Nominate Brockley's worst roads for repair

He got up and walked out to the road. The black shape of it running from dark to dark. Then the distant low rumble. Not thunder. You could feel it under your feet... Something imponderable shifting out there in the dark. The earth itself contracting with the cold. It did not come again... He walked out into the road and stood. The silence. The salitter drying from the earth. The mudstained shapes of flooded cities burned to the waterline. At a crossroads a ground set with dolmen stones where the spoken bones of oracles lay moldering.
- The Road, Cormac McCarthy

Cllr Walton has alerted us to the fact that the Council has approved a budget of £1.525m to improve Lewisham's roads and are now looking for nominations for the borough's worst. We'd rather they spent money on pavements, but there are plenty of atrocious roads in Brockley that would be very deserving candidates for repair.

Please use this thread to nominate the roads that you think should the Council should consider and we'll pass your comments on. Nominations need to be in by April 15th.

Jerningham and Vesta Road need urgent attention.

Montecute road is in a terrible state.

I agree with Jerningham and Vesta, I'd also suggest that Shardeloes inbetween the Brockley Cross roundabouts and the roundabout that leads onto Vesta. Literally a minefield...

Tyrwhitt Road; particularly where it meets Lewisham way is in a sad state.

SPRULES!!!! after the ice it just broke into little pieces...
and Jerningham is actually dangerous... Vesta seems fine to me? In terms of pavements, Wickham is really bad, especially the section between the roundabout (at the top of geoffrey) and ashby road - too many tree roots!

Anonymous said...

Harefield from Brockley Road to Wickham is pretty bad

Tyrwhitt Michael said...

I'll second Mara's nomination of Tyrwhitt Road.

Incidentally a dogging incident was witnessed at the Talbot end rather than Hilly Fields' end of Tyrwhitt Road last Thursday.

Not by me, but by a reliabile witness.

Do the BDS know?

Matt-Z said...

Agree with Kester. Shardeloes from BC to Vesta is atrocious, especially for cyclists.

Anonymous said...

A witness to a dogging tends to actually be a dogger, by the nature of what it is.

I believe the BDS aren't responsible for breakaway groups.

Is anyone who has sex in a car these days now classed as a dogger?

Get rid of the double roundabout and replace with a four way level crossing and improve the paving/parking all round brockley cross and Coulgate street to prevent illegal parking. It's a no brainer, and its to do with roads.

I understand Sprules is due to be resurfaced at some point this Spring.

In the mean time the pot holes have been 'fixed' with a smear of tarmac which doesn't even fill the holes in properly. It is one of the few roads were owning a 4x4 is acceptable.

Tamsin said...

Jerningham - although, to be controversial, it is absolutely pointless until the issue of overweight buses is sorted out.

Steve said...

The pot holes are fine, they're like upside down speed humps but free!

Monkeyboy said...

Steve could be onto something. You should work in PR, thoughts Nick?

There are some strange street names round here, aren't there?

Sprules, Shardeloes, Montacute - would be interesting to know the origins.

ladywell road - massive pot holes and one big ever deepening scar just before the bridge

Long-suffering Brookbank resident said...

Tamsin, re overweight buses, I have had this battle with the council and they CLAIM that when Brookbank is redone - whenever that may be, as it has been postponed since the snow in January - it will solve the problem of the buses destroying the road. This is because Brookbank is to be reSTRUCTURED as opposed to simply resurfaced. So if you try to get funds for Jerningham, make sure it's the full restructure that you go for!

TJ said...

I'd agree with Montague and Thyrwhitt - Montague is in particularly bad order.

Long-suffering Brookbank resident said...

I believe montague is getting done after brookbank. It's to do with having to re-route the bus that way when they do Brookbank I think.

The Cat Man said...

when do we get to nominate the worst paths?

whats the initiation protocol to become a dogger?

Pete said...

Tyrwhitt Road is terrible but so is Ladywell Road.

The damage to Ladywell Road seems to have resulted from the installation of the new traffic lights which has left two deep trenches.

Tyrwhitt road has been bad for ages and really needs some work. Especially as it is a fairly frequently used road. Although that's even more true of Ladywell Road.

Shardeloes.

What about sorting out Brockley cross roundabouts and improving the pedestrian experience at the same time.It seems to be long overdue a sensible overhaul- some landscaping and pavement parking issues could also be considered

Anonymous said...

Harefield Road between Brockley and Wickham Roads. Getting the pavements sorted there would be good too.

Anonymous said...

Echoing previous comments, although not strictly Brockley, Jerningham Road is crying out for some much needed attention. Big, big holes....

