Blackheath, Honor Oak and Forest Hill make burglary top 20

Two areas of Lewisham have made a list of the top 20 parts of the country where homeowners are most likely to claim for theft on their home insurance. Blackheath and Forest Hill / Honor Oak were the local postcodes that made a list dominated by London locations.

The data comes from Moneysupermarket.com's database of 1.1m enquiries in 2009.

With thanks to Monkeyboy for the story.

Moneysupermarket.com have once again proved that they don't understand how to compiile useful statistics, by placing Forest Hill in the top 20 'home theft' hotspots.

They base their statistics on home insurance enquiries rather than actual crimes. They take no account of; how likely you are to have an Internet connection and therefore accessing their site, whether people are coming to their site because of rocketing premiums due to past claims (which might explain how one in 12 homes have been robbed in the last year), which ITV regions they target with their adverts, the honesty of people telling them about previous thefts, etc

Nor do they make any attempt to explain why the top four 'crime hotspots' in last years survey have completely dropped out of their ranking this year.

Don't believe them when they tell you Forest Hill is a 'theft hotspot', it is simply not true and is just a cheap marketing gimmick to get their company name in lots of papers as if they are experts on crime figures.

I live in crofton park smack bang between Brockley and HOP but I used to get the train from HOP as it was a quicker/nicer walk.

I've got to say I have always felt nothing but safe and secure in the area I live so the story did sound a little suspect...

Michael's comments make alot of sense. The results will no doubt be squewed by the demographic of folk who obtain insurance quotes using thier particular website... and by the absence of stats from those that don't:

All of the unlucky folk who have been burgled and dont have insurance are immediately omitted from the stats.

@Michael - sure, I don't think many people are credulous enough to think this is a definitive study like the national crime survey. However, it's probably a useful indicator, particularly across London, where brand awareness and internet connection rates are fairly uniform. I don't understand the point about rocketing premiums.

@CPR - burglary rates have little to do with how you feel on a walk home.

But yes, a talking point to be taken with a massive pinch of salt.

@Nick - @NewForester on SE23.com points out that:
A quick look at the Met's crime statistics for the last year shows that with 109 burglaries, Forest Hill was 222th= most likely ward to be burgled in London, let alone the country...

This survey should not just be taken with a pinch of salt but sent to the salt mines for hard labour. As a talking point it is a slur on the good name of Forest Hill and they make no attempt to explain that their statistics do not represent anything like the true picture of crime.

Fair point. Although perhaps some of the discrepancy might come down to the difference between the ward and postcode boundaries? Brockley ward and Brockley postcode are very different places, with very different crime levels, for example.

Still, your underlying point is no-doubt right - official crime stats are the ones we should pay attention to.

Personally I don't think it's much more valid then a face creme claiming to be 30% better at reducing fine lines. Maybe blackheath residents have better stuff to nick? Personaly I don't thieve anywhere else..

All of the price comparison websites come up with endlessly dodgy surveys just to get their name out there.

Perhaps Michael works for uSwitch and is gutted he didn't think of this one ....

And does Forest Hill even have a good name? It's largely a dump.

michael said...

@Lou Baker of course I don't work for any competitor of Moneysupermarket.com but I do live in Forest Hill (which as everybody knows is not a dump or a crime hotspot).

@Nick crime is generally even lower in the parts of SE23 not in Forest Hill Ward (Perry Vale and Crofton Park) as they as not so close to a district town centre.

@Michael - well then, the good name of Forest Hill has truly been besmirched and I apologise for my role in it.

And please ignore Lou, he doesn't like anywhere very much, except the Kings Road.

Ah, Lou. Your somewhat robust opinions continually fall flat. Keep taking the pills.

Lou's obsession with the Kings Road can mean only two things. Either he has a red mohican and poses as a punk for pictures with American tourists, or he's an Italian student.
Which is it Lou?

I went to the Kings Road once. It's a dump.

We live on Adelaide Avenue and got burgled twice in May!! Same people but still!! We now have a very loud alarm!

I like lots of places - including some in London . Even the King's Road is okay.

But most of the area around here is a bit rubbish - New Cross, Lewisham, Catford. Varying degrees of crapness but still all crap.

No offence meant to anyone who lives here but let's admit it most of us would prefer to be in Dulwich or Blackheath but end up in Brockley because it's cheaper.

I really hope new cross turns into the next shoreditch/hackney just to annoy Lou even more. I'm in the process of getting the funds together to open a vintage clothes shop here so I'm determined to make it happen.

Shoreditch is next door to the City. NXG is next door to, well, NX.

@ Lou... just been amused by your comments re: burglary...
We do not end up in Brockley cos its cheaper!!
You might... have you seen some of the property prices currently? quite silly to be honest but... I grew up in Blackheath... Brockley has far more soul and character and property prices show!
If you think its "crap" - find somewhere else to live... then you'll happier I hope.
Notting Hill is nice but so lacking!
@ Nxg well done! I hope that all goes well with vintage clothing... I am sure that it will... you have the right clients around and about!Good luck!!!
