Mike + Ollie's pop-up restaurant - dinner time

Last week, Brockley Central prediction number 2 for 2012 did come to pass.

Yesterday, Brockley Market pointed out to us that prediction number 5 had come true without us noticing:

Aside from Masons' successor, the Hilly Fields Cafe and the Toads Mouth replacement, Brockley will get another place to eat. It will be the brainchild of one of the area's many foodie entrepreneurs, perhaps one who's cut their teeth at Brockley Market. It will be closer to #Meateasy than a formal restaurant.

Mike + Ollie is a Brockley food business that trades at Brockley and Deptford Markets. They are also launching a pop-up restaurant, promising to "cook a beautiful dinner with a musician once a fortnight for 15-20 people in intimate surrounds. The location will vary from time to time but will be within the Deptford/New Cross/Brockley area."

They're now taking bookings for their first evening, so register with their website to get details.

To be honest, since they first announced their plans in October last year, we're not sure this counts as a prediction. It's also not quite what we had in mind. However, it's one of a growing number of pop-up restaurants operating in the area, testament both to the quality of culinary entrepreneurs living locally and the latent demand for local restaurant options. It's this combination which led us to make the prediction in the first place.

Is "pop-up" the new "independent"?

Does this mean it will be at people's houses?

Shhhh! Trying to book a slot. If you've tried their grub at the market you'll know that they can cook.

I'm booked in for 17th Feb and really looking forward to it. Will report back

It's not at someone's house, but I'm not sure I can say where it is.

Their menu doesn't seem to have vegetarian options. I wonder if that is the case or are they just not listed?

Good luck to them, but this type of cuisine doesn't agree with my palate.

If the food they offer at Brockley Market is anything to go by, then this will be worth going to. However, is does drive me mental waiting 30 mins whilst just one of them (Ben or Ollie) artfully places individual coriander leaves into the wraps etc

Anon 12.01 - I asked about a veggie option and was told that for the time being it isn't on offer, but may be in the future.

Not having a veggie option is pretty awful in this day and age, IMO...

Mike does make veggie food at Brockley Market on a Saturday and Deptford on Wednesday and Fridays check out this great veggie review here Review on The London Sandwich Blog

If you book one of his pop ups there is a section to mention your dietary requirements... like we have done.

I for one am really looking forward to this.

@fong: why can't you say where it is?

fong said...

I assume because they haven't published where it is, they don't want people who haven't booked to know to stop walk-ins and having to turn people away? I could be wrong though

No veggie option?

Why not just eat meat and vegetation like everyone else?

They're not obligated to cater for fussy eaters!

Their food is amazing. You do have to wait at the market- but it's worth it and let us remember how long we used to wait for Meat Wagon/Meat Easy! Sometimes 5 times that.

Hello there vegetarians.
For the first round of evenings that I shall be putting on, there will not be a designated vegetarian option I am sorry to say. This is not a discriminatory move, but is merely from a practical perspective. I shall be operating out of a small kitchen and will be the sole chef so offering substitute dishes will be highly problematic, this time round anyway. In the future I may and would like to be able to accommodate. My diet is more than 90% vegetarian and I may in the future hold entirely vegetarian evenings so do keep your eyes peeled. Thank you, Michael.

Dear Michael,

Thank you for your kind and well-thought out response.

Dear Anonymous,

Sounding out as to the awfulness or otherwise of what looks to be an exciting, local and admirable venture, just because it does not fit within your own self-imposed culinary confines is at best unhelpful, and at worst spitefully narrow-minded, making you sound petty, self-entitled and poorly informed.

Saying IMO is also awful, IMO.

Kindest regards,

R

Went last night. Was absolutley brilliant. A lot of thought, energy and passion had gone in to organising it. Didn't runs smooth as it could but that's to be expected with any new venture. The food was amazing!!

Can't wait until next months dates are released.

Thanks Michael and Co.
