Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Anna's looking for help. She writes:

I am a BA Anthropology student at Goldsmiths College, writing a dissertation on memory and geography in New Cross, Telegraph Hill and Deptford. I am looking for local residents who would like to get involved in my project, taking part in informal, short conversations about their memories and recollections of everyday life in these areas. If interested, please contact me at an903am@gold.ac.uk

How much you paying?

Tamsin said...

How mercenary of you! I was feeling a bit mean suggesting that she should pay for the photocopying if we sent out flyers on her behalf to members of the Lewisham Pensioners Forum living in the relevant wards.

pic pls thx

It used to be great round here, the streets were paved with gold. It's all gone downhill now though since that new-fangled railroad came to town.

Oh so it's mercenary for a member of the working class to want money for a valuable asset.

No doubt over the years there have been many academic essays about New Cross, and look way the residents got in return.

A drug fuelled dump of an area, where gangs have shoot outs and innocent people killed.

Why does Hugh want a pic of Tamsin?

I see the students at Goldmiths are free loding again, having occuppied a building at the college...trust the college will send them the electric & lighting bill for the period of their occupation.

Brockley Nick will be first up against the wall...

Goldsmiths is now occupied in solidarity with the Novener 30th strike and the global occupation movement.

We reject the privatisation and marketisation of life, and the violent transfer of public wealth into private hands.

We stand with all those affilicted by this vile agenda and against those who profit from this enforced misery.

Yeah dropping a fire hydrant from a great height on another human is violent.

I can see the whole of the conveseration area becoming social housing, it's the only solution.

And everyone will be equal and leave happily ever after....except students from Goldsmiths will ensure they are more equal than others.

I'd quite like to live in a conversation area; I like a good chat. Being in a conservation area is dead boring though.

When I was a lad it was all diplodocus round this way, then all those mammals came over with their funny foreign ways.

I'd like to see a study of the Anon tribe and there "shoutingatbins" belief system.

are you hot?

if so you could buy me several pints whilst i regale you with whimsical stories of muggings my friends have suffered in new cross.

I think there should be a study of Anthroplogists.

The local species is an eccentric creature often found carrying a clip board, observing the Brockley community for evidence of sub-culture worthy of a dissertation.

If you come across one be kind to it and feed it with some wholly fictitious story telling.

It will retire to its burrow and spend a happy evening tapping away on its laptop knitting together your tall tales into a grand theory.

Though they may not realise it, their prospects are poor. When they graduate, they eventually find themselves on the job market qualified for little other than door to door market researchers or high street charity muggers.

I thought this was one of those annoying Goldsmiths ads on the ELL.

I wonder if the actual project is to see exactly what kind of responses you get to a reasonable request on an internet forum. The pick of the crop for me has to be anon at 13:08, who is lapsing into self parody.

Brockley Nick said...

@Faux - LOL. That is certainly a subject worthy of study!

Foxicus said...

Blimey, as a social science researcher I know that it's ALWAYS ******* hard to get participants! Respect to Anna for being canny enough to cast her net wide in this direction. Does noone have anything constructive to offer? REALLY? Jeez...

Anonymous said...

On the day teachers went on strike over money, a member of the working class is said to be 'mercenary' for wanting a reasonable sum of money for passing on their knowledge and wisdom.

Foxicus, has it ever enter your head the reason you don't get participants is because you aren't prepared to pay?

I can't the tutors of Goldsmiths not demanding to be paid for teaching students.

The defining feature is nothing to do with how "working class" they are. The defining feature is how tight the person is. It's an academic study, be happy that you are helping out. Do you ask for 20p when you post a comment here? Do it because you're interested, if you don't want to - don't. She would be reimbursed by goldsmiths which would get some of that cash back from government funding....

Actually why am I being drawn into this stupid debate.

Anonymous said...

"why am I being drawn into this stupid debate."

Because BC is a car crash.

fabhat said...

Well I've emailed Anna about being involved - it'll be half an hour of conversation about the area and then possibly a follow up - in a nice cafe in Brockley...

Anonymous said...

Goes to the tutors at Goldsmiths and tells them to stop whinging about pay & pensions as they are helping others with their academics studies and should be doing it for nothing.

Middle Class oiks rip off and exploit the working class...after years of academic studies, looks like nothings changed.

Bet this student becomes a 'consultant' and will charge by the bucket load for their wisdom.

Don't sign a waiver without seeking advice, if it forms part of a best selling book or the basis of a good career you should rightfully be financially rewarded.

Brockley Nick said...

