ELL2 link to Clapham Junction completed

The Mayor of London has today hammered a golden spike in to the Transmetropolitan Railroad - the East London Line extension from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction.

The Mayor called the Overground one of the UK's most popular and reliable railways and "tightened a clip fixing the last rail in place on a 1.3km section of new railway linking London Overground to existing track leading to Clapham Junction."

There is no confirmed opening date for the new service, but the latest deadline they've set themselves is the end of 2012.

does anyone know if this is going to affect the number of trains per hour coming down through our way?

@Anonymous 14:28. What the hell is that supposed to mean? If you don't like the area, why don't you up sticks and move?
Brockley is smaller than Clapham, hence the reason that the dempgraphic is greater, and why there is 'more to do'.(a couple of extra pubs, more Cash Convertors, and burnt down Party shops, (thanks to the rioters for that one)).
I love the Brockley/Ladywell/Lewisham triangle that I live in, and although I do enjoy jumping on the ELL to shoreditch for a fashion pint, I sure don't want to live there. So Anonymous, cock off to Clapham and give your house up for someone who will enjoy it. Oh and by the way, I for 1 am sick to the back teeth of this boring 'mung' nonsense.

MikeSE13, why do you waste your energy and happiness on getting wound up by anonymous people? There's no point. Your anger really is their fuel.

I'm Anonymous 14:44 by the way

Oh I see Anon 14.28 pulled his/her comment. Makes mine invalid now. apart from the last sentence which I stand by vehemently!

Anonymous 14:44. I have lived in brockley for near on 16 years now. and have been a S.E londoner for nearly all my 38 years. When people spurt nonsense against the area I cherish, it gets my back up. I support local enterprises, by local produce where I can and eat/drink at local establishments. I feel I do my bit.
Besides I have been far too happy recently....needed to rant.

@Anon1444 - yes, no it won't. It should make the little stretch from Surrey Quays to Canada Water a little less squashed, but the interchange at Canada Water more squashed, especially when there are issues with the Jubilee Line

I think you mean 'buy'

More trains too please.

I propose a pact for BC regulars - never repsond to mung, bds or we dont want to be like clapham and dulwich posts?

I used the 'Overground the other day and I was stunned to find the frequency somewhere between tube-like and train-like... any plans for it to come up to "every 1/2/3 minutes" like the Tube is most of the time?

Brockley Nick said...

It's currently every 5 mins through the central core. When ELL2 comes on stream, this will be 3.75 mins.

Hear hear. That rubbish about "mung" is so off the mark and that BDS stuff is unbelievably unfunny.

What do you bring to the site, then?

ELL2 doesn't give us any great benefit here in Brockley, does it?

Brockley Nick said...

@Tobermory - not much, but if you want to get to Clapham it will be the handiest route. Or if you're going through the central section from Canada Water to Dalston, trains will be more frequent. But yes, marginal benefits.

Would be much more beneficial to people around here if they had quick direct trains through to Victoria from Crofton Park like they do on Saturdays and Sundays. It's a huge shame they don't.

Hopefully they sort it out so that the west croydon / crystal palace branch is more evenly spaced ... currently every 4th train is a "new cross" only one ... would be good to space the others out evenly so that you don't have to sometimes wait forever for the next train ...

I think to alleviate over crowding at rush hour, only the New Cross bound ELL trains should stop at Surrey Quays. The rest should zoom on past as Canada Water is so close geographically and as Croydon and Crystal-P trains are so mobbed its not very nice. Gosh Canada Water is going to be even more packed at rush hour once this extension opens... :(

Overground lines are named by their destinations.

ELL2 will truly expose the flaws in this Frankenstein railway.

It will share track - and delays - not only with a different Southern branch from Brockley trains, but also potentially South Eastern too.

It could also be affected by disruption at Clapham Junction and on other Overground services.

Basically the chance for things to go wrong - and to impact on other services multiply considerably. And when things go wrong, they'll go really wrong.

Will the "loop" line still exist?

I find it quite useful, a bit slow but lovely if you are not in a hurry and have had the foresight to get some coffee and a paper.

Yes, outer loop between London Bridge and Victoria (through Crystal Palace/Streatham Hill etc) stays.

There has been some speculation that this could also be taken over by TFL and become part of the Overground, which makes sense given its orbital nature.

Fattyfattybumbum makes an excellent point. Canada Water will be absolute carnage at rush hours when this new extension opens. Oh and good luck getting to work if you use Canada Water during the Olympics.

ELL2 will be good for those of us at the Crofton Park end, as we'll be able to change at Denmark Hill for services to Clapham High Street and Clapham Junction.

We can do the former now, but on all days apart from Saturday there's a 25 minute wait.

The latter will be very useful as it'll open up a lot of destinations in SW London without having to go through Zone 1.
