South East London tradespeople recommendations
Builders, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, roofers, and so on - which tradesmen entrance you? Use this thread to recommend local suppliers to other Brockley readers. Brockley Central does not endorse any of the providers mentioned on this thread.
Please don't use this thread to discuss locals shops, cafes, etc. There are countless other places on Brockley Central where you can do that.

«Oldest ‹Older 1 – 200 of 1004 Newer› Newest»I use Abacus for my central heating, always done a good job and turn up on time. Usually get this slightly insane scottish engineer sent to me. Lovely man and will explain EXACTLY how central heating works....whether you like it or not.
http://www.abacusgas.com/
Brockley Park Cars to keep your polar bear murdering car on the road.
Grant Roofing for...erm...roofs. Not the cheapest quote, he was mid range. But worked quickly and was the only one who INSISTED that i get council Building Control sign off, he organised all that. Had a couple of snags to fix after he finished, a leaky gutter and the aerial had been knocked out of line. He sent chaps around the next morning, no quibbling.
I could give you a list of who to avoid like the plague but I may get sued.
Tradesman entrance?? Snigger.....
Watling Tyres, Catford. Reasonable prices and quick to.
http://www.watlingtyres.co.uk/
Can anyone recommend a general decorator/handyperson?
Just used someone called Gary, who replaced our boiler through his gas mate Freddie, who didn't finish the job and has now disappeared. I can provide more details if anyone needs them.
Saglio Boilers in Catford.
http://www.saglio.co.uk/
Alcove Queens for shelving and general carpentry wonderfulness.
http://www.alcovequeens.co.uk/
Anyone know a half-decent fencer? Got Browns in before Christmas based on a BC recommendation but they still haven't come round to do the work! Beginning to get exasperated.
If you need a plumber in Brockley, like highlander, there can be only one!
I would give a 100% recommendation for Rosie Riley. She did a fantastic job re-doing my bathroom, I can hardly believe its the same room and wish I'd done it sooner. Sound, practical, no-nonsense advice, great finish and the peace of mind in knowing its all been done properly. She advertises in the Brockley Society Newsletter and does an absolute sterling job.
...and she is even included on a Time Out list of London's Essential Services www.timeout.com/london/features/2927/7.html
Rosie Riley
Covers south-east London for all types of plumbing work, but will cover the whole city for major work.
(020 8692 3375/ 07932 566039).
I'm sure you know that the boiler fitter must be 'gas safe' registered. The bloke who did mine was not, Abacus sorted it out for me.
Had my cupboards done by Nigel Eaton (google him) did a great job.
Plumbing by Jo - is the cheapest plumber i have found locally. Also female.
I've just had my kitchen & bathroom redone (electrics, plumbing, tiling, underfloor heating, woodwork etc) by Jamie from Complete Property Maintenance (www.completepropertymaintenance.net), although based in Maidstone he was happy to cover this area and was here by 8am every day even through the snow & ice and was really hard working, reliable and a reasonable price as well (half the cost of some quotes from more local people)
Does anyone have a cleaner who they could recommend? Ideally someone who could also do ironing?
I have had a bad experience with Blue Mantle on Old Kent Road - I would not recommend their fireplace fitting.
snap....bought a fireplace, fine. Fitting - rubbish.
I would like to recommend Rosie the plumber but she seems so popular locally that I have never successfully booked her in for a job because she has always been booked up for months.
Brown Electrical services are a great local, fully certified company based on Grierson Road:
http://www.brownelec.co.uk/contact.php
Though he's moved to Kent from SE4, I can't recommend Steve from Chunk Originals highly enough. He specialises in reclaimed wood & had built the old table at Moonbow Jakes. He designed our reclaimed wood kitchen and we are going to have him do us another one as we are soon to move house.
I have used Attila Kadar for carpentry. His work is actually first rate, and he is very trustworthy and an all-round good egg. (Number posted in spam-defying code, hopefully.)
0-seven-8-nine-5 9 1 one 78 eight
I'm one of those people who is very weary of strangers being in my home, so thank you BC, a great thread!
I'd like to add another recommendation for 'Plumbing by Jo'
Yep, would second the Chunk Originals endorsement - have a lovely table and bathroom cabinet Steve made.
DFS Flooring http://www.dfsflooring.co.uk (Crescent Way) did a good job on sanding my floors when I first moved into my flat 10 years ago.
