers http://www.mjrooneyconstruction.co.uk/ (some Irish guys who've taken over their Dad's business). Local, reliable, competitive pricing etc. They do the works from small one room conversions right up to massive projects. Can't recommend them highly enough.
Electricans - Tony. Lives in Brockley/TH. Phone 07850 329 035He completely re-wired out house and did it cheaply and, better still, properly. He's a bit of an acquired taste in terms of working methods (and will chat and chat and chat) but he was honest and reliable. He's also been willing to come out and fix things (where I've buggered them up) on a Saturday evening and late on a Friday night and not charge an arm and a leg for it!
Decorators - ANC Decortaors http://www.ancdecorators.co.uk/ (the Cornish brothers). Local and did a great job on the external painting work etc. have also done some of the internal decorations for our neighbours and they have ben very happy with them as well. And, they charged a fair price.
Roofing - Jim the Roofer. Has done our roof and lots of friend's now as well. Was brilliant (even down to cutting the slate so that we could match the original club formation patterns over the bay windows). Reliable, honest (a friend was looking at getting a whole roof replaced and he said he could fix it for about a tenth the price of redoing it and 2 years later it's stayed fixed) and very fair prices. Can't recommend highly enough.
Anda contact number for Jim the roofer - 07779 710 685
Does anyone have a cleaner who they could recommend? Ideally someone who could also do ironing?
neon lighting
web design company
David - thanks very much for posting all that, I think I may have a job for a couple of those people!
Thanks to everyone who has posted here - really valuable information.
PS I'd echo the request for recommendations for a cleaner. Cheers
Window Cleaning - i noticed that summer was darker than i remembered as a child. Turns out my windows were filthy. Started using BCS Window Cleaning, £5 for the front of my 3bed terrace (2 windows upstairs and a bay window on the ground floor)
Windows are clean and they post a recipt with bank details so you can pay on line if you like. Seems to be OK so far.
(020 8697 5393 or 07958 431434)
I live in the conservation area and need to get a TV aeriel installed on the roof of a 3 storey building - any recommendations for installers? Many thanks.
We need someone to do some hard landscaping in our back garden, lay a new patio and turf, stick a fence up etc.
We've had outrageous quotes that seem to be mistaking our 40ft Ladywell back yard with Kew Gardens.
Anyone got any recommendations?
Thanks
Oh and here's my recommendations:
Abacus for central heating/ gas stuff http://www.abacusgas.com/
Stuart Boswell for kitchens and bathrooms 07956300898
Don the Drain for drains (obviously) 07973370956
Hopfields for all things car-related. THey also do warranty work. 0751550304. They are based in Bermondsey but are honest about pricing and reliable. THe boss guy PK is v helpful
Murat the electrician 07762882382
For anyone looking for general handyman just had a great experience with Roger from Silver Saints. He lives in Catford so is local, and did a brilliant job fitting a blind and other little jobs. Silversaints.com or 0207 0999 199.
Can anyone recommend a good removal company please?
Urgently looking for a carpenter/joiner person/company to build and install a staircase going into the loft any recomendations?
Hi - does anyone have the name of a chimney sweep, and also someone who could put a chubb lock in an external door?
Thanks.
does anyone know a good chimney sweep and someone who could fit a Chubb external lock?
Thanks
Becsparkel - we moved in march last year with Monarch http://www.monarch-movers.com/. We were very happy with them. We used their packing and moving service. There were v few breakages and no disputes about compensation for the few mishaps even though we discovered them several weeks after moving.
Anonymous - we use Apex Chimney Services. I don't know the measure of a good sweep but we regularly have fires and all seems to be working fine. They made some recommendations on how we could make our fires more heat efficient but were not at all pushy about trying to get us to pay for extra services. They gave us a safety certificate thingy too (think you need for insurance purposes - not sure)
We used James Removals in Blackheath www.jamesremovals.com and thought they were brilliant.
Can anyone recommend someone for ariel installation?
Thanks
Just used Gabriel Speedy Repairs for dishwasher repair, Tel 020 8692 7959. Thanks Tressilliana for recommending him on here. Very good service and very reasonable price.
