Brockley loses the internet
None of you will be able to read this, but the News Shopper reports that the problems many of you are having connecting to the internet are the result of severed cables in Deptford, which may take until the 28th to repair fully.
However, Brockley Central can report that the internet connection in its Paris hotel is working just fine - so well in fact that we were up in our room blogging about stupid maps while the rest of our group was ogling Kate Moss, who was staying here last night. Heed this lesson well: use the down time to go outside and spot super models on Brockley Road.

I have access, so not all is lost. Enjoy Paris !
No super models on Brockley Road this evening during the five mins I strolled along it but I do have the internet - so no all is lost.
Bea
Oops - using the same phrase as Marc there.
Had a brief problem connecting yesterday but fine so far today!
Bea
Supermodels? Do you mean the barmaids in the Wickham?
I'm struggling with a dodgy 3G connection. Deeply annoying.
I heard someone chewed through an enormous pipeline. Lucky devils - we will send someone down with a drill and hard helmet ASAP to investigate.
Nick, Nick, Nick - '. . . fully to repair' I think you mean? Let's maintain blog standards, eh.
Kate likes it when I'm grammatically loose, says it shows I have the soul of a poet
The company I work for on Brockley road has lost internet connection since tuesday... We were told Friday we were expected to be fixed by... Its really hurting us for target!
Am sure Ms Moss was disappointed, having hung around waiting for nick to emerge....
Go Wireless.
It came back last night - hurrah!
Not for me it didn't. I may have the contractor, who put his JCB through the cable, killed.
It was still down in Crofton Park this morning. Although the row of shops with Jam Circus in still has internet, so you can go and use their wireless. Incidentally I wonder if the price of a pint in there will have gone up by 4p as per the budget, or if they'll conveniently round it up to the nearest 5p?
Still down in Cranfield Road too this morning...
I waited internet for 2 months, it has been working for 3 days and now ...
I'm really unlucky...
Still not working in Tyrwhitt Road this morning.....
I am appear to be in a very strange position, as whilst mine has been temperamental, it has been working, but friends done the road and round the corner have had neither phone nor broadband since Tuesday!
You can only claim a rebate if it takes more than 3 days to repair.
What happened the upgrade that was meant to happen to the Deptford and New Cross exchanges towards the end of last year??
Still not working this morning on Tressillian Rd (or at least my bit of it). V painful calling BT. They have promised to call us (on mobile) tomorrow morning after they have 'investigated the line'.
@ Anon 12:28 - not happened yet. BT site claims 5.5mb speeds for Crofton Park, though I'm lucky to get 2mb most of the time.
Yes, they keep trotting out the same standard response. I asked them if there was a problem in the area or was it just my line. It took the investagative brilliance of the News Shopper to discover the real problem. I know that getting a detailed, accurate, response will not speed up the reolution but at least it would show thay have a grip of the situation.
I seem to get 13mb (when it was working!) so actually quiet happy. I'm not far from Deptford exchange though. Think the "Infinity" upgrade of "fibre to the cabinet" (the green boxes on the foot path) was defered for Deptford.
Is it only affecting the East? My own (slower than advertised complete with complimentary poor customer service) Virgin service is all tickety-boo.
@mb - I think 'Infinity' refers to BT's lead time.
Spoke to a fairly helpful for BT woman in Bangalore yesterday who said it was a known problem affecting quite a few lines in the area. She did say that they'd keep me informed by text. So far they've sent me one text stating that if the problem is with my own equipment I'll have to pay £130.
@drakefell d
If you're on virgin cable then you're independent of the BT phone lines. Lucky you! No virgin cable down my road.
@ DD - I think you're on a different exchange / circuit on that side of the tracks.
BT offered me a free printer and some other trivia to switch and I forgot to get back to them. I might wait until your all back up and running.
Tommo, Virgin is overrated. I should have guessed something was up when the chap who came to install it whacked his head on a shelving unit, which caused several heavy-ish objects to fall on him, got arsey with me for having a shelf above the spot where I wanted the connection to be placed.
It's been down hill since.
I live on St Margarets Rd and I lost both internet connection AND landline for approximately 24 hours between early pm Tuesday and early pm Wednesday. A neighbour a few doors away had the same problem but we're not yet aware of it affecting anyone else on the road. Strangely, the business landline I have at home (also BT) was unaffected.
So, someone "deleted" the internet did they? That was probably me, when I was emptying my recycle bin ;)
On a more serious note, I haven't experienced any problems with the internet. Well, when i say that, I use Orange, which is an abysmal service. Still, at least they don't use "phorm" or anything to spy on my like BT does.
Also my line speed appears to be getting slower. 3 years ago, i achieved around 6.4Mbs per second. Now it's around 4.8. Whats is everyone elses' average speed?
*** Additional ***
I forgot to mention that http://www.speedtest.net/ is an excellent tool fr testing internet speeds. Also if we all use the same method for testing, we can better compare results.
OK, well I've just used that and it said I was getting just under 4 Mbps - half the average speed for London according to them, and less than half the average for my ISP, which is fast.co.uk.
What speed do others get?
Fernando is trying to give up the speed. it was affecting his performance.