If anyone is after insulation work, I can recommend Dhanya Gangitano(Tyrwhitt Rd) - he did my underfloor insulation and solid wall insulation. It wasn't cheap, and took longer than anticipated due to finding rotten joists etc, but they did a really thorough job. He's just done an MA in sustainable construction and knows his stuff.
If anyone knows a reliable tiler please let me know.
LB
Mick 'The Greek' Plasterer, works out of the east end. Bit far for him to travel but did a great job for me. 07909 567107
Fireplaces: westcombe fireplaces on the Lee High Rd.
Bespoke Carpentry: Richard Jennings-Bramly (local who's details can be found via Yell - did a stonkingly good job on in built shelves).
I recently had a new boiler and bathroom fitted through Speargold (http://www.speargold.co.uk/speargold.html). Ask for Brett. Very personable service, no more frustrations than you'd get with any other reasonably sized operation, but not the cheapest.
When it came to doing my kitchen, budgets were a bit tighter and I decided to go with a cheap and cheerful option and found these guys: http://www.kitchenssoutheastlondon.co.uk/ I think it's just the one guy who does most of the work - certainly a small operation. Ask for David. It was a relatively simple job and I went for cheap units and sourced appliances directly to keep the costs down, but I can't fault the work they did. Pretty quick and happy to do a few extra bits and pieces. Good tiling.
Twitter folk will already know this but my plumber is fab. I actually got his details from Maradoll, so she should claim all the credit. His name is Scott Hunter and his number is 07983 704 069. He's based in Croydon.
Hi Guys,
I need someone to have a look at some damp that i have in my kitchen. does anyone have any recommendations??
Cheers
Can second the recommendations for Saglio's. For electricians, MB Electrics is your best bet, 07762 882 382.
Gosh, this is useful. Does anyone know of any good upholsterers?
@ Anonymous with a damp kitchen. Firstly, have you got adequate ventilation? It could be as much about condensation as damp. For a free survey, try Kiltox, based in Lee 08451662070. Their surveyor John Adams definitely seemed to know his stuff. Kenwood also do free surveys. Avoid Rosewood!
Starbucks next to Brockley Mess are excellent upholsterers.
I can also recommend Starbucks upholstery. They did a fantastic job for us recently for a very competetive price. We would definitely use them again.
If you're looking for an electrian then I would recommend Murat who lives in Crofton Park (Tel 07762882382). He was recommended on the Which? website by lots of satisfied customers too.
yes agree Starbucks v good. They've done a great job recovering a sofabed for me - also fitting slatted blinds
MD.FURNISHERS in Sydenham are great for blinds - excellent choice, efficient service - owner measures and fits everything himself so no possibility of problems.
Here, here! Rosie Riley the plumber is the best! I'm sure she did way too much, for the money we paid her. When does that ever happen??!
For dishwasher and washing machine repairs you can't beat Gabriel Speedy Repairs, 0208 692 7959. Based on Tressillian Road. Technically excellent, absolutely honest and reliable, very long-established local firm.
Rosie Riley is great, but doesn't do central heating and other gas related stuff - for that, try Martin Kelson, Kelgas. Completely honest, professional, and a nice chap.
Used Mersh Bros garage in Lewisham recently, after much research on the internet. They're tucked away down a back alley, off Algernon road. I was impressed with the service, and how organised it all was. The car was MOTd and serviced ready to collect the same day. They also do while-u-wait MOT. The price is not exactly cheap but I think is in line with most London garages!
how much for an mot?
I've had my car MOT'd by the garage on St. Asaph Road - Dundalk Motors (?) - for the last two years. Friendly, helpful and fast - and able to fit me in at very short notice.
I've used Mersh Bros for over 25 years. They are professional, friendly and will replace a bulb free of charge if that's all that's failing the MOT. I also use the excellent mechanic based there and combine the service and MOT in one day.
Any curtain recommendations? If they were prepared to put the curtains up as well I'd be over joyed! High ceilings are lovely but a bit impractical sometimes!
We've bought blinds, ready-made and made to measure curtains from Paul Simon in Catford (fallen on hard times since he split with Art, ha ha ha). Not a local firm really, it's a chain, but there was a good choice, the service was good and they weren't excessively priced.
I can also recommend Rosie Riley for general plumbing work. She is quite busy though.
