Gulen's has got a new look. The kebab shop-and-nightclub empire has forked out for a new sign. And here it is.

I have indulged in an occasional shish from Gulens, I like to keep myself grounded by mixing with the prolatariate. I'm good like that. A better kebab than Tony's Plaice I can state with confidence.
There is a door into the 'wine bar', it's occasionally open and i can confirm they have a telly.
Nightclub? Is there a secret Brockley club that I don't know about?

Surely the S is meant to be the other way up?
Is this parade in the Conservation Area?
It is hardly C A guidance compliant.
I suppose the Betjamin brigade of the BlockSoc will be up in arms over the sign...cue ruffled feathers of those with nothing better to think about... stifles yawn. They do a pretty good shish at their kebab shop.
What? I don't get it. Was that/will it be a nightclub or just a double kebab shop?
It's a nightclub and has been for a long time.
The doner meat is quite nice and I've popped in there for the odd burger at the end of a night out too, to be recommended.
The sign's smarter than 90% of the rest of the parade, but the shutters should go.
When did the kebab shop get the rather attractive smiley face sign? Looks a lot more welcoming now!
Oh. Since when? I can't remember seeing it open.
At least five years, probably a lot longer.
I've also been known to indulge in the odd kebab from Gulen's. Not Meze Mangal but not bad at all.
I quite like the optimism of the single table and chairs they put out on the pavement yesterday.
Having looked at Streetview I think I prefer the old sign which was more elegant even if it did say wine bar and restaurant both twice.
Can anyone explain why this is any more acceptable than Speedicars plastic illuminated sign which was hounded out from Coulgate Street?
I am afraid context is not an acceptable excuse.

Forgot to ask has anyone ever seen the neon sign illuminated?
In my view, context is relevant. On Coulgate Street, the stretch of road was immaculate and Speedicars had a virgin sign space on which to put something.
In this case, we have a tatty stretch of road with no consistency and this is better than much of what is already there, so I'm fairly relaxed about it.
The other difference is that Gulen's have tried to make an effort, whereas Speedicars' sin was that they didn't make an effort.
Still I understand that others may feel differently!
Quality kebab's I agree.
I've never seen the Gulen's winebar open in my 3 years in Brockley and have often thought that spot was wasted and had great potential for a small eatery or bar.
But a kebab shop attached to a night club? That's pure genius!
Is the club busy? I have never seen any activity there.
The new signage is the sort I might choose for an ammunition shop in a rundown American suburb; Ammunation [sic] anyone? It shows no respect to or reflection of the vernacular architecture and materials.
We really need a planner to engage on BC and take some interest. I suspect their neon sign would require planning permission; I have never seen it on though so I think I will ask them to take it down and see what they say...
@Anon 12.57. It seems you are ignorant to the effect that design and aesthetics in the public realm can have on people's experience of an area. Might I suggest reading more?
It is a night club with a licence for a kebab shop. I think they were refused several times applications to convert and stay open after hours.
Can't comment on their kebabs, hope the are better quality than their new signs.
What I find very sad is that Essence of India refurbished its windows but kept the terrible rolling shutters.
If they understood that horrible shutters make them look seedy and loose business. People like to look inside when deciding for new restaurants; whether it is open or not. Can anyone call Gordon Ramsey, we need a "Hell's Kitchen in Brockley" to explain the basics for succesfull retail business.

@TM, surley context is at the top of the considerations for shop fronts?
I would argue the location within the Conservation Area outweighs the context.
All of the shops along this paraded should have a "Sounds Around" replica signs...in my opinion.

I like to see the evidence base for linkages between aesthetically unpleasing shop signage and street crime. Also I read quite a lot, so go and patronise someone else please.
Here is the statistcs even your brain can handle: Marylebone High Street has great signage and interesting shops. The crime rate is much lower than Brixton and Peckam H.S. Is this the only factor? obviously not, but it is certainly a co-factor.
15 years ago on Marylobone H.S. there were only three charity shops and the area was deserted after 5pm... and then came Waitrose and Coffe shops.
Nice shops mean more shoppers; more money for shop keepers and more police, perhaps more improvements etc etc
Brockley H.S. follows an upper class rentier model where shop keepers can afford to change the sign and leave the shop closed and open it only for their private parties. I must resign and open a chicken kebab shop.

HANG ON! It's a nightclub? I've lived in Brockley on and off for five years and have always bemoaned the lack of a nightclub. Now I appreciate it's not Mahiki and I won't be meeting any Pippa Middletons in there, but still..
Has anyone been in there? I'm curious, how big is it? What sort of music do they play? When's the best time for me to check it out?
I've been to a load of dodgy nightclubs throughout university and in 20s. I feel Brockley really has the potential to shine here?
That sign makes it look like a badboi garage nightclub to me (interspersed with a bit of donk).

I watched a champions league game in there a few years ago after a power cut on Geoffrey Road. I was the only one in there...
My friends and I (all young, middle-class, white females) have been to Gulens - the nightclub - for a nightcap on many an occasions over the years. Especially before extended licencing hours came into effect elsewhere. It's ok - nothing fancy but perfectly welcoming. I'm astounded people say it's never open - it ALWAYS is!