Suzyrocker
I'm using McGovern Carpentry to completely refurb my house and build an extension.
http://www.mcgoverncarpentry.com/
I found them recommended on the East Dulwich forum and they are brilliant.
Eddie of abacus gas who I've recommended before has been keeping my piece of crap boiler ticking over. Finally swallowed the expense and got a spanking new one fitted, I'm bored of being soaped up just when in trips out.
Got a similar quote from p m benison, went with abacus as I know them. Got a very comprehensive quote from both which is essential if both parties are to avoid any arguments. abacus price included power flushing which he does before each instalation, the other quote was "if required" and would have been extra. Flushing is good practice so that swung it for me.
A brilliant job, very tidy instalation. All the paperwork and guarantees scrupulously filled in. He popped round later to explain how to programme it and because im an engineer insisted on showing me the insides of the boiler - did you know that a motor driven diverter valve is much better than a diaphragm actuated one? No? Me neither.
Top job, top bloke and because he's registered with valiant you get a five year parts & labour warranty. Said that he'd got business through here so shows that the site is a positive for decent local businesses
Www.abacusgas.com
Can I echo the request for recommendations for installation of a TV ariel on my roof (3 storey house). Thanks.
Am looking at buying in Brockley and this site has been brilliant help, thanks.
On the removals front if you just need a reliable man and van try www.citymanandvan.co.uk. They're technically based in Kilburn but they've moved me from Catford to Greenwich so clearly london-wide. Reliable, fast, helpful, at the lower end of the price spectrum. (The website suggests it's a big company but I've been moved by the same guy, Mo, both times who owns the company)
RE: chimney sweep request. We used Mr Jolly a year or so ago.
http://www.mrjollychimneysweep.com/
Probably time to give him another call, in fact.
Can anyone recommend a good decorator to hang liner paper.
Thanks
Has anyone used Brockley Joinery before? We need a new back door built with double glazing and they seem good but was wondering if anyone had anybody they would recommend.
I can wholeheartedly recommend Active Boilers for all plumbing jobs.
They have done numerous jobs for me including installing a new boiler and new radiators, installing a new bathroom and plumbing in a washing machine and a dishwasher. All work was done to a very high standard and everything was left clean and tidy afterwards.
Call Swav on 07738 569504 or 0208 8575797.
http://www.activeboilers.co.uk
Chimney Sweep = Steve Pearce 0208 699 3713 /8857 6511 his family been sweeping locally for years
Builders - Roy Town 07860253635- recommended earlier on this thread, did some plastering, carpentry /plumbing for us recently, very reliable, profesisonal, tidy with a good team of blokes
Carpet cleaning Wayne of Fabric and Fibre 07872397129 who does a brilliant job always
Cleaning - Paulina on 07910748215 cleans our place of work and has done stints for me and lots of people locally. She's great but her English isn't brilliant ( she's Peruvian)so am quite happy for people to contact me on 07931550999and I'll liaise
Looking for someone to advise on reconditioning/replacing sash windows.
Also (possibly) someone to do a small building job: thinking of putting a recess for a TV into a chimney breast.
TIA.
Does anyone know of a good local seamstress or sample machinist? I need a set of clothes making up...
Ben,
Greenwich Joinery did a great job for me (posted earlier) they do sash widows as well, not cheap though.
http://yfrog.com/b9x3glj
http://yfrog.com/n458kj
(01322 225 700, 07507360658 ask for Tommy)
Thanks MB. I fear "sash windows" and "cheap" rarely appear in a sentence that doesn't also include "not".
I had a cat flap fitted by Colin Darrall of cat flap fitter.
I found him to be polite and very good at his work.
He clearly enjoys his work and all creatures great and small
Jenny SE London
Another vote for Eddie of Abacus Gas for boiler repair work. He also came back at a later date to re-fit valves on my radiators to prevent leaks and did a quick, smart job there too.
I've recently used Dominic of DRK to do some paintwork and he did an excellent job. As others have mentioned he left my place spotless too(http://www.drkdecorating.co.uk/)
Can anyone recommend a good fridge/freezer repair man/lady?
I've been calling on Michael of Kitchen Appliance Repairs - 07831 538 431 for years to keep my dishwasher and washing machine going to a ripe old age (for dishwashers and washing machines) and his father before him.
