Fire at Brockley Cross launderette

Fire engines are currently on the scene at Brockley Cross, where a portacabin behind a launderette has caught fire. On Southeastcentral.co.uk Brockley Ben reports that Mantle Road, Endwell Road and Brockley Cross have been temporarily closed to traffic.

Popped out again half an hour ago. The one-way bit of Endwell Road is open as long as you turn right up Drakefell at the end.

It was the remaining porta-cabin just behind the launderette that was on fire.

I have added some photos to the Brockley flickr pool.

I wonder if anyone is playing Morrissey's "Hairdresser on Fire" in a pomo ironic manner.

If it's that side of the tracks, would the fire have caused £50 of improvements?

Let's hope no-one was hurt, eh!

All back to normal now. I understand they were breaking down a few old boilers in the cabin around the back and someone got careless. The portacabin looks a bit charred but the rest of the building seems OK.

It was a fairly spectacular pall of dark smoke, though. And quite fun - the evening rush-hour traffic coming down Drakefell and having to do a three point turn at the corner with Endwell until people twigged what was happening and started turning left up Sprules in time. A nice exercise in fluid co-operation.

It is fortunate that they had already removed the porta cabin that was on top of the one that caught fire as the flames from both would have engulfed the laundrette.

Tamsin, glad you had fun, I was touching cloth coming down Drakefell becuase the smoke seemed to indicate that it was my house on fire.

The police let me walk into the dry cleaners to collect my shirts around 19:15. There was a fair bit of smoke inside as a window had been open. a fireman quickly came after me and gave me the option of grabbing my shirts (there was of course no-one else inside). I thought I had better return when I could pay! I hope my shirts aren't all stinky.

The thick smoke came in to my bedroom window at night and gave me black bogeys
