Ice rink plan for Hilly Fields

The Ladywell Ward Assembly on Thursday will discuss plans to create an ice rink in Hilly Fields as part of a "Winter Design Festival" in November.

We've no idea how this would be commercially viable, but it's a cool idea and one we're looking forward to finding out more about it. BrocSoc report:

'Would you like to see an ice rink on HIlly Fields? If you live in the Ladywell ward, please come and vote for it:

Ladywell Assembly, Thursday 22 September, 7pm, St Andrews Church Hall, Brockley Road, SE4 2SA Several excellent community projects have applied for funding from the Ladywell Assembly fund.

Brockley Society is involved in the Winter Design Festival, including an ice rink (synthetic ice) for two days in November on Hilly Fields. If you live in Ladywell ward you are entitled to vote for what you would like to see funded in your area.'

With thanks to Tressilliana.

What?! No! Ridiculous.

Sounds brilliant, though synthetic ice? Give me the real thing. I'll bring my skates and my Canadiens toque.

What? yes! Why not.

It's for two days TWO DAYS! less than most fun fairs. What possible reason could there be for not liking.

NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The ice won't be organic!!!

There is a space already set by for it. That eyesore of a vacant plot, the "cricket pitch".
It gets my vote.

What's the deal with that pich anyway? I'd never use it but like the idea of a regular team playing there.

I love this idea, though I never managed to remain upright on any kind of skate. I saw some little kids in Austria skating behind a push-along penguin thing. If you can sort me one of those I will definitely vote for it.

YES. About time the icy cynics thawed out a bit and went for some skating...

Love this idea. Yes please - and for more than just a weekend please

Has anyone else in Ladywell ward had any notification of this meeting other than direct communication from the groups bidding for funding? I'm a bit concerned because I haven't.

I haven't heard anything about it other than on the BrocSoc email. To clarify, I don't think BrocSoc is involved in any bidding - snyway, that's not how I read the email. I thought they were just notifying people who might be interested.

Local assemblies are listed here
http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/getinvolved/localassemblies/Pages/default.aspx
If you've been to one before they usually notify you by post, if not it's hit and miss.
Sounds like a good idea, there was a temporary skating rink in Downham Leisure centre a couple of years ago and it was very popular - they are very expensive to hire though.

The Ice Rink proposal is part of series of events that we are calling 'The Brockley Design Festival".

We are looking to put together a programme of novel "pop-up" activities that are designed to be a bit if fun whilst also getting people talking and thinking about the built environment and design.

Some if these are relatively cheap and straightforward to put together, whilst others require funding to work - hence the application to the Ladywell Mayor's Fund for this particular event.

The Brockley Design Festival is not a BrocSoc initiative, but the Society are supporting it.

More on the Festival in due course - we are still working on the programme at the moment!

In response to the question about notification of the meeting, a flyer is delivered to every home in the ward to advertise Local Assembly meetings. Human error will mean that a few places may get missed but in general everybody should know about the meeting if they read the flyer. There are also posters at various locations around the ward.

I live in the middle of Ladywell and haven't seen any flyers - certainly nothing delivered - but would love to see the ice rink plan go ahead

Cheers anon. I guess myself, Tressilliana and RosieH live at the places missed by the flyering then. Anyway for those interested, the successful projects at the meeting tonight were: Montage Theatre Arts, Youth Village, Lewisham Youth Theatre, Brockley Design Winter festival, Lewisham Community Sports and Brockley County FC.

Although nothing (in this country) can beat a flooded then frozen meadow - a rare combination I've only encountered once in my life - this is the next best thing.

Tremendous idea.