No reservations about recommending him and I suspect that he might do fridges as well - he fixed my electric cooker on one occasion. (Does not do gas.)
I would recommend Gabriel Speedy Repairs - 020 8692 7959. Brilliant service over many, many years. Also a business passed from father to son! He does dishwashers and washing machines, and if he doesn't do fridges and freezers he probably knows someone who does.
That's great, thank you both.
Any decent local picture framers?
Great resource for the trades.
Just like to add a second recommendation for Don the Drain. Prompt, friendly, helpful, fixed price. Main problem sorted very quickly. Helpful advice on less pressing (but annoying) general plumbing issue.
Given previous experience of a cowboy outfit I used before, an absolute joy. Clearly I hope I never see him again but it's great to know who to call when things do go wrong.
Picture framers - there is (or used to be) one on Lewisham Way which had quite a wide range of frames and was not particularly expensive. We used them a few times and were happy with the results.
David Mitchell is the local picture framer but on Loampit Hill rather than Lewisham Way.
I used him many many years ago but not recently. Friends of mine however speak highly of him.
I would like to recommend local landscape gardeners JMC Landscapes: www.jmclandscapes.com
They just did a great job on my friend's front garden in Clapham and have recently moved to Brockley.
The website is really impressive and they have a facebook page so if you're thinking of getting your garden done then you should definitely take a look!
After using two other plumbers who didn't really do the job, I can also highly recommend Swav from ACTIVE BOILERS. He was prompt, polite, and did a great job with minimal fuss. Would use him again in a flash. Many thanks for the original post!
Has anyone ever had any asbestos testing or removal done? I want to make our loft hatch bigger but the ceiling is covered in artex and we've been advised that it may contain asbestos so I want to check before we disturb it.
On the subject of sash windows, we used The Sash Window Man to refurb ours and were very pleased with their work.
Plumber!! After 4 years living here have finally got a good one, he is professional and quite entertaining, called me Madam even though he is obviously and middle aged hippy, Jim Mullarkey of Catford perfect.
http://www.businesspad.org/uk1_business85427_J-O-Mullarkey-The-Old-Stables-Braidwood-Rd-Catford-London-SE6-1QU/
One more thing, after being told by 2 plumbers recommended by SIDS that we needed a new boiler "£2K thanks very" much Jim came, and said that it would just need fixing, the whole job would cost a fraction and it did. He could have made more £ putting in a new one but was honest and v practical.
We had a whole load of rubbish to clear from our house after a renovation (doors, sacks of rubble, bits of wood, etc... even a kitchen sink!) and we found Ray of R H Services recommended on here.
He was absolutely brilliant, lovely guy, no fuss, polite and did the job quickly and efficiently.
We filled his lorry for £250 - hassle free.
I said I'd recommend him and have finally got round to it!
My car has been hit by a long lorry, I need to get some quotes for body work repairs.
Any recommendations?
Thanks.
I'm after someone for a bit of garden clearance, soil moving, spade weilding sort of thing t gte this long overdue garden makeover underway. Any suggestions? Thanks
Jim from acme landscaping has just finished my garden and delighted with the results - complete clearance, decking, path and lawn put down. Very reasonable compared to other quotes received. Would definitely recommend. acmelandscaping.co.uk
Thanks Sarah, he's coming for a look next weekend. Do you mind me asking about prices. I've really got no idea what to expect for diff jobs! Can use mbowery@hotmail.com if you prefer. Thanks again.
For all things garden, I can highly recommend Propagating Dan. He is local, lovely, very well behaved and has done a great job in our garden (levelling, decking, fencing, planting etc). He will also do maintenance work on your garden afterwards, if you need it. He is extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic and takes any ideas you might have and works with them. Possibly not the cheapest but very thorough and precise.
www.propagatingdan.com
jmclandscapes.com do design as well as maintenance and have just moved to Brockley if you'd like to take a look at their site:
www.jmclandscapes.com
or fb page:
www.facebook.com/jmclandscapesuk
You can find their details on either of the above links and their work is of an extremely high quality.
Just had Phillip Davies from www.anyrubbish.co.uk come and cart away a skip's worth of garden and household tat for much less than skip hire and the necessary license. Polite and clean, I'd recommend. Based in Hither Green.