Lou Baker. We had a great Turkish guy from AVT tiling (i think he was Mr AVT). He did a fantastic job.
http://www.avt-tiling.co.uk/
My god, Rosie the Plumber unites so many of us! She's a legend. She has known generations of owners of my flat and is a wealth of info apart from anything else. You have to wait ages cos of her popularity - but she's worth it. I would love to read an interview with her some time (hint). Also second Saglio for boilers and MB Electrics for, er electrics. And thanks for curtains recommendation - was on the lookout for such a service this very day!
Let's not go overboard, I'm being circumspect about what I'm saying about local companies. Caveat emptor people.
What about painters and decorators? need some work done quickly and cheaply...
Decorating cannot be done quickly and cheaply unless you want a quick and cheap looking job that lasts about 6 months.
It's an underappreciated trade and there are a lot of cowboys around. Good preparation prior to painting or papering is essential and this takes time. The decorator I used to have has moved on and the last person I employed, despite charging £130 a day, was not good enough for me to recommend I'm afraid.
@ali
Try the curtain workshop in Deptford. Don't they have a website but the woman's call Sabina.
Great handmade curtains and they'll put them up too. We've got a few sets from her.

Another vote for Murat (MB Electrics) - I only needed minor work doing but he did it quickly and well, and didn't try to con me into rewiring my whole house in the process.
Thanks for this thread - very useful.
Obviously Rosie Riley's wonderful, but difficult to get hold of lately.
Avoid Yes! Handyman like the plague.
Can anyone recommend a decent handyman/carpenter to fix some drawers, mend a floorboard and put some decent shelves in the larder?
Also, a little while ago in the Brockley Mess I saw a postcard for a company than renovate Victorian tiles, doors, gardens etc. Anyone know who they are?
Very grateful to these posts as I needed an electrician to help on very short notice, I called Murat who lives in Crofton Park (Tel 07762882382) Thanks to Anon 1st Feb for the tip. He came within hours even though it was late. He didn't just do the job but took time to show us how to use our new appliance and he was NOT a rip off.
At those seeking painting/decorators, we used a chap called Tim Flynn (07951 574434) who was very friendly, reasonably priced, good at staying in contact (ie letting you know if he was going to be late, which was extremely rare) and did a good job with lots of prep and advice/consultation. They replastered our ceiling and painted the living room and two bedrooms, I was very happy with what they did. Not sure where he is based but he was happy come to Crofton Park!
Super thread and thanks to everyone for their contributions. Will follow up several of these.
Can anyone recommend a good place locally for car bodywork repairs?
Thanks.
can anyone say yes to yes handyman? Ive had a reasonable quote and wonder if anyones had any involvment with this company?
I am the Managing Director of YesHandyman Building Services Limited.
A posting by a Cherry Darling on 03/02/10 stating "Avoid Yes! Handyman like the plague" has been brought to my attention by 5 diffrent clients.
I am not aware of any complaint about my company or any of my operatives. In light of this I will like further clarification on this posting as it does no way refelects my company's mission to provide for our customers the highest level of services at fair and market competitive prices, whether it be handyman services, new home construction , office or retail maintenance or home improvement projects which include room additions, kitchen, bathroom , basement remodelling and exterior renovations and our commitment to turn an industry notorious for poor service into a service business and my pledge as the owner , to do everything in my power to ensure that my organisation provides you with a level of service unmatched within the industry.
Used Rosie the plumber today and would like to add to the many recommendations for her - she is great! Had to wait a week for an appointment though, but worth it.
sorry this thread is for positive recommendations
What did Cherry write?
Sorry Nick, I didn't mean to sidetrack this very useful thread. :-)
Can anyone recommend a cat flap fitter?
Prop Zig and Cocoa Belle would be delighted if you could.
Can anyone recommend a surveyor for a new house purchase? Not looking for a cheap and cheerful valuation but a proper detailed report.
We used Laundon Associates based in SE London for two recent full structural house surveys (now called building surveys) - 020 8761 5444. We have found them to be very thorough and helpful with suggestions when the first survey turned up major problems, including suggestions about negotiating price and a recommendation for a tradesperson to do the work. Ended up using them again when the first vendor decided to pull the house off the market just before exchange, and we're very pleased with the detail of the survey they've just done for the new house we are buying instead.
hello all - does anyone have a tip for a carpenter? I need an in-built tv unit. Thank you
Does anyone have a recommendation for a tradesperson who would be able to lay a new patio for us? Nothing complicated. A bit of concrete and then some brick laying.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a tradesperson who would be able to lay a new patio for us? Nothing complicated. A bit of concrete and then some brick laying.
