Fibre-optic broadband coming to Brockley soon (via Deptford and Forest Hill)
BT is rolling out its new fibre optic broadband network 'BT Infinity' to the exchanges which serve Brockley later this year.
On September 30th, it will turn on the service at Deptford, which serves Brockley. From December 31st, it will switch on the network at Forest Hill, which covers those parts of the BC area not covered by the Deptford exchange.
BT says the new cables will deliver download speeds of up to 40mb and upload speeds of 10mb, which means we will be able to abuse eachother at the speed of light. It will also enhance gaming and on-demand service delivery and of course, make life easier for many small businesses and freelance workers in the area, particularly for those currently unable to get Virgin.
Thinkbroadband reports the service will cost "£19.99 a month with a 20GB usage limit (£50 connection fee applies). The unlimited usage variant will cost £24.99 a month, but does save you the £50 connection fee. It also increases the upload speed from 2Mbps to 10Mbps."

This is good news. I recently contacted Virgin to see if they were likely to cable the streets that were missed out all those years ago when Nynex / Cable London etc were busy trashing streets and digging through mains cables. They said 'no, it's too expensive'
I though it was because it is a Conservation Area the cables wasnt installed

To true! I think one of the issues in the conservation area was that digging upv the roads would damage tree roots, but I'm not sure about that, I think I read that on this site somewhere...
Dates for roll out of FTTC (Fibre to the Cabinet) are highly provisional at present.
BC area to the West of the Rail Line is in Inner London and served by New Cross Exchange which is provisionally due for activation at the end of December 2010.
Prices depend on the ISP used and will probably vary.
Conservation areas may not be covered since local amenity socities elsewhere have raised major objections to the size of the street cabinets needed.
The fastest connections currently available over telephone lines are from Be/02 who have their own equipment in the exchange. I get about 12Mbs down and 1Mbs up at the edge of the New Cross Exchange area
Unfortunately, BrockleyNick, you won't be able to abuse anyone 'at the speed of light'- but at the speed at which the manmade process (fibre optic cable?)allows, which is much slower than the speed of light, even outisde a vacuum. If you want to abuse anyone at the speed of light just shine your headlights, or flash. (Though the latter will be a light reflection, half the speed of your headlights, and likely to land you in trouble.

Conservation Area wouldn't allow cables to be laid,then tried to stop Sat Dishes being put up for a while.
I've seen quite blatant use of electricity in the Conservation Area, and horseless carriages parked outside many of the houses - makes you wonder why we bother calling it a 'conservation area' at all.
I think that the Council got a bit tired of the cabling companies indiscriminately chopping through the roots of road/path side trees during the last cabling splurge.
I'd guess BT will do FTTC rather than FTTH, so the last 100 metres or so will be on the old copper cables laid ages ago.
Just as the fact that you have 22 feet of intestines inside your carcass means that the food that reaches your stomach is never really fresh. So, too with optical fibres. They only reach the green cabinet and the rest of the disance will be by copper cables, a much less efficient medium.
This means that should one wish to indulge in the most recent Internet craze du jour: chatroulette. Co-participants may yet find themselves short changed in their appreciation of your video stream, by our old friend: attenuated bandwidth.

I'm with Lorna! We were shocked at how crappy our internet speeds were when we moved to Brockley, one of the (very) few downsides of moving here... bring it on!
I think the cable laying companies after many complaints,having to go under the roots,that's when it got to expensive.
Anyone have the cable service yet?
I have Virgin media which is at best disappointing when it comes to broadband speed. Does anyone on the Westside, or non-CA East, use Virgin and have a similar problem?
Bad news I'm afraid.
The BT map for rollout (http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=29017&s_cid=con_FURL_infinity#fiberMapConsumer) changed the date for the Deptford exchange to 31 December 2010 a few weeks ago. I've just checked again, and it's been moved to a rollout date of 30 September 2012. Yes, that's 2012.
It's ridiculous. But I can't see what can be done about it. I'm thinking about moving from BT in a tiny gesture of defiance.
I live in Ladywell and our local exchange is Rushey Green, March 2011 then although this might change.
In reference to Virginmedia, I have not had a good time with them. Bad Service and poor speed.
For what it's worth my broadband got much faster when I switched to o2 broadband, despite bt's insistence that it would be the same or worse. Cheaper too if you have a mob with o2. Could still be faster though.

The BT website suggests that my postcode at the Tea Factory (Brockley Cross) is on the Deptford exchange and says that will be up on 30th September 2012!
I am currently on O2 and get a good service but would like to stream HD movies asap...
I note that Catford and New Cross seem to be scheduled for New Year's eve!