Mine gives 9.75 Mbps down and 1.03 Mbps up. I'm with Virgin.
I guess it would also be useful to know roughly where in Brockley people are so we can see how much difference distance from the exchange makes, as well as ISP.
St Margarets Rd
3.97 down
0.23 up
ISP: fast.co.uk (via BT wires).
I'm in SE13 on the Hither Green/Rushey Green border not far from Lewisham Hospital.
Breakspears Rd down since Tuesday. The lovely BT lady from Bangalore advised last night we'll have our line & broadband back in 2-3 days. Office at BX currently running at a pathetic & intermittent 1-2.5 megs. An equally nice man from Madras says our provider; XLN are sending us a diagnostic test router. I hope they throw in some poppadoms & mango chutney. I'm starving!
Apparently the phone is back on in Crofton Park but no internet access just yet...
down:4.40M
up :0.28M
Loc: St Maggie's Sq
ISP: Bethere
That's a 30% speed loss in a year. Hmm.
@ drakefell
Lol. Reminds me of the time I had sky installed. Judging from the bloke's aroma he'd come straight from a dope-smoking contest!
Sorry to widen the net ... have a friend in Deal in Kent reporting very sluggish internet from Virgin over the last day or two ...
Update (posted from my mobile). Phone is back on in Crofton Park but we've got a crossed line and the wrong number! Naturally broadband not working. BT said this will be a common problem, and take a few more days to fix. In the meantime people with strange accents keep calling and asking for Maria (none sound like Andrew Lloyd Webber though)
I challenge anyone to read this whole thread without their eyes glazing over.
Also is this related to the cash machines all being broken?
Back online on Cranfield Rd, but I had to call Sky...
Still fuked for me. Anyone know how the cable got cut?it would be just TOO perfect if it was Conways.
3G is keeping be going.
East Dulwich had lines down for a few days last week. The lines had been cut when idiots had tried to steel the cable. Maybe the same people?
http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,634923,page=1
I can't believe I pay for this internet!
Down - 1.31mbps
Up - 0.62Mbps
I'm Adelaide Avenue.
ISP - Sky
@ Mb - BT said suspected copper cable theft or vandalism. Must be the former, it's becoming a major problem and is one of the reasons the DLR extension to Stratford International has been delayed.
I got used to seeing bare telephone poles in Zimbabwe but never thought copper wire theft would be an issue here.
My speed with Virgin is:
9.03 Mpbs download
0.99 Mpbs upload
So, compared to you lot, Virgin is supersonic when it comes to download speeds, and maybe I should stop whinging.
I'm with BT internet.
How do you work out your internet speed? Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.
RE: net being down, my partner reported problem to BT on Tuesday afternoon. They said they hope to fix by Friday although they said if it was not their fault they'd charge me £130.
Naturally we weren't impressed. But to be fair to BT they did redirect incoming landline calls to my mobile (free of charge) and they actually fixed yesterday.
anyone got updates on this?? called BT today and they're 'looking into it' with the up to 3 days thing...
no phone line or bb connect and they THINK it's the local exchange.
phone line back on in sharedloes
did no one else read the new shopper page ?
tea leaves stole a load of copper wire form lucas street in deptford
It just says cables cut, nothing about theft? although apparently it's not unknown to steal cable from ducts as well as exposed cables. Hardly seems worth the bother, may as well get a proper job.
BT internet connection and landline still not working on Harefield Road Fri pm
Back online in malpas, or at least my line is.
Apparently it's about 8.5mb at the mo. Often get up to 13mb, hopefully will be firing on all cylinders soon.
shardeloes was back up and running on Wednesday
Upper Brockley Rd still well and truly buggered... Getting quite angry now! Bearing in mind the number of homes and businesses affected, how can BT not mend this in five days?!
Phone and interweb still down at Hilly Fields end of Tyrwhitt. Virgin support sometimes don't think it anything to do with the exchange, and sometimes do.
Has anyone alerted a Green councillor?
live on shards
using speedtest.net
download 12.85mbps
upload 0.93 mbps
isp: bt
It's expensive though, what with line rental. I'm tempted by sky but would rather not give any money to murdoch if I can help it but sky atlantic is tempting me. Does anyone use Sky and have views on them? Cost/ service etc?
Finally, back on (Sunday evening). Don't forget to apply for compensation if you were without connection for more than 72 hours.
It was cable theft; the same thing happened in Dulwich a few weeks ago.
Upper Brockley Rd back! At least this proves engineers were still working over the weekend... Over 5 days without phone/internet is frighteningly awful.
My house on Braxfield Road was unaffected. But then again, I have 3 BT engineers living next door to me so I expect nothing less than a good connection ;)
My internet's been running the whole time. Seems to have cut out very inconsistently because my upstairs neighbour (in teh same building) said that his had cut out and came down to ask if mine was working. I don't use BT - my landline, internet, mobile etc are all with Orange. Don't know if that makes a difference
@Hh I have 2 BT lines within the same house and one was affected, the other not. Someone at BT told me that every 3rd or 4th house might be affected. Dunno why.
This is a really good read for me. Must agree that you are one of the coolest blogger I ever saw. Thanks for posting this useful information. This was just what I was on looking for.
