The Menhir Crack'd

The Hilly Fields Stone Circle, built to celebrate the turn of the Millennium, has been damaged by fire. The Friends of Hilly Fields explain:

A very large fire on top of the flat stones in the centre of the circle occurred. The heat caused the stones to crack. Over time the cracks are becoming larger and smaller parts will dislodge.

They are currently seeking quotes to repair or replace the damage.

We have reprimanded the High Priest, Colin is now on double Kleenex duty for a period of three months. He had not risk assesed the event and did not use a suitable fire resistant mat.

Brockley's long had it's share of crack problems.

Did this happen ages ago? The stones seem to have been damaged for a while.

Our members will be up their tonight, all clubbing together to make enough adhesive to stick the stones back together. Nick, can I count on you to put in?

The stones cracked? From heat?

From fire, yes.

How can herberts be prevented from putting fires on it once it has been repaired or replaced?

fidgad said...

Perhaps burning said herberts at the stake might act as a deterent?

@ TM - yes, but it seemed a bit nit picking to say so...

Seriously, I hope it gets sorted out and repaird and does not happen again - I love the stone circle, from the concept of it, to memories of the the opening day, to Leo Stevenson's pictures.

I love picking a nit from time to time but alwaysdone tongue in cheek......I hope ;-)

The circle looks good on the Bing Bird's Eye view if you haven't tried it.

Well Fidgad, at least it would have the element of surprise.

After all, they wouldn't expect the Spanish Inquisition.

Visitors to Hilly Fields expecting to see an enormous crack tonight will not be disappointed.