I am hoping to do VSO for 2 years and will need to rent my house out. Can anyone recommend a local estate agent who will make sure that my house is ok? Does anyone have experience of this? All pointers welcome, though not too many horror stories please!
Get landlords insurance as opposed to normal insurance. It will include 3rd party liability, so you're covered if a drunk australian tennant electocutes himself while drying his socks in your toaster.
Just wondering if anyone has experience of a good local pest control firm. Despite all my best endeavours I cannot eliminate a mouse - or two.
Agent Orange Pest Control were brilliant. They came and blocked every possible gap for mice to get in. Think it was just under £300 for the whole house with a guarantee of a year that we wouldn't get an invasion. That was about two years ago, not so much as a scurry since.
Definitely recommend Colin from K&O Pest Control. Has loads of recommendations on East Dulwich Forum. I think he charged £70 for 2 visits and is fab.
Colin K & O pest control 07940 751 255 / 0208 658 5585
Can anyone recommend a good soundproofing company around the Brockley area? Just to help block out general noise from our neighbours. Thanks!
VSo person.
I rented for 6 years and can highly recommend KFH from a tenant's perspective - efficient and responsive. Never use Acorn. We had a two year catalogue of complaints which ended up in us writing to the CEO (whose name was extremely difficult to find on Google) and nothing improved. They exasperated the landlords too who could never get a straight answer from them.
Does anyone have any experience of CJs Property Maintenance and repairs? He seems like a very nice person who knows what he is talking about, but it would be good if someone could recommend him.
Door fitter?? Currently have one job underway with Dawes for Doors (will post later on end result) but need to find someone who will fit, hang and furnish new external door at another property. Is this a carpenter's, builder's or locksmith's area of expertise?? Thanks
re: mice/pest control
Lewisham Council provide a pest control service (go to the council website and search for pests) it costs £85 for up to 3 visits for mice.
If you look for a good and local architect, I can recommend Sigrun Sverrisdóttir. She gave us very precious suggestions for our ensuite! She does lots of work locally (extensions, conversions...) and she knows everything about Lewisham Council building notice and requirements. She is based in New Cross Gate / Telegraph Hill.

Any recommendations for a vinyl flooring fitter?
Hi, do you have any recommendation for a bee nest removal person? The one recommended on the Lewisham website asks for £50 - and I would like to find a cheaper one. Any ideas?
Thanks,
A loose swarm of bees or a wasp nest?
There's a Bee Swarm helpline for London 07922 147379. They might also be able to advise or deal with an established nest - but that does seem like it might be a bit more complicated.
The London Beekeepers Assocation have a website for more information generally.
A small plastic can from the Esso garage, about £3 of unleaded (or Diesel) and a cheap lighter. You could get the job done yourself for under a fiver.
PS Do let us know the outcome... Is it likely to be the same swarm that was seen on Darling Road on Sunday?
Hi Tamsin, thanks for the top, I called the helpline and they said that since it is a bumble bee nest, they can't remove them, as they die if they do. So he advised me to leave them in peace. Thanks for your help.
Sonia
I meant, thanks for the tip, of course.
Geoff - aka "Shelf Doctor" - great carpenter who has sorted out my doors (patching and re-hanging) and put on some new skirting in the bathroom and dining room. His number is: 07828150366
Thanks for the update, Sonia. I hope they are not too inconvenient and don't have to be destroyed. Always had something of a fondness for bumble-bees - it's the fuzzy cuteness that does it.
Sorry Nick! I shall rephrase: I had a very negative experience with Dawes for Doors and wouldn't use them again - I hope your experience is more positive.
Anonymous with the mice - I would avoid Rentokil. We've used them recently for cockraoches. They were quick to take almost £300 off us but I've had to chase them repeatedly to arrange appointments that they don't keep. 4 months later we are cockroach free but still haven't had all the visits we paid for.
Best thing we found for mice was a staple gun, some steel wool and fine grade wire mesh from the hardware shop. Doesn't make for a fun weekend but plugging all the holes is the only way.