Daniel said...

I am pleased that Sprules is due for resurfacing as some of the potholes are dangerously deep. A cyclist on the cycle path could very easily be thrown off their bike if they hit one of them at any speed.

I am sure the buses over the speed humps do not help the state of the road.

Anonymous said...

Mantle road by the pedestrian crossing has a ridiculously bad pot hole - possibly caused by all the contractors vehicles on the building site. I doubt there's a deeper pot hole in the whole of South London.

BCY said...

Wickham Road towards Lewisham Way is terrible, especially if cycling. There are two grooves either side of the road about half a meter from parked cars.

St. Norbert Road is pretty terrible, especially between Brockill Crescent and Brockley Way. The railway bridge at the end of Avignon Road just before it meets Drakefell Road is pretty bad too and floods every time it rains.

Shardeloes is literally the worst road I have driven on in the capital - its unbelievable.

St Norbets Road is unbelievably bad

Headhunter said...

I don't know all the spots people have nominated but I agree that Shardeloes between Brockley X and Vesta is appalling for cyclists, you literally have to swerve all over the road to avoid destroying your wheels and forks by plunging into the enormous holes and cracks. It can be pretty dangerous - either swerve in front of a bus to avoid a huge hole or plunge into it and risk being thrown off the bike or having the bike trashed.

I also agree that Brookbank is a disaster. Is that supposed to be it? Job done? Looks like someone literally splattered some tarmac in 2 lines down the middle of the road 1 afternoon and then left it. It's already starting to break up leaving lumps of tarmac and stones scattered all over the place. Looks like the contractor's YTS boy did it...

On the other hand they've done a beautiful job of the road along the bottom of Hilly Fields (can never remember the name) and the upper patr of Tyrrwhitt. How can there be such huge disparity between "completed" jobs?

Anonymous said...

Brockley Road by BX and down to Harefield is bad for cyclists who have to swerve the potholes and are forced into traffic. Extremely dangerous, especially southbound on the bend. I urge someone to fill these holes.

Anonymous said...

wow, headhunter! we posted at the same time about cyclists near brockley cross swerving potholes/avoiding buses.

Something NEEDS to be done here!

Did I ever mention I'm a bit telepathic?

Brockley Jon said...

Cycling down Montague Av is literally like mountain biking. The humps even serve as jumps.

Headhunter said...

All over London the snow and ice has opened up some absolutely shocking potholes where the snow has damaged further already badly surfaced roads. I've seen some literally 30-50cm across and not far off 30cm deep. There are some on my commute which are so deep they would most certainly wreck the front wheel of any bike, probably destroy the forks and throw the rider into the traffic....

Luckily I've managed to avoid them so far, but keeping your eyes on both the traffic AND potentially life threatening potholes may scare newbie bikers.

cars need roads too said...

...and they damage the suspension on my car.

Brockley Jon said...

It also makes life worse for the residents of the road, as cars rattle and bang going over the potholes.

Long-suffering Brookbank resident said...

@HH: I can happily confirm that the comedy job on Brookbank is NOT the final job. The road was supposed to be completely reconstructed in January - and then the snow arrived. Because they have to divert the buses, rather than just shifting all the other roads back a week our job has been put to the bottom of the list and all the others (Hilly Fields Crescent, top of Tyrwhitt etc) were completed according to the original timetable. Following cries of dismay from several Brookbank residents they did the 'remedial' work on Brookbank, which indeed literally did involve putting two lines of tarmac down the middle of the road in an afternoon. Almost immediately, large bits of gravel came loose and fly dangerously around when the buses speed down the road (don't get me started). After further cries of dismay from Brookbank residents, they have been several times to sweep up the offending gravel. The work was rescheduled for 'some time in April'. Haven't had the letter yet...

Worst bit of road
Brockley X- there appears to have been an incident there and about 10 police cars and police tape up and a complete raffic snafu. Presume there has been a shooting.

Shane Auckland said...

Brookbank Road between Shell Road and Cliffview Road. It was covered in deep holes, but the so-called repair job is no easier on the suspension.

@blair re: Beecroft Rd

its the potholes on the PAVEMENTS that are a problem on Beecroft!

I second all the Harefield Road and top of Tyrwhitt Road nominations. Extremely dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians facing swerving traffic turning off both main roads (Brockley and Lewisham respectively). Especially Harefield on that fast downhill.

Anonymous said...

Brookbank Road. The "Lewisham Superhighway" has needed some TLC for years now.

Anonymous said...