After spending the last year doing up our house and using all the various tradesmen necessary, the only one I would very highly recommend is flooring guy Steve Linke at Dulwich Flooring.
Email: link.floors@googlemail.com
He laid our carpets, lino and will do some decking for us when we save up. Hes such a nice guy and we couldn't be happier with the results, price and help he gave.
Email him for recommendations - Sounds like I work for him but anyone who has stumbled across a tradesman to whom you can entrust your home will understand....
I'm looking for someone to remove several tons of soil from my back garden, put up a new fence, lay a patio etc. Any suggestions?
No suggestions, Moira, but I need the same doing (in about eight months when I've saved up the money!) so if you find anyone good, let me know.
I could ask my neighbour who he used to get the work done in his garden if you like?
They removed eight skips worth of old building rubble and soil from his back garden which had accumlated on the previous owner's 30+ years of owning the house.
They did a pretty excellent job whoever they were.
That would be great, Pete. Thanks.
Patrick - I will let you know as I'm hoping to get it done in the next couple of months. If you'd like to send me an email to me at brockleymaxdotcodotuk in case I forget to post on here.
Pete- I'd be interested too, thanks
Tomas on 07950 119017 did very good grunt work digging out a patio for me, much cheaper than other quotes I had, and he has a very quick and hardworking bunch of lads.
If anyone has problems with their dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer, cooker, etc, I can recommend AB Heating & Domestic Appliances.
http://www.abdomesticappliances.co.uk/
They're prompt, courteous, well-priced and offer very good after-appointment follow-up support too.
Can any one recommend some one who would do a garden makeover?
Here.
Hi- Can anyone recommend a good local window cleaner? Its for a third floor flat so ladders wont work.
Extra brownie points if they also use chemical free natural stuff too- but any recommendations welcome
Thank you
I'd like to recommend Sids for plumbing work. We sprang a leak last week and they were round in an hour, job done and no hefty 'emergency' call out fee.
We've used Rosie Riley before and called her first but she was busy so suggested Sids.
Can anyone recommend a good handyman. Have some maintenance jobs that need doing and guttering that needs repairing. Thanks
Sorry re-posting to get it back on recent comments....
Can anyone recommend a good handyman. Have some maintenance jobs that need doing and guttering that needs repairing. Thanks
Having moved in recently, I'm looking for a good gardener to tidy up what has clearly been a very well maintained garden in the past PLUS keep it in good condition going forward.
I've let it slide with the move and getting everything else straightened out...
THanks very much
I'm about to get some quotes for quite a bit of building work / renovation. Does anyone have any feedback on Bells of Westminster?
I think they are very good, but expensive. I haven't used them for that reason but other friends have.
Looking for a recommendation for someone to repair our Miele fridge/freeser
thanks
Does anyone have a recommendation for a local odd-job/handyperson? I need the washer replaced on a dripping tap which I thought was something I could manage but it appears even turning off the spigot is beyond my pathetic abilities. Sids said call Rosie but I am resistant to calling an expensive plumber for a washer!
*rolls eyes* you'll be rubbish in five years when the country is on it's knees, the poles have gone home and the lights have gone out. Look out meedja luvies, a well crafted press release is no good when your having to fix your boiler with a spoon.
Heh, heh, heh.....
I know, I know. Plus have been overdosing on Max Brooks lately and realise that my class editing skillz will not help me much in the impending zombie apocalypse. In the meantime I'm too feeble to turn the spigot, if someone cares to volunteer/recommend someone I'll craft them a lovely press release (Brockley Central version of LETS).
Hi, Can someone recommend a good builder in the area? Bells of westminster have been mentioned, anyone had dealings with Sheridan's? any others?
Need to have a wall removed and floor raised in kitchen. Just moved into the area...
Thanks
Hi,
Can anyone recommend a good painter & decorator?
Can anyone recommend a good person who is capable of putting up a fence?
Have just had Jo from Plumbing by Jo round to fix my kitchen tap, thanks to this thread.
She turned up on time, was very nice, fixed my tap and gave me some advice about various other plumbing related things and didn't charge me a fortune.
I love this blog.
Can anyone recommend someone to replace some windows and deal with a few maintenance issues?
FG - We used Stuart Jones from South London Fencing - 07971 963316.
We're very happy with our fence. Was pricey but cheaper than other quotes! Never realised how expensive fencing can be.
By chance we've recently had some rotted fence panels and posts replaced by a local carpenter, who also moved some kitchen units from one wall to another and did a little painting.
