Mass Observation Brockley

Larry Gopnik: The Uncertainty Principle. It proves we can't ever really know... what's going on. So it shouldn't bother you. Not being able to figure anything out. Although you will be responsible for this on the mid-term.
- A Serious Man

Brockley Central readers have been asked to participate in a Mass Observation project led by an organisation called MOCO. They'd like us all to take part in a project which records a moment in time in Brockley life in as much detail as possible.

They've suggested four ways we could take part - completing a questionnaire, photograph a street, keep a diary for a day or observe life in a cafe. The last of these would certainly be conforming to type, but we reckon the photography project would be the most interesting and we could hopefully rely on the support of the local Flickr group, if nothing else. We can choose which of these we'd like to do or suggest our own variant.

We'd like to ask you whether you're interested in being involved and - if so - which form of mass observation you think would be most interesting. If we can arrive at some form of consensus, Brockley Central will ask MOCO to set us up as one of the participating communities and off we go.

Agree that the photos would be best.

I had no idea this went back so far, click on the link and have a browse. I like this from nineteen twenty something...

“I have to keep pretty smart and I get a certain amount of satisfaction in appearing better dressed than most of the others.”

“I have reached a good position by hard work, while most of them seem content to stick in the same old groove.”

Also lots of petty whinges about the neighbours, lighting bonfires and playing the radio too loud. Ah! The good old days. Much like now except, erm, older.

Sounds like Hugh senior.

We have a few 'mass-observation' events coming up!

Is there anyone out there with the facilities to shoot pictures or take film?

Brockley Dogging Society, some may find you distasteful, but you just made me ROTFL, etc. Keep it up.

This was their funniest moment for me:

The fox debate rages within the BDS. Some find the passionate shreaks of the foxes union enhance the evening, indeed there is a campaign to make the fox the official logo. Others find that they sit and watch, their beady unblinking eyes can put one off their stroke.

I've seen some things that would make a fox blink.

To the 'real' BDS. You and your followers know full whell why you were expelled. Colin is still very anoyed, we may be old fasioned but queuing is the only thing turning an evenings dogging into an unseamly tangle of limbs. Not everyone is as young as you, consideration costs nothing you know. I bet your the kind of guy who grabs all the crispy duck at a chineese banquet, leaving the tofu for those less assertive.

We will play no part in this.

Unless offered uniforms.
