Bodge job Brockley [updated]

Friend of BC Lep Recorn has sent us another example of great work by contractors in Brockley, after Conway excelled themselves with their slapdash and hugely delayed efforts at Brockley Station. He says:

This photo was taken at the NE corner of the junction of Coulgate St & Foxberry Road. (This is similar at the SE corner).

It is the new one way sign that has been installed when that part of Coulgate Street was made one way.

It shows the electrical connection (white) coming out of the counduit (orange) and going into the sign’s post. All of this should be underground, the connection between the conduit and the post sealed and then completely covered with tarmac.

Not only shoddy – but clearly dangerous.

Haha, sorry, it was a race to the pun!

Cant believe Lewisham Council let them get away with this sort of thing time and time again.I bet if they were pulled up over it they would say it was temporary, which it may be but still could have covered the cable.

Who's a bright spark then Jon.

Are you sure this is Conways fault or is it UK Power Network's (formerly EDF) fault who are responsible for electrical connections to sign posts?

@John - fair query. I will amend the article.

Won't somebody think of the taxpayers?

The next time it rains and someone with stiletto heals treads into the exposed wire the lights of Brockley will make a nice big BANG!

That junction has been very poorly finished. The tarmac was laid then almost immediately dug up to get a cable across. The trench was then filled in but seemingly not rollered. It looks unfinished and you'd hope they were going to sort it, but with Conway you never know.

Walk down the pavement under the railway bridge towards Brockley cross and you'll notice it has been relaid with new slabs. The height and camber change as the road and pavement dip and curve. Where they've been unable to properly align paving slabs with the kerb, they've made the difference up with cement.

Personally I prefer the water feature they created outside the station ticket office. How they managed to position it so everyone crossing the bridge on a rainy day experiences it is fantastic...

I think it's been about 2 months that they've been "working" on that tiny stretch of road. Does someone from lewisham ever come and check whether they've finished a job or not? I'm permanently astonished at how bungled these things are in brockley.. As someone else mentioned, they finish doing a nice bit of paving only to dig half of it up a day later to fit some utility pipe or other. Seems like nobody is taking responsibility for the overall streetscape.

Has anyone actually told the council. Health and safety is everyones responsibilty in a sense. My experience is that most contractors, public bodies etc etc take H and S very seriously, and accordlingly will fix it quickly.

Yes the water feature is lovely. It would be nice to introduce some newts and a lilly or two to brighten it up a bit. And maybe add a bridge so you don't get your feet wet on your way to work.

Lewisham never checks any work and neither does Lewisham Homes.

I only wish that the installation of a CPZ area will solve it all!

If we had our green councillors back they would be all over this..C'mon Labour councillors, read the local blogs, get on the job..

Why is there that Conway metal box on the junction of Coulgate and Brockley Roads? Why are there still green fences around the yet-to-be-finished sign at the junction of Coulgate and Foxberry Roads? Why is the new pavement laid out into Brockley Road a different height from the rest of the pavement? I've never seen so much bodge in such a small space.

Epic Electrical Fail!

The key to Brockley is to get these clowns in Lewshiam council out and replace with some fresh blood. Else we're just wasting out time again and again. Come on guys get your act together and write some complaint letters. It has to be black and white.

Why does the council use Conway anyway? Surely there must be some other firms out there who want the work, and can do a better job than this?

Foxberry Mike said...

just sent this off to Lewisham Highways. will see what they have to say in reply:

Please can you advise when the works by Conway are ever going to finish in Coulgate Street. They have left unfinished and defective work for weeks now, including cracking pavements when these have been lifted to put in electrical conduits (which in turn seem to have been installed dangerously with cables exposed. I would refer you to the Brockley Central website where pictures of this are posted.

After being subjected to the shambolic performance over the works at Brockley Station a year or so ago, we seem to be having to put up with similar levels of non-performance from your contractor.

This is reflecting very badly on both Conway and yourselves, as seen in the comments section of the BC website.

Who are our (so far invisible) councillors?

I am emphatically not a Green but the Greens would have been all over this.... Sue someone or other was constantly posting on this blog and actually doing things for her pay.