The fencing looks fine now, and the price seems reasonable though I'm no expert. I found that he can be stopped from whistling with mugs of tea. He's Colin and his mobile number is 07535 711360
Rachel, don't know if you ever found anyone to sort your guttering out but I found someone on MyHammer to do ours which was broken, and he was lovely and great prices. Based in Norwich but happy to come here!
His name was Steve mob. 07749 573912 and on MyHammer he goes by norwichhandyman. He also does things like laying patios, repointing chimneys etc.
Some recommendations...
Tiler - Ahmed from AVT Tiling, Hither Green 020 8461 2607. Brilliant.
Floorboard sanding and lacquering - Daniel from DH French Polishers, Orpington 01689 619775.
Made to measure mirrors - Glass Designs Ltd in Greenwich 020 8858 8050
Made to measure curtains - Gooden Textiles of Deptford 020 8692 7804
..and not in south east London, but very impressed with work of Classic Cornice 020 8874 0221
Hi
I am looking to build a small extension on a property in the Brockley conservation area, and I was wondering if anyone was able to recommend an architect or builder that may have done good work in the area previously?
Thanks
Matthew
There is the Green Tea Architects in the Tea Factory. No idea how good they are though
Arrgh, came back from a few days away to discover my roof is leaking. Terrified of roofer rip-offs from goggling at too many BBC consumer shows ... anyone have any recommendations?
Hi, D & J Roofers were very good, we had Steve round recently to take down a leaking chimney stack... good, fast job, no mess & slightly cheaper than the other quote we had.
Thanks so much Bec! Will give them a ring ... much appreciated!
I used grant roofing. Did a good job
We need someone to opine on some (definite) damp and on what to do about it (unclear as yet).
Can anyone recommend an honest and likely-to-be-correct damp expert, without a vested interest in selling us some highly expensive chaos inducing damp proofing course?.
Cheers MB, will try them too - thanks!
Can anybody recommend any builders in the area?
thanks
Bec
Anyone got recommendations and/or rough idea of price for repointing a house, including scaffolding hire, for a bog-standard 2-storey brockley victorian terrace?
Agree with others recommending Saglios for all things boiler related.
Hi Kakkerlakken, Cleanpoint (020 8770 1088) have quoted us the following:
Scaffold - £260
Re-point - £850
repair stonework - £500
We're also having the paint removed from the front, so the quote might vary.
They haven't started work yet but they seem good. I asked to see exampes of their work and it looked v good.
they also came out cheapest; got quotes from: Mahon Brickwork - excellent but quite expensive & Restore Brickwork - they were quite late in getting the quote back which is why we didn't go with them.
I'll report back when Clenpoint have started work!
bec
I can recommend a few trades people have used
Rosie Riley plumber mentioned lots already but.. 07932 566039
alcovequeens for built-in shelves, cupboards etc- lovely work- v professional
www.alcovequeens.co.uk
sarah 07956454235
Clif- plumber/gas fitter, fair prices, very very thorough. 07881628045
paula the decorator, nice woman, good prices 02086908117
ziggy she does plastering, decorating general building 07811305174
Oh dear - my third address in the area and again, jerry-built standard has left a noise nightmare with neighbours' TV, music etc. Has anyone had any luck with any sound-proofing companies? Thanks for this website by the way, it is a treat.
I am looking for a good builder for a bathroom installation and to put up some stud walls - should be a fairly simple job. We are after someone reliable and reasonable. Any suggestions welcome! Thanks.
Does anyone know of a decent dentist in the area?
Does anyone know a good cleaner or cleaning agency in the area? Thanks
can anyone recommend a good and affordable plasterer? thanks
OK just wanted to add another huge vote for Murat at MB Electricals, I called him based on the recommendations here, he turned up in 40 minutes. Amazing. Fixed what need fixing, helped sort out stuff that wasn't his job but also needed doing (getting the dishwasher back where it should be!) and was super helpful. Great guy, great service. Thank you BC for the introduction!
Does anyone know of a decent dentist in the area?
Bit late perhaps, but I have found the one above the Barclays at New Cross to be very good. I think it is called the Dental Care Centre.
Plasterer... Mick "the Greek" he's grekk funnily enough. His accent is a tad Impenatrable but he's plastering not giving elocution lessons.
A one man band so may fit you in around other jobs, vie used him. A couple of times and found him excellent and very reasonable. 07909 567107
Re the dentist, if you are at the CP end of Brockley then I have found the one diagonally opposite Jam Circus on Brockley Road good - and they happily take NHS patients. They are called Ziman and Associates and are very friendly and helpful.