This is a BA student project. What on earth are you going on about? If someone on the street asks you for the time, I hope you're going to demand £1 off them for the valuable information.

My son just interviewed some people about their experiences during the blitz for his school project. Perhaps those pensioners should have haggled over licensing rights before they coughed up their precious memories.

You are either a troll or the most bizarre poster ever to grace BC.

Danja said...

He just wants a share of her student debt, leave him be.

Brockley Nick said...

"Does noone have anything constructive to offer?"

Anna just emailed me to say five people came forward as a result of this article. The response articles generate is not to be measured by the comments section alone.

Anonymous said...

BC is just a haunt foy busybodies and weirdos who think the sun shines out of Brockley's arse.

Brockley Nick said...

A case in point

Anonymous said...

So what if it is a BA project, do you think her tutor has waived his fee, because she's doing a BA?

Why shouldn't people ask for a resonable amount for their knowledge, or is it only swanking middle class 'professionals' who are allowed to set a price for their services?

When things get shown for what they really are..exploitation...the professional middle class get all high and mighty.

On the one hand they'll protest about closure of libaries on behalf of the poor in society, when they actual mean the poor can subsidise the middle class in their reading habits.

How about a social study to show the negative impact the middle class have had on the education system and have created ghettos by moving to be in the catchment area of a particular school too the exclusion of the less well off.

Brockley Nick said...

By all means try and charge for your anecdotes if you insist. They're only worth what someone is prepared to pay for them. Let us all know if you find a buyer.

£5 for anyone who wants to know which curry house I ate at tonight. Anyone? Anyone?

Mb said...

Tell you what, I disagree with Lou on almost everything at a deep and visceral level but at least i understand what he's attacking.

Is anon screaming about exploitation by the moneyed elite (those milionaire public sector lectureres) but demanding payment to help a university student? How very market driven, capitalistic of you.

Bring back Jonah and the giant lizard conspiracy.

Anonymous said...

Sounds like a great project.

Coming to this late I have to wonder whether several BC readers have gone properly potty?

The comments are remarkable. How else does anyone know anything about the past unless people talk to each other?

Very strange.

Pleased some people are going to talk to this student. I'd be interested to hear more once the paper is finished.

Anonymous said...

Clearly the middle class don't plethora of celeb biogs by people who've done diddled squat or have no apparent career or talent.

Katie Price does very nicely bringing out a new biog yearly and possibly makes more money from her books of fiction and she doesn't write a word of them.

Someone joked about charging for being asked the time, well how much does the talking clock charge?

Enter a competition and you will be more likely charged.

Brockley Nick you need to reduce your charges, no one in their right mind would pay what you are demanding.

Time Out was primarily a listings magazine and people paid for that information, which the publishers obtained for free.

What next, someone who's never been heard of before writing music and charging people to hear it...what a shocker!!

Anonymous said...

"The comments are remarkable. How else does anyone know anything about the past unless people talk to each other?"

And when was the last time you spoke to David Starkey or did you buy one of his books, for which he got a fee.

Nah, if your middle class you probably demanded the library got it in and got others less well off to pay for it.

Mb said...

Public libraries, payed for through taxation, accesable by anyone regardless of income or "class" good isn't it. Are you a free market liberal who resents being forced to pay for a service used by others who may pay less? If you are in higher education do you think that you are rich?

Don't understand. You seem happy to disseminate your bizarre political philosophy on here for free. Thanks for that.

I've volunteered for two research projects, in fact
I PAYED to participate in one. That's because I get a warm fuzzy feeling in adding to the sum of knowledge in the world.

I have an idea for a children’s book based loosely on the Mr Men series and BC.

I’m thinking of calling it 'Mr Anon' and some of the characters that spring to mind are.. Mr Angry Anon, Mr Bitter Anon, Mr Deranged Anon, Mr Social Class Obsessed Anon (Chippy, to his salt of the earth mates), Mr Conspiracy Anon, Mr Anti Parents Having A Life Anon, Mr Anti Everything Anon, Mr Honest Fare Anon - brother to Mr Deliphobic Anon. Mr Everything IS Shit Anon and so on.

Naturally, Anti Anonymous Exploitation Anon, may have something to say about this but he can do one.

I guess you would be hard pressed to find such a range of personalities amongst the other contributors.

Moreover, they would no doubt be looking for a cut of the royalties, damages for defamation and generally throw their toys out of the pram unless their depiction conforms to their expectations of their monumental self regard.

We anonymous bretheren have our foibles but are not hamstrung by personas and their attendant egos.
