Brockley Road trees

Anderson: On this first day of a new century we humbly beg forgiveness and dedicate these last forests of our once beautiful nation to the hope that they will one day return and grace our foul earth. Until that day may God bless these gardens and the brave men who care for them.
- Silent Running

Brockley Road now has the new trees that Brockley Cross Action Group asked Lewisham Council for. Here they are, being installed, opposite the Barge. Gradually, grot is being usurped by green.

You install an oven or a boiler.

Maybe you even install Windows 7 - if you're dumb enough not to own a Mac of course.

But surely you don't install a tree? Plant perhaps?

But why oh why are they planted so close together? they will strangle each other after a few years of growth. Another waste of time and money.

No doubt they will be watered by trophy dogs

This is a question that the organisations involved in getting the money for the trees are asking this very moment!

There should have been 2 trees either side of the crossing.

Goodness me, the glasses are half empty in SE4 today.

Anon, I'm no country bumpkin but I'm fairly sure trees grow in groups in the country. Forests? Or is that something else? I can never remember.

Good investment of time and money.

Huge positive for Brockley High Street. Please whoever is in charge of watering them please do so or we will have dead tress like the ones planted outside Broca Food Market 2 years ago! Can Brockley Action Group persuade Lewisham Council to replace those next!

Can someone install some decent shops?

Nice subtle association of grot with the Barge and the grotty proles who drink there.

What a strange comment.

Yes, so far as I'm aware the Barge isn't being removed to make way for trees.

Has anyone tried their new menu though? I went over the weekend... proper grub!

It is carefully microwaved from frozen to give a taste that titillates the tastebuds...should any of the customers have any.

Oh no - are those trees outside the Broca dead? I was waiting for them to come back to life in Spring - how do we put pressure on the council to replace these?

Anonymous said...

what type of trees are they?

Anonymous said...

That'd be typical Lewisham giving us the tress we want but f-ing up the planting.

My guess is that the cost of multiple pavement apertures means we'll get them bunched.

The Trees are great -but do look very close together?
Has anyone with any gardening/forestry been consulted?
Do Lewisham Council have an Arboricultural dept and have they OK'd this planting?