Can anyone recommend someone who can do external decorations?
We also want someone to do some work in the garden including laying some flagstones and erecting a shed.
@ Anne, my norwichhandyman could do that for you (see post on 7th July) - Steve mob. 07749 573912
Fireplace removal. Any recommendations?
I removed one at my place some time ago (when replacing an ugly newish one with something more in keping wioh what waqs there originally).
The removal is basically hard labour and you don't need any kind of specialist to do that. Perhaps a decorator might do it?
If you're having a replacement fitted, that's where you need someone who's experienced
Whoops, should read:
(when replacing an ugly newish one with something more in keeping with what was there originally).
Don't use the clowns at that big reclamation place on the A2. Ok for buying a reclaimed fireplace but their instalation work is awful
Most of their fireplaces are a long way from reclaimed these days as well (assuming you mean Blue Mantle).
Hi - looking for a window cleaner, can anyone recommend one? Nicky
We recently had our kitchen and bathroom renovated and had some bespoke cabinets made. We went with Simon Bird Building. His work was impeccable. Other builders came in with lower quotes, but Simon was pleasant, reliable and a real craftsman.
Simon Bird 07970400361
we need someone to take down a supporting wall and put a beam in between our kitchen and dining room. Also need an internal doorway bricked up and a new doorway knocked through in a different location. ANy recommendations? thanks
We need someone to clean our guttering and rehang/shave our front door.
Really would welcome recommendations.
Can recommend Andy Milne for window cleaning - I've used him for years. Tel: 0208 854 9454.
I'm also after someone to shave and rehang a door. Let me know if you find one.
Has anyone had the electrics rewired in their house/flat? Any local electricians you'd recommend for it? (And any idea of prices locally?)
I'll need to get rewiring done at a 2 bed Victorian flat I'm buying just outside Brockley in SE13.
That Murat chap (MB electrics) mentioned above seems to have a good rep. Not used him myself.
Don't forget to insist on an NICEIC certificate when finished.
Urgently need someone to clear (possibly fix) our guttering. Has anyone used a local person/company they could recommend?
Can anyone recommend a good mechanic - we used to use Mersh Bros but they have had to close. Our ford focus needs some tlc...
Foxberry Road Garage (also known as Helical Gearboxes).
The boss is called Paul and I'd thoroughly recommend them.
I don't think that they are open on Saturdays though, although this may have changed.
http://www.helical-gearboxes.co.uk/
I can heartily recommend Charlie McCalla for any carpentry work. He built some bespoke wardrobes and shelves for me a few years ago, and revamped my kitchen (new worktops, cupboards, tiling) last year. His work is absolutely top quality and he's an excellent bloke.

Based in Catford.
Greenwich Glass & Joinery have been doing something for me for the last week, not quiet finished but looking splendid. Will give them my blessing when they're done and I've assessed the impact to my biscuit stash which they have been methodically working their way through.
Greenwich Joinery have just finished a lean to/conservatory thing.
They turned this...

into this...
http://yfrog.com/b9x3glj
http://yfrog.com/n458kj
excellent work, as far as i can tell. They make their own doors and frames so can make things fit exactly, they made the door match another I have onto the garden. They cleaned up after themselves and were reliable. Not the cheapest quote i had but glad I went with them.
(01322 225 700, 07507360658 ask for Tommy)
Don;t worry Reg, no kickbacks or other shady deals were made.
...oh they do sash windows as well. He was doing his best to flog me some, too skint for that.
I understood that the great Mersch Brothers were planning to find new premises not too far away - had anyone heard anything?
@Monkeyboy, that's a cracking addition to the place! I too have heard good things about Greenwich Joinery, though as you say they are at the premium end of things. Shame to lose that original man-shed though - looked like a mock-tudor classic ;)
@Mondee, the Mersch Bros site is absolutely massive so I'm assuming they're moving because it's going to become another stunning apartment development, rather than they've outgrown it?
I spoke to Mersh Bros a month ago and they were waiting to hear about premises in Catford. They are going to let me know when they move, and as I haven't heard from they I assume they are still in situ. If you ask to go on their list they'll keep you updated.