I have used Cliff, a GAS SAFE Engineer and plumber. He is multi talented as he is a qualified builder also. He has a fantastic portfolio of work he has completed and he was recommended to me. He is always polite and explains everything to ensure you understand what he is doing. His prices are reasonable and his work is absolute quality. His number is 07867 752032. Call him now as he gets booked up weeks in advance.
Can anyone recommend a builder to repair or re-do concrete steps? The steps are the typical entry type found in Brockley, struggled to find anyone, may be a job for a good generalist?
I've used Cliff as well and I can highly recommend him!
A quick post regarding the relatively newly relocated Mersh Brothers MOT testing place. Went yesterday for first time since they moved from Lewisham and was really impressed as always. They are really accommodating and flag up any likely future problems. Easier to get to than I thought too: Bellingham Trading Estate is just after the bus garage on the Bromley Road.

I'm hopefully getting Paula Manning over to do a small wallpapering job, off the back of the recommendation on here. FYI her website is www.manninginteriors.com. Can't tie down Rosie Riley for love nor money. Used a fab carpenter called Totyu Karabelov, not local as such but he travels and he's always early/on time, possible the tidiest and hardest working tradesman i've employed - http://www.totscarpentry.co.uk/
We are hoping to do a loft conversion, any recommended companies? Do I need an architect too? Thanks!
You could try Richard from RM Building. Based in Honor Oak, he takes on anything from smaller jobs to extensions, loft conversions or renovations.
His number is 07920 776 809. You can also find him on the Checkatrade website if you want to see other recommendations.
Hullo. Can anyone recommend someone to do some plasterwork restoration? Cornices / roses which need cleaning and damaged sections replicating. Thanks!
Also, someone to do flue-lining and fireplace installation?
This has been a very significant blog indeed. I’ve acquired a lot of helpful information from your article. Thank you for sharing such relevant topic with us. I really love all the great stuff you provide. Thanks again and keep it coming
Thank you for sharing such relevant topic with us. I really love all the great stuff you provide. Thanks again and keep it coming
Ok, you can chill now. We get it.
Can anyone recommend a local electrician. I need two lights to be put up in my living room (attached to ceiling rose)
thanks.
Re: electrician - I used Murat (recommended earlier in this thread - you may have to page up a few times for his details which I don't have to hand). He was really good.
Murat's fantastic, heartily recommended. 07762 882 382.
Has anyone used Clearpoint for re-pointing? Or any other company they can recommend?
We've used Cleanpoint for paint removal and re-pointing. They were very good indeed and fairly priced too.
Can anyone recommend a cleaner?
Some cleaners advertise in the classifieds section.
Has anyone had a video intercom system installed? Are they worth it?
If so who did you use? Thanks in advance for any help/info.
http://www.easyservices24hr.co.uk/glazing/cat-flaps-fitted-into-glass.html
if anyone needs a cat flap fitted into glass even if its single or double glazing i would use this company they have a great service Cat Flap Fitted Into Glass
Easy Services (see above) have an 'innovative' approach to taking payments from bank cards that may not be to all tastes.
I recently had Zak Shaw from Shaw Tree Care come and do some lopping and clearing. Resonable priced, very nice guy. Free Estimates and advice. Office: 020 8485 9378 Mob: 07880 686395
We are planning to add a timber-framed, single-storey extension to the back of a Victorian terrace house. Can anyone recommend a builder who has worked on a similar project? Thanks
roofer
If anyone needs curtains made I can recommend Rose at Classic Curtains. She is lovely - very helpful and did a great job. She'll come round evenings or weekends, can bring lots of samples, measures up and fits everything. She made it very easy. Her details are www.classiccurtainsuk.co.uk, tel 0208 312 0456.
Also - we used Marcus (MW Plastering) for tiling and plastering jobs. He's lovely and we are very happy with his work. His number is 07817 050 159.
I have used Tiger domestic Heating engineer before. He is based in Brockley. He is reliable and hard-working. He will come around to discuss price and service before starting. I was very happy with his work.
He changed my boiler and has also been servicing it for the last few years.
Give hime a try. number is 07904657765
He can also do some handywork around the house and decorating. He has done a friends wooden floor...all the sanding and varnishing and he did a great job!!!!
irina
Just had http://www.drkdecorating.co.uk/ finish some work for me. Couple of interior doors glossed, two small panes of glass replaced, shabby bathroom window repaired and painted and exterior masonry paint job including repairing a missing section of moulding.
