Deptford's Market Square project underway

Deptford Dame reports that work to redevelop Douglas Way and create a new market square has begun.

According to Lewisham Council:

The improvements will consist of new paving, new lighting, the introduction of some trees and seating and new electrical in ground supply for the market stall traders and will connect cyclists and pedestrians to the new forthcoming Deptford station, Deptford Lounge, shops and markets and other unique qualities that Deptford has to offer.

As we wrote in our review of 2010, over the last year, the Council has managed to push through a number of good projects in the area, for which they deserve credit. But equally significant environmental improvements could be achieved, at a fraction of the cost of capital expenditure projects, by strengthening planning enforcement, sanitation and parking controls. Exhibit A: the vans of Brockley Cross.