Can anyone recommend a plumber please? (Other than Rosie Riley who I already know about? THanks
@ Aricana and anybody else wanting a cat flap installed, I just wanted to offer a word of caution about someone operating locally, namely Colin Darrall of catflapfitter.co.uk. I would advise people not to contact him – after taking a deposit for fitting a new cat flap, he never showed up to do the work, rarely answered his phone, would not return my calls. Sadly a bit of googling suggests I’m not the only person who’s had a bad experience with catflapfitter.co.uk. I have contacted the ripofftipoff website operated by trading standards, but I think this is one of those times where I have to cut my losses!
Catflapfitter... now THAT is a niche bussiness.
also can't recommend rosie riley highly enough. She's absolutely worth waiting for if you can.
Also, rate Murat from MB electrical very highly too, have used him on and off for 10 years now.
I can recommend Jo for plumbing very highly. Local, efficient, reliable. 07810717541
Another niche business. Suitase wheels. Does anybody know anybody who fixes them ?
OOps meant to say suitcase not suitase !
If Mersh Bros aren't operating at the moment can anyone please recommend somewhere for me to get an MOT and service for my car.
Thanks in advance.
Just found a new number for Mersh Bros. 02086984794. They have moved to Bellingham trading estate but are not trading yet. Waiting for licence. They will hopefully be trading after the 4th October.
Unfortunately this doesn't help me as my MOT is due. Any recommendations appreciated.
Brockley Park Cars, by the station - the one with the murals. Best be quick before BC readers raze it to the ground in a fit of slightly anoyed middle class hysteria.
Always did a good job for me.
Thanks mb.
Have used Kar Klinik before by the cemetry, they were fine.
Hi,can anybody recommend a good and reliable plasterer. Thanks
Used Abacus Gas today thanks to recommendations here and can second the recs - he was excellent. Apparently he also services the boiler for someone one house up from mine who is also a BC reader/commenter but he couldn't remember the person's name on here. I'm curious now! Apparently a man with a motorbike. Anyone?
Also can recommend Gareth Williams for carpet fitting. He's based in SE London. He's now done carpets for me in this flat and laminate in a previous flat and his work is excellent. Reliable and reasonable prices, and comes to you with a van full of samples so no need to go anywhere. gwcarpets[at]aol.com
Does anyone have a recommendation for someone to replace some wooden sash windows and to recondition some others? Nearly all of our windows need some attention, so would be good to get someone reliable on the job.
Many thanks to all for their recommendations on this thread - so helpful!
Bathroom fitter - Stuart 07956 300 898. We've used him several times. He's reliable, does a good job and is very reasonable. He brings his own tiler who has an excellent finish. We're having a new bathroom next month and are giving him keys to do it while we're away. He's trustworthy
Could try Greenwich joinery for your windows, they do those. They did my small conservatory/leantoo and were excellent - if a little expensive (01322 225 700, 07507360658 ask for Tommy)
My leaking roof needs to be replaced soonest. I've noted the earlier mentions of D&J and Grant Roofing. I will contact them, and wonder if anyone has other roofing/roofer suggestions?
Have just used Murat from MB electricals based on the reviews on here and he was excellent. Was running late but called to let me know, cleaned up behind themseleves and did a good job. Would definitely recommend him.
Just to follow up on recommedations:
1. Abacus Gas. Fitted a new boiler for us in a different room. Great quote, fantastic service, showed us how it all worked and even helped us get a plumber for water pressure issues. Brilliant.
2. Jamie at completepropertymaintenace.net. Fitted some new kitchen units. Fantastic fitting, great service. Looks great.
Both recommended from here and I would recommend them to anyone.
That chap from Abacus is a bit of a 'character' isn't he! Could talk the hind legs off a donkey :)
I would highly recommend DRK Decorating. Amazing attention to detail and work is of a very high quality.
They cover: Interior and Exterior decorating, Tiling, Flooring, Refurbishments and Overhauling windows
Check the website for testimonials and pics!
http://www.drkdecorating.co.uk/
That was so subtle and cunning like a fox, what you just did there.
@Danja... what was? I just thought that rather than me go on and on about what a good job was done based on nothing other than my opinion, people could see photos and other testimonials on the website.
The work is of great quality, they refurb sash windows and do exteriors which people have mentioned a lot on this thread. Also have lots of experience in doing houses in this area so know lots about preserving original features for all you conservation buffs out there - including stripping 50 years worth of paint from ceiling roses etc...
Does anyone know of any good dressmakers in the area? I'm looking for more than just alterations.
Thanks to everyone for recommendation of Murat of MB Electronics ... I called him over for a doorbell-gone-mad and he was a gem. Now hoping someone might know of a good person for clearing guttering, and for hedge trimming and garden clearance?