Jerningham Road. Shocking potholes. They can save money by removing the awful speed humps (they serve no purpose - buses still speed down the road, and often use them as 'bmx ramps') and using that material to fill in the holes.

Anonymous said...

Another for Jerningham Road, SE14.

And while they are at it, can the council get the gas board to get on with it's repairs to the bottom of Jerningham? It's a minefield down there, what with the holes, the overhanging bushes, the dogs breakfast...

Why not dig one hole and cover? Why dig 30 holes and leave them open?

Cllr Dean Walton said...

I have probably broken all sorts of terrible protocols in bringing to the attention of Highways Officers roads in other wards - but sometimes it is worth taking a risk...however I have sent the following email to Highways this morning:

Further to your email about the consideration of roads in the 2010/2011 roads programme I asked readers on the Brockley Central blog which roads they would like to flag up in this exercise. A number of roads have been named - including some outside of my ward! Three have stood out - here they are:

BROCKLEY WARD
Harefield Road - section between Wickham Road and Brockley Road - problems further as the road is hilly
Shardeloes Road-section between Vesta Road and Brockley Cross
Tyrwhitt Road - particularly section towards Lewisham Way
Outside of Brockley Ward - this is simply reporting what I have been told - plus I don't really know the details (unless I have said itherwise)

Jerningham Road - I would agree that this is absolutely terrible- and its state is exacerbated by the steep hill (Telegraph Hill Ward)
Montecute Road (not sure which Ward this is in - possibly Crofton Park)
Sprules - Telegraph Hill
St Norbett Road - Telegraph Hill
Brookbank Road - Ladywell Road
Montague Avenue (Ladywell/Crofton Park)
Beecroft Road and Dalrymple Road (mentioned once)
Ladywell Road

The original article is here - with further details on the specific locations.

http://brockleycentral.blogspot.com/2010/04/nominate-brockleys-worst-roads-for.html

Can you let me know whether any of these roads have already been included on the list for completion in 2010/2011 and when you'll be publishing the final list.

Julian B said...

Definitely Jerningham and Pepys Roads. Both now look like something from the third world!

shardeloes inhabitant said...

Without a doubt, Shardeloes Road. Okay I'm biased but the road is a bit of a shocker and I don't even drive. And as a bus route it should be prioritised.

It's not only Vesta road - Brockley Cross section that's need resurfacing: it's the other end (lewisham way). At the first bus stop, opposite the halls of residence, both sides of the road are sinking. Resurfacers have slung some tarmac down but it's a shoddy job and coming apart again. Plus opposite brindley Street cracks are appearing length and width ways across the road. A collapsing manhole on the road due to pots holes caused a bus to blow a tyre recently.

The roads seem to have got a lot worse since the speed bumps were introduced a couple of years back. Not only has the road surface got worse around close to the speed bumps, it has increased noise pollution and building shake when cars and buses slow down to go over the bumps and then speed up again once over em.

Resurface the whole stretch and get rid of speed bumps please.

oh and the junction outside the amersham arms new cross road/ amersham road will need a make shift rope bridge before too long.
Thanks

Jerningham and Sharedeloes.

I noticed some of the holes in Jerningham had been filled in yesterday. We'll I say filled in, but it actually looks like someone dropped a bucket of black tar chips.

That'll last till Saturday then.

Anonymous said...

Shardeloes!!! Its a hazard to everyone. As a cyclist I can't even count the number of times I've got a puncture on that road... it's becoming rather expensive! It isn't even possible to avoid the majority of the pot holes on that road without swerviing into oncoming traffic.

Anonymous said...

It seems its going to be rather a long list.

tod said...

I nominate Harefield because:

-broken pavings
-'bouncy' pavings; whereby you step on one end and the other side shoots up, this caused me to trip up on the way to way to work once.
- uneven tarmac

Plus:
-there's fresh dog mess everyday, plus the residents let the hegdes overgrown, leave their bins out.
-there's a lot of litter outside the chippy

Also because it's a well used road for pedestrians to get to the high street and train station, the Orchard etc and the 484 runs along I'd think it's a priority

All the above makes a hazardous walk because it's also a narrow and steep street

Tresilliam residents,

Who'd ya have to bribe in the council to get a nice shiny new tarmaced road?

Anonymous said...

When do we get to find out what roads the council decides to resurface?

Anonymous said...

TYrwhitt and the top of HF are really bad.

I fear the Tresillian lorries duffed up the Hilly Fields road, ironically enough....

Anonymous said...

Sorry to bump this if already dealt with but did we ever find out which roads were going to be resurfaced? I live on Shardeloes and it's getting worse by the month.
