Pub quiz, hotshot

Brockley Central regular TM does not let any detail of local pub culture escape him. He reports that The Talbot has entered the fiercely competitive Tuesday pub quiz market:

From next Tuesday (14th Sept) the Talbot is running a quiz which will be in direct competition to both the Wickham Arms and the Ladywell Tavern who also run quizzes on Tuesdays.
Not sure who will come out best, but a battle of the pub quiz nights is sure to ensue.

Clearly an act of war on the Wickham's legendary quiz!

...or maybe they just wanted to ensure that the Jolly Jellyfish wouldn't win every week.

Last time I went to the Wickham for the quizz it was rammed to the gills with professional pub quiz teams so amateurs like myself and me mates didn't stand a chance. It'll be nice to have another option and will perhaps mean there's a bit more space to move in the Wickham on Tue nights...

HH you will have the privilege of paying £2 at The Talbot to be beaten.

That's true and the Wickham used to (still does??) hand round delicately sliced egg and cress sandwiches for free which I always thought was a lovely touch... Now if only they could stop the entire pub smelling like the gents bogs.

Controversial. The Princess of Wales in Blackheath also runs a good quiz on Tuesdays. Why all on Tuesdays?

It is true that the entrance fee is more at the Talbot but then the prizes are larger rather than Larger.

As an aside none of the Wickham teams are "professional" just the usual run of the mill amateurs. Most do have the wisdom of age on their (our) side.

And the Jolly Jellyfish were beaten this week by Friends Disunited.

Dylans in Lewisham also run a quiz on Tuesdays.

I hope the Jolly Jellyfish, Cheating Bastards and the rest go to the new quiz to give us all a fair chance! I have vague memories of my friends winning the Wickham Quiz but that was about five years ago (and they might have come second)

No chance of the Jellyfish paying £2.

TM - How are you so sure that the teams at the Wickham aren't "professional"? Do you know them all? Last time I was there, there were probably nearly 20 teams...

HH

Because for the last 12 months or so; three teams have dominated the Wickham quiz.

I am in one of the teams and yes I do know all the memberss of the other two.

Professional? Like teams of sponsored boffins? Or do you mean groups of chums that enjoy quizzing and have regular team. People who know more stuff than you? How would you police it? A pre quizz?

What time does it start?

TM said...

Talbot 8pm
Ladywell 8.30pm
Wickham 9.30pm

The number of teams at the Wickham is down to an average of 8 but the sandwiches survive.

I think it would be possible to tour each pub using a moped, doing a round of questions and onto the next in a circuit. There's a challenge.

HH's assertion that his opponents must have been "professional" rather than just better than his team has amused me.

My own team wins occasionally, but seems to come second an awful lot.

I'm not sure the Wickham Quiz is going to survive much longer though - especially with fierce competition. I'm not sure the current landlord has his heart in providing entertainment for the local quiz geeks.

True Robert, but I don't think he will stop it as there will be no one in there if he does.

Is there an overview of all the local pub quiz nights anywhere, actually, for all nights of the week? Not being lazy (well, OK, I am), just thought it might have come up in a previous post/comments thread here, but can't seem to find anything. Would be a useful wee resource!

Kind of feel a bit sad for the Wickham, having defected from there to the Talbot, but good beer is important to me and they kept on bringing the prizes down to nothing. Love the Wickham bar staff and really miss the sandwiches, but happy winning money at the Talbot, it was a group decision, and we're definitely not professional, just obsessive and experienced. A cheating b**rd. The name is a bit antagonitic, but it was a taunt to others who did cheat when we played down at Skeehans many years ago.

Isn't it an amalgamation of 3 teams now ? CB, Two Beers, and James from the Jelly Fish.

Anonymous said...

And i did see a cb using the phone at half time, and overheard them asking for an answer.

Anonymous said...

I quite like the smell in the Wickham. It's good, and honest.

I've long suspected that the CB's name was a double bluff.

In any case their star seems to be on the wane as they were well down table last Tuesday when in an unprecedented developement three teams were tied in first place.

Honours in the end went to a raucous outfit called 'big' something or other.

Is that bald guy nuts?

Hard to say. Which bald guy?