Did an excellent job, took three days but would have done it in two if it had not rained and a really keen price, so much so that I wish I'd discovered him ages ago and saved myself the bother of doing the rest of the house myself.
He's looking for help but is keen to get the right people to protect his reputation apparently, I suspect he'll be more than a one man band before too long. Highly recommended.
Conservatory repairs anyone?
Ours has vents that are supposed to be operated by a switch in the wall. They don't respond anymore, unfort. I think it is mechanical, rather than electrical, though.
Does anyone have any suggestions? many thanks
I would like to recommend Ahmed from tiger domestic heating. He is corgi registered, works very hard and is friendly. he came out to give me a quote on a bathroom refurbishment without a call out charge and managed to get it done very quick. I was amazed with the result and think you should give this local gas engineer and plumber a try.!!!!! His number is 07904657765
Any reccs for fencing? We have a fence approx 100m which needs replacing.
oops I meant 100 ft. no matter ...
Re fencing try the timber merchant in catford.
They suggested a couple of people Inc someone called Jon? Can't remember but defo worth going through them as they gave a good discount and did a great job.
Trudi
Just had a new fence put up, really happy with results, great job, really helpful guy and very reasonably priced, contact Colin on 07535 711360, happy for you to come and look at my fence if that would help, Colin could arrange.
We're about to start a loft conversion in our property and have seen several companies that are doing similar jobs in the Brockley area. Have you used any of them and would you recommend them? Or maybe you have any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance
I`m planning to get the outside of our house painted and would like a recommendation for a good painter/decorator?
Many thanks in advance.
another thumbs up for Zak Shaw from Shaw Tree Care. Did a great job felling an ugly, half dead cherry tree. Office: 020 8485 9378 Mob: 07880 686395
Thanks to a recommendation on this site we got in touch with Propagating Dan (a local gardener based in Nunhead) who redesigned our 35-40 foot garden. He somehow managed to include all the features we wanted in the design and allowed lots of time to discuss materials. plants, costs etc. He is very amiable and professional and i'd recommend him highly.
I would to add to the chorus of approval for Jamie at Complete Property - professional, reasonably priced and willing to repair the shockingly poor workmanship of others. Kitchen and bathroom done in a two bed flat.
I have 11 old paving stones and a few pieces of wood that i need taking away. Can anyone recommend a licensed rubbish clearance company?
RE Clearing garden rubble etc why not try freecycle, it is free, youcan pass all sorts of things on to people, old sofas mattresses, baby stuff the lots, even stuff you think no one will want.
Trudi
@Trudi: I've been trying to get rid of a television table on Freecycle and no one wants it :-(
Re gardening: I've just had my garden redone by Jim Maxwell, a local chap who lives near Brockley Station. Highly recommended, his number is 07843 655 628.
Can I come and pick up the paving stones - the Sandbourne Road garden project could probably use them...
Hi Tamsin, I also have a few cement slabs that I want to get rid of. A few of them (5 or 6) are still in one piece. Let me know if interested. Sonia
Thanks, but eleven is probably enough!
Hi Tamsin
You are very welcome to them and i would be happy to see them go.
Can you send me your email address so we can agree a time/day for collection and i'll give you my home address/mobile as well.
Really glad someone wants/needs them.
Don't seem to be able to e-mail you - no e-mail contact on your profile.
You could e-mail me?
Hi Tamsin
If you check my profile now you will be able to email me.
I'm using my partner's laptop and can't see your email address without logging on to his email!
Anyway, if you email me I'll send you all my details.
Can anyone recommend a local wasp nest remover?
Hi, Have just used Jason Lock (no pun) to fit a new front door (actually he made it to order) plus locks and painting etc to a great finish. Good value for the finish and work involved. Contact him on jason182@live.co.uk or 07922 206933. Nice guy, on time, reliable, honest.
I realise there's more important things to worry about than my 2 wasps nests, but doesn't anyone have any experience of a company/man/woman that'll remove them. The buzzing is drowning out the sirens.
Try the council first perhaps...
Re wasps there was a post some time ago about this, can't remember if there were any recommendations you'll have to dig around and look.
