Doggie do gooders needed in Brockley

Sally writes:

We are a registered national charity whose brilliant volunteers give up part of their free time offering dog walking and other support to elderly and terminally ill pet owners, unfortunately we don’t have many volunteers in the Lewisham area so any help you are able to give the Trust in support of our efforts would be very gratefully accepted.

We have two lovely but very strong German Shepherd dogs in the Brockley area whose owner is unable to walk them. We desperately need some additional volunteers in this area of London, even if you can offer an hour a week to help these lovely dogs it would improve their quality of life plus it will give their owner peace of mind. If anyone can help call Sally on 01736 758 707 or via email volunteer@cinnamon.org.uk Please also check out our website for more details www.cinnamon.org.uk

german shepherd dogging

There are 2 German shepherd dogs walked by an elderly asian couple that attacked my dog & punctured his leg, they have also bitten other dogs in Ladywell cemetery & Hilly Fields. If it's them they need training too (they have been reported to the police on a number of occasions).

I would be very interested in helping and may well contact the charity. However if the German shepherd dogs are the ones referred to by anonymous 1805 that is very concerning. Is the charity able to comment on this?

The idea of "strong" German shepherds definitely puts me off ... would be a scary responsibility.

But better to tell it how it is - good on Cinnamon.

Is there a minimum age for this?

@18.05. Yes there's a Japanese woman who's been walking those GSs for the last few years in the cemetery, so I guess we're talking about the same thing here. They still frighten the bejaysus out of me as I approach them when out running, but if anything the dogs are pretty friendly towards people, (the woman told me she had them trained by the police when they were puppies.) though she doesn't seem able to control them when there's other dogs around. I do wonder if these two GSs are the dogs in question. If so, I really would not want to be responsible for them in any way.

Not much consolation in the event of something awful happening, but presumably the charity insures its volunteers...?

Seems like an excellent charity doing very good work. I'm thinking of volunteering. Anon@23.30, there doesn't seem to be a minimum age for volunteering. You need three referees who have known you for more than 5 years.

If it's the same dogs as anon@18.05 mentions, then it sounds like the owners might have recognised the dogs are too much for them outside and that's why they're looking for help. Hopefully someone younger and stronger would be able to control them better - and maybe it's not too late to train them better.

I've seen the japanese lady and GS, she has no control over it, it's huge and came hurtling towards at me, my dog and my toddler and frightened the life out of me, thankfully it didn't do anything more than have a sniff and run off.
