Best local newcomer 2010

NASA expert: "Gentlemen, you've both worked very hard. And in a way, you're both winners. But in another, more accurate way, Barney's the winner."
- The Simpsons

Time again for the Oscars of the retail world - the Brockley Central Best Local Newcomer award.

Last year, The Orchard was voted best local newcomer by Brockley Central readers, an accolade which has no-doubt proved vital to their ongoing success in 2010, making it the award every business wants to win.

This year, there are five contenders: The Hill Station cafe and community centre in Telegraph Hill, El's Kitchen deli in Ladywell, Bohemia Hair salon near Brockley station and U Gosi Polish shop and Krizz Kutz barbers, both in Crofton Park.

The 2010 winner will be selected via the poll on the right hand side of this page - one reader, one vote. The vote closes on Christmas eve.

So who will it be?

PS - although there have been a number of other great newcomers in areas of BC interest - such as Deptford, New Cross and Nunhead - in order to keep the vote manageable, we are limiting the vote to newcomers from the Brockley, Crofton Park, Ladywell and Telegraph Hill wards.

Compared to last year (Orchard, Mess, etc) it's a bit thin on the ground this year.

I agree. And some haven't really been open long enough to judge.

The red La Lanterna is certainly the winner. The hotel seems occupied by a one guest only, while the restaurant is on its way, turtle way!

And especially if we have to include businesses in New cross...

I have excluded businesses in New Cross? Telegraph Hill ward covers West Brockley. The Hill Station is considerably closer than The Telegraph, which was in last year's poll.

I thought U Gosi was a Polish shop? I might pop by later to pick up some Brasso.

Now capitalised. But I hear they do a lovely Polish polish, which you simply can't get anywhere else.

Bohemia Hair has to win by a long shot - I've re-booked my second apppointment for tomorrow, really looking forward to it!

I want to go to U Gosi and ask for some Polish.

Hill Station has really come on leaps and bounds since it opened. I recommend everyone to pay a visit, even if you went in the first month or two. Initially is was a bit sparse but it's a proper cafe now and the food is excellent.

Can you tell me how the boundaries of West Brockley are distinguished? (other than in your fantasy that is Nick)

Brockley Nick said...

Since there is no official area as West Brockley, there are no official boundaries, so you'll have to live within my fantasy world, which is much nicer than the real one anyway.

There was a reasonable degree of consensus around this map http://bit.ly/cnOkRE

The Northern border of West Brockley lies somewhere between Besson and Pomeroy Streets I believe.

Will the new Sainsburys be on the list next year ?.

Brockley Nick said...

They would be happier if that was so.

That was aimed at Danja, btw

Reminiscent of the mid 90's rapper feuds, it looks like it will be a battle between East & Westside establishments.

@DD - in that case, the good ones got killed and the useless P Diddy capitalised - let's hope that doesn't happen here.

Can I vote for the orange cherry picker that's permanently parked on the estate on Brockley Road? Always there, grass growing around it, all paid for by us (via Lewisham Council and its dodgy PFI deal). A landmark addition to the neighbourhood.

I haven't been to any of these as they are outside the Tyrwhitt sphere of influence.

Perhaps something nice and new for next years vote will open on the corner of Tyrwhitt Road and Loampit Hill after the building is auctioned off.....or not.

Still waiting for a new tenant for the chemist which moved into the Health Centre.

Brockley Nick said...

@TM - you are like an aircraft carrier that projects influence way beyond your borders. At least as far as The Wickham.

Maybe we could put some Christmas lights on the Cherry Picker.

drakefell debaser said...

Perhaps if TM had planes his influence would stretch as far as The Montague Arms.

Since the Talbot reopened my influence has waned and like the Ark Royal my Harriers have been de-commissioned.

To prove I do still venture abroad sometimes, I can recommend a Christmas comedy entitled Seasons Greetings which I saw last night at the National Theatre.

Outside Brockley I know but still on the South Bank!

Brockley Nick said...

Only ever seen Seasons Greeting on telly, but I love it.

I afraid both the play and the venue are a bit long in the tooth to feature on a best newcomer thread.

Only been to Els but very impressed.... Gets my vote

Yes, the Hill Station is great - really good-quality food that is as good as the evening Toad's Mouth used to be at its best (haven't been in a while so hope it still is!)

El's Kitchen has my vote - it's transformed my shopping options in Ladywell!

should brockley cross going into Malpas road just be a one way road?

Such solution would allow for a much more extended pedestrian pavement and less traffic moving into a single roundabout.

Anonymous said...

There's only one way round a Roundabout.

Bohemia gets my vote. Bit of glamour in Brockley is a good thing in my book! Lovely friendly staff. Local owners who really seem to care about the area too. Hill station my second favourite. Great coffee!

Bohemia - avoid if you are after highlights. Nice people, but give Bohemia hair salon in mantle road a wide berth unless you want a well defined one centimeter regrowth already in place when you leave the salon. I have just spent another £90 having it corrected at my normal salon.

I had highlights at Bohemia and they did a great job - nice cut too. I've been back again. I always ask for Matt.