However from experience the best way to get rid is in when it is much colder and they are dormant. In the mean time what about a wasp trap to attract them away from you.
We used Critter Solutions http://www.crittersolutions.co.uk/aboutus.html
for mice, he is based in Brockley, may be worth trying him and asking. Seemed v honest and straight forward. Lastly are you covered on your house insurance as they may well arrange it for free.
Hope this helps
Thanks Trudi, I need to get it done asap I've had to cancel loft insulation because of the nests, otherwise I'd wait till the winter when they leave, apparently. I remember a while ago there was a posting about this, but the 'search'
tool doesn't bring anything up.
Tamsin thanks, I didn't think the council would help, I haven't tried them I expected them to be the most expensive, time consuming, unreliable option.
Could anyone recommend someone to fit new guttering?
Thanks in advance.
Hi there. I need to renovate a bathroom. Any suggestions for a nice, and not too expensive, plumber/builder?
I had my bathroom done by Jacek at My Nice Home, 07749 391 202 and was happy with both the price and the finished product. I sourced all the fittings (bath/sink/taps etc.) myself; Jacek and his team did the ripping out and reinstallation.
We moved to Brockley two weeks ago and this thread has been really useful - thanks for all the suggestions.
We used Abacus, as recommended in several posts, for connecting a gas oven. Friendly, on time, efficient. http://www.abacusgas.com/
We also used DC Painting and Decorating (Doreen and David, based in Brockley) to repair a water-damaged ceiling. Again, really friendly, and they were able to do the work quickly.07940146498
Patrick, Amn, thank you very much!
We found Richard - a man and van (KOALA VANS) on the classifieds section of this blog. Thank You.
Friendly, reliable and incredibly hard-working, I would definitely recommend Richard and we will use him again in the future.
Can anyone recommend a window cleaner who is able to do the first and second floors of a house (there is a lower ground floor flat and a ground floor flat below me)?
Hello everyone.
We're looking for a good, reliable, local tradesman who is HETAS registered and can check our flue, install a woodburner and fireplace surround.
Anyone had anything similar done and can make any recommendations?
Cheers
Wondering if anyone can help.
We're looking for a HETAS registered local tradesman to check our chimney flue and fit a wood burner and fire surround in time for the winter. Needs to be HETAS as we live in the conservation area.
Anybody had any similar work done on their own properties?
Any suggestions very welcome
Ali
Can anyone recommend a tiler please? Preferably local as it's not that big a job.
Just had our kitchen completely re-done, doors moved, ceiling down, everything.
Complete Property Maintenance managed the whole thing really professionally and finished everything to a really high standard.
Would highly recommend on quality and price.

Tiler - Marcus from MW Tiling and Plastering. He did some tiles in my kitchen. It was only a small job but he did it to a very high standard and is a very nice guy.
Tiler - Totally forgot to add Marcus's phone number: 07817050159
Another recommendation for Chris the plumber/gas fitter: 07881628045
One call and he came round in half an hour.
Anyone know where I can get some 3mm ply? Preferably fairly pretty and not in a huge sheet. Only need a little bit.
Catford Timber or Whitten Timber (Peckham). The latter at least have loads of panel off-cuts at extortionate "special prices" (but cheaper than a full sheet). Whether they will have any 3mm off-cuts is another question. For pretty you want birch. If it was 6mm you could get face veneered stuff, but not in 3mm.
Crikey Danja. You're one of those capenter/lawers. I'm most impressed.
Tamsin I have a very thin strip of 3mm birch ply offcut. How much do you need exactly?
Thanks, both of you. It's my son who is missing his DT lessons. He wants to make a box so not that much. 6" by 18" would probably be enough, 9" by 2ft would be ample. More would be gratefully received to inspire him with other things and allow for errors.
If you could e-mail me with your address and a convenient time to collect I will send him round.
Can anyone recommend a window fitting company? I have just moved into a top floor converted flat in Telegraph Hill and would like to get rid of the ugly metal framed windows with sash windows to keep with most of the houses in the area. Any recommendations would be welcome!
re windows there is someone on North Cross Rd in East Dulwich, they measured up for us, seemed good; however we found out that we couldn't go ahead due to the silly terms of our lease.
