More good stuff on Brockley Road

The kerb just outside Pinnacle estate agents, on the corner of Cranfield and Brockley Roads is being built out as the next stage of the redevelopment of the Brockley Road pavement.

So far, the build job appears to be high-quality and has already made a big different to the look and feel of the street, despite the builders' bric-a-brac still lying around. The street feels less like a rat run for drivers and more like a place for shoppers.

This particular bit of work is a really welcome bit of design thinking, since it should make this kind of dangerous parking (the background rather than the foreground) much more difficult. Having said that, no-one ever went broke overestimating the laziness and ingenuity of Brockley's illegal parkers.

Yes that work is coming on well, the narrowing of the crossing will help pedestrian flow too.

As a regular cyclist I've come to the conclusion that Brockley Road southbound could do with a stretch of cycle lane from the zebra crossing up to the doorstep bakery. I ride home that way most evenings and am frequently pushed into the kerb by cars and vans cutting the corner too tightly. A cycle lane would offer a bit of protection and remind motorists to keep their distance.

Definitely a welcome improvement to the look of the area.
Though I think they'll need to repaint the road marking to allow a little extra space on that side of the road, it's currently a bit of a squeeze for cyclists.

Proves that Conways are capable of doing a decent job. Presumably not the same crew who built the Station entrance.

Did you see that road in Japan that was reconstructed in 6 days, lets see how long this takes.

Except it does mean that now any car trying to turn right into the road behind the Barge brings all the traffic behind it to a grinding halt.

So maybe not so clever after all.

Any chance we can stop using weasel words like "rat run"? They're really not necessary.

No.

Haha.

So do we think with BX and BR getting sorted they will ingore Coulgate Street?

Rat-running is a *real* issue locally (weasel words or not) ... by this I don't mean people using the roads to get home in a considerate, law-abiding fashion ... I mean commuters, as a matter of course, speeding and driving with mindless and dangerous aggression down residential streets ... I have young children and it's galling and scary.

Anyway, Anon, what's the problem with rats when weasels are OK?

If you live on the opposite end of the roads does that make you a rat-runner?

Surely the roads are there to be used, not to make pious claims of ownership and mungery over.

Brockley Nick said...

My lord anon, you are overreacting. I didn't say it was a rat run, I said it feels less like one. That was a reference to the fact that rat-runs are roads meant for people that get inappropriately used for cars. I know Brockley Road is a main road, but it was a simile.

And if you are going to complain about piety, you're best avoiding using terms like "weasel words" which are the last refuge of the pompous.

Are they only doing one side or will they be tackling both?

Brockley Nick said...

Only one side - click on "redevelopment" in the article for more details.

When that car lot over the road is redeveloped then you know Brockley is regenerating...

The car lot only needs "redeveloping" if you're a vegetarian. Otherwise it's doing what it's meant to do, selling cars.

I may, of course, be wrong, but I think there may be some vegetarians who own cars. I know that not all omnivores own cars, because I don't.

The car lot/MOT testing centres seem to me to be useful businesses generating employment as well as providing an essential service to local residents.

I finally used the MOT place on Saturday and was most impressed with the service. Although it is something of an eyesore it is undoubtedly a valuable local business.