We've also just used Murat on the back of BC recommendations - nice bloke, fairly priced and reliable. He's done a great job and left the place tidy. Recommended
R H SERVICES is a very good waste management company to deal with. The owner Ray is most helpful I would suggest if anyone has any rubbish to move? call him!
He cleared my garage for £250.00, no hassles, no moaning & unlike these one man bands he didn't try to up the price half way through the job
Highly recommended!!
www.rhservices.org.uk or call Ray on 07774424041
Try WJ-Dlights for electrical work. Wayne is qualified and NICEIC approved and can certify his own work. Very polite, works neat and tidy and to a high standard. 0208 405 4307 or 07985 326595
Can anyone recommend a good property lawyer to deal with a recalcitrant freeholder?
Can anyone recommend someone to do our kitchen and possibly bathroom? I am going to call Jamie of complete property maintenance but would like to get a couple more recommendations.
Thanks
Can anyone recommend a reliable and reasonably priced tradesperson to do some floor sanding? We are refurbing a 3 bedroom house with wooden floors throughout which need sanding and finishing. I understand it's quite easy to make a real hash of it, so would like to get some professional quotes! Thanks.
I used Mick Ash for boiler and radiator stuff on the recommendation of SIDS - was very happy.
We used South London Fencing (thanks for the recommendation Rachel!) and can thoroughly recommend them. Very professional and did a great job.
Really pleased to see that this thread is getting put to such good use.

Hi, Has anyone dealt with Kiltox in Lee, for ventilation installation? Any feedback welcome.
Thanks,

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced, trustworthy painter/decorator please?
@ suzyblues
Have a look at: http://www.drkdecorating.co.uk/
They did my mum's floors beautifully and most importantly without covering the rest of the house in dust!
Do you have aerial man to recommend?
I highly recommend Dave Milne (Andy's brother, quoted above or perhaps below, as Andy doesn't do Forest Hill)for WINDOW WASHING. Very thorough, prompt, quick and friendly.
Also good value!
Hi All - Very useful post but I can't find many recos for builders? Can anyone recommend a good one? Also has anyone used MPRM builders based in Brockley?
We've been using Bells of Westminster and they have been very good. Workmanship is excellent (plastering, pipework & electrics) but they are expensive and don't always communicate clearly. this is our first project, so the communication thing is down to us as much as them I reckon.
Kevin is very good and really knows his stuff. By his own words, he doesn't cut corners and that seems certainly true in our experience.
I'll post a full review once they've finished.
We tried to get a quote from Sheridan's but after seeing the work, never got back with a quote. They were also a bit unreliable making appointments.
Builder: Roy on 07860253635
He is local and has done loads of jobs in the area that are happy to recommend him. Has a really good network of trustworthy contacts i.e. plumbers, plasterers, surveyors etc.
He and his team converted my mum's kitchen which included knocking down a wall, levelling the floor (had to come up by almost a foot), installing a new window, putting in under-floor heating and tiling the floor, instalation of all appliances etc etc etc. Turned up even when it had snowed and the roads were crazy icy in order to get it finished in time for christmas :)
I'm putting this on because apparently my mum can't work out how to post a comment...
Builder: John Leyser - 07971 1359622 and John Neil -07905 2805220 (aka "The Johns")
They've built a two-storey extension to my mother's house in Peckham; completely refurbished our near-derelict house in Nunhead to a very high standard, and built a lovely kitchen for a neighbour.
Based in Kent, but very happy to work in Peckham
Can anyone recommend a reliable builder happy to work with Lewisham Building Control to secure retrospective building control approval for removal of a chimney breast and removal of a partition wall? May require structural remediation. Have any of the builders recommended here worked well with building control officers? Thanks!
Bells of Westminister work with Lewisham Building Control
Can anyone recommend a good accountant for a small business to help with tax return?
Hi, Can anyone recommend a good chimney sweeper? Definitely time to get the fire going!
@ anon, I would recommend Martin Connell for small business accounts. He lives on Prendrell Road, SE4. Can't locate his number number right now but try the web.

I'd like to add a recommendation for Jamie from Complete Property Maintenance. Bang on time each day and did a really thorough job - repainting exterior and repointing - at a reasonable price. Nice bloke too.
Also, followed Monkeyboy's recommendation and had a wardrobe built by Nigel Eaton who did an excellent job.
