The South East Central Awards 2011 - Vote for the local Pub, Restaurant and Shop of the Year
On our sister site, the South East Central forum, we've launched a public vote to find the pub, restaurant and shop of the year in the greater, greater Brockley area. Forum users nominated businesses from each of the neighbourhoods covered by the site: Brockley, Nunhead, Peckham, Ladywell, Honor Oak, Deptford, New Cross, Lewisham and Catford.
Voting is open now and the winners will be announced on December 20th. While we're looking forward to finding out the winners, the best thing about this process has been learning or being reminded about all of the excellent places on our doorstep. So even if you don't vote, check out the long-lists for each category and ask yourself: if you haven't been to them all, why not?
The shortlisted top 10s for each category are very strong and, for the most part, pretty fair, although there were one or two places that got robbed and poor old benighted Catford didn't get a single nomination, which seems a little harsh.
Pub or bar of the Year 2011
Cafe or restaurant of the Year 2011
Shop of the Year 2011
We'll also be launching Brockley Central's traditional vote for Best Newcomer shortly.

Can we have more than one vote (rank 1, 2 and 3?) or is that two much of a faff? I can think of a few signifficant newcommers that i'd like to vote for.
two? *too*! whatevs.
Typical yoghurt-knitting liberal. All must have prizes. No, one is better than all the others. Choose. ;)
The forum is dominated by Nunhead residents at the moment so I expect the voting will be too.
Babur.
Well that's possible and at the moment, the Old Nun's Head is doing rather well. But El's Kitchen, New Cross House, Persepolis and Brown's of Brockley are among the strong contenders at this early stage. Banmbuni and Soper's are surely doing well on merit - lots of BCers rave about them.
And if every BC reader casts a vote, it will dwarf all other constituencies.
Look where first past the post got us!
Brockley Market
Cliff Thorburn is not, primarily, a presenter!
Brockley Market is not a shop. Nor is Lewisham Market nor Deptford Market.
Jesus...
Els kitchen
my vote for "restaurant" goes to lions fried chicken opposite the station, finger licking good
shop has to be the esso garage, petrol and polos all in one go, with a flavia coffee if you're feeling cosmopolitan
Is there a "Clarkson" prize for troll of the year?
The Clarkson prize surely goes to Lou for his dinner-party-scandalous comments on chopping the hands off liberals or whatever he endlessly drones on about.
terencetrenttwatty gets the 'least original comment' award. A golden mung bean or something hilarious like that.
I'm kind of happy for Catford to be missed off if it makes it easier for the rest of us to get a table at any of the great places there!
That would surely be an insult to Clarkson?!
The most "Tedious" award should surely go to DJ.
Sounds Around!!!!!!
Love Smiles Thai cafe.
Re the above commen, always wondered how Sounds Around survives!?
I second Sounds Around.
Third it.
fourth(?) it.
I'd also put a word in for Turners Domestic Hardware while we are on the subject of useful local shops that don't sell food.
Yes, I'd second that too - where you can buy fuses, and nails, and things, in the quantity you need rather than a pack that is either too big or too small.
And where you can buy nearly anything.
Not allowed to vote twice, though - might retract my Sounds Around vote as they should get enough other support.
Oh the tactics of voting..
Old Haberdasher must be in with a chance, surely? A brilliant makeover, superb food and great service.
I'd like to nominate Slater & King ladywell for best newcomer
Mo Pho and Broca Food Market
Nominations closed on December 1st. Check the forum for the shortlist and vote for your favourite.
