Unleash the beast

When Kate wrote to us asking for help to find would-be bridge players in Brockley, she confessed that she had already tried advertising on Gumtree, without success. We overlooked this indiscretion, for Brockley Central is a forgiving blog.

We're happy to report that we've now found four people to play with her and her housemate.

In 2005, Gumtree was sold to Ebay for "an undisclosed sum" and is now the UK's largest community classifieds site. Yet, in SE4 it kneels before Brockley Central. At least when it comes to card games.

If you're looking to connect with people in the area, get in touch - bring the rain.

Thanks BC! I bow before you too... and would you mind keeping the gumtree info hush? All street cred will be lost.

Has anyone ever considered a general "meeting new people in the local area" event - just drinks or coffee or similar? I know I'd love to find some local friends but tend to assume everyone else already has their local connections.

There have been the occasional Brockley central drinks night and the occasional tweetup organised by the Brockley people on twitter.

I have made several friends from Brockley Central over the years.

I really like that idea, difficult to meet people locally.

Perhaps difficult to go to something without some commonality of purpose. Although there are all sorts of exercise and interest groups one can slot into. The sessions at the BXAG working on the area by the station seem to be very social. How far are you into Brockley? There's a series of Thursday talks and discussion starting up in the Hill Station this evening. Details in the latest Bold Vision newsletter link from this webpage. Seems most apposite "Does Protest Work?".

Why waste time with coffee and quiz nights. If you really want to 'meet' people just attend on the first wednesday of every month for our 'speed-dogging' event. You get five minutes, Colin blows a Kazzoo and everyone changes. Only one rule, everyone dogs with everyone! If you can't manage five minutes, fernando (our semi professional dogger from Madrid) will step in.

Rats, hate it when you do a post - carefully putting in a link and all and then mess up with submitting it.

So, second time around.

Sometimes difficult to meet up at events - the Brockley Central drinks excepted - especially for meeting people, some commonality of interest is useful. Many such events, quiz nights, exercise classes etc. around - and the music contacts started on the other thread (Ian's appeal for fellow guitarists). The BXAG working parties on the area by the station also seem extremely social.

Also there is just starting up in the Hill Station a series of 1st Thursday in the month talks/debates. Details in the Bold Vision newsletter that can be linked to through this webpage. The first one on whether protest works - most apposite with the other recent threads - is in fact tonight.

Does Brockley Max have a dogging event in its programme?

If only you'd set Brockley Central up as a proper wesbite rather than on Blogger, you could have sold it off and become internet millionaires!

BDS - Everyone dogs everyone else? Do Colin and Fernando dog each other? Are you an equal opportunities dogging society?

I acordance with Dogging Discrimination legislation, we are duty bound to make reasonable adjustments to maximise participation. We have a selection of ramps, bars, foot stools and a specially prepared run up area for those who need some momentum.

I have missed the three or four BC drinks so far but would like to attend if another one was announced...

Headhunter, Fernando and I usually meet up on the 3rd Thursday of the month. If you would like to join us then please get in touch via the normal channels.

Needless to say our offer only applies if you are in fact hunting for head, as your name suggests.

Looking again at the Bold Vision website (which incidentally does not link to the Hill website or post it's events there...). I see there is also this:

"We will gather 30-35 people to gather in the Hill Station 7-9pm on Mar 18th.

The point of the evening is to bring together people who might not otherwise have met, for a meaningful discussion. We will serve simple fare (soup, bread, cheese, fruit) to sustain them while they talk.

The theme? Creating a Community of Difference
The demographic classification of SE4 and SE14 is “Bohemian Melting Pot” and it is unusual in the UK in terms of openmindedness and cultural / age / class diversity. However shyness, uncertainty and different lifestyles conspire against us actually enjoying each others differences – we often gravitate towards those most like ourselves, not from prejudice but just because that is what happens most naturally. We want this supper to be part of making it easier for us to share some of the astonishing wealth of skills, knowledge and wisdom in our area.

If you would like to be part of this supper, or would like to nominate somebody who you think would enjoy it, please drop Catherine Shovelin a quick email with a couple of lines of background. We will get back to you as soon as we can.

The people at this first event do not need any special skills, education or status in society. It is not in any way a test or a trial. We are very interested in having as wide a range of people participate as possible. The only requirement is an open mind and being prepared to talk to a stranger."

NB - "talking" not "dogging"...

What is the SI unit for openmindedness? Isn't it usually used to describe people who agree with you?

I've always thought of it as the capacity for abstract thought and balanced argument but it is more often associated with reactionary polemicism.

Take a tool (I believe this to be the correct vernacular street slang) if you're leaving The Barge late at night though...

We met our neighbours within days of moving in because virtually the first thing through the letter box was a planning application (pre Conservation Area days) for a four storey block of flats yards from our back fence!

A child and/or a dog can join a pint of beer as useful accessories if you want to be sociable.
