The future of Toads Mouth Too

The new owners of Toads Mouth Too, the Brockley Road / Coulgate Street cafe, have been in touch to explain their plans for the venue. Based on what they say below, it sounds perfect - giving the area another drinking and dining option, to complement The Orchard and The Barge. Top of BC readers' wish list for Brockley have been a restaurant and a bar: These guys are planning both. They say:

We are a young group of people with different backgrounds, some of whom have lived in the area for many years. We are all foodies and over the years have spent many an hour debating what we would do if we were ever to take the plunge and open a restaurant of our own. We came very close a few years ago but it was not to be so when the TMT came up for sale we all felt it was the perfect place and it was now or never!

It’s been a long process to get where we are but now we have the keys in hand it is full steam ahead. As you may have noticed, we have already started the refurb, which we hope will be finished in seven weeks. The biggest work involves moving the kitchen downstairs and creating a bar area upstairs. It’s a special place (and very dear to many Brockley-ites) and we want to retain its charm and quirky layout so the small intimate rooms will be staying! We are having a general makeover to give the place a new lease of life and hope to restore at least one fireplace in one of the downstairs rooms. We have been having lots of fun in the process, knocking down plasterboards and ceilings – dirty work but very satisfying! We really hope to create a friendly, inviting and relaxed space.

We plan to offer a full lunch and dinner menu. Our food will be simple, tasty and seasonal. We have a Frenchman amongst us so there will definitely be some French dishes and broadly speaking it will be European-inspired. We will also be offering bar snacks, sharing plates and an awesome Sunday roast! The bar upstairs will allow us to have beer on tap (although limited by space. Sorry!), a full wine list and a few cocktails for good measure!

We hope to be a local venue where people from Brockley and further afield can enjoy a great meal, a relaxing drink after work or a lazy weekend brunch in our lovely garden. We are incredibly excited and can’t wait to open our doors! We will be in touch soon with more updates and to give you a more concrete opening date.

Finally, we just wanted to say that the support we have received so far from the local community has been incredible and a real energy boost. It is very much appreciated!

Thank you,

The New Team.

PS. Now for the elephant in the room…we can confirm that we will have a new name. Sorry in advance to those that this will disappoint! And for the eagled-eyed out there, it’s not ‘Le Toad’ either! Watch this space…

---

We're due to talk to the team in more depth in the next couple of days, so if you have any specific questions you want us to put to them, please post them here.

"Our food will be simple, tasty and seasonal."

Excellent news - sounds like proper grub is on its way! Looks like the tide is turning for artisan fare fans.

If I'd made a wishlist of things I hoped would happen with Toads Mouth Too, pretty much everything mentioned here would be on it. Good luck to the new owners, really hope that it goes well.

Great! Looking forward to this.

Totally agree with the above comments! Exciting!

This is great news - just what the hungry hordes of diners in Brockley want!

At last! Another (hopefully) great place for a drink and something to eat in Brockley ... something we desperately need! Hopefully this will tip the area over the edge and we'll get loads more of this kind of stuff now ... there's certainly high demand ... exciting times!

Things are really looking up for BXers this summer.

Indeed, with the Brockley Barge and now this, I won't need to go anywhere else!

Brockley Barge needs to be bought out now ;-)

Sounds amazing, and will certainly try to make the journey over from Ladywell at least once.

A very sensible decision to move the kitchen downstairs too.

From a Ladywell perspective we really need someone to take over Masons and do something similar.

A proper kitchen was always the limiting factor. Glad they are keeping the nooks and cranies.

This sounds very exciting...my suggestion is a to use that limited beer space for a good cask ale or two, something sorely lacking at the Orchard (despite all of their other wonderful qualities). And also, please, no children. KIDDING! ...

Sounds great. I'm really pleased to hear that you're keeping the spaces downstairs too. Looking forward to it, good luck with all the work!

Pretty please can you do an awesome cooked breakfast, available on both Saturdays and Sundays, up to at least 3pm? There's nowhere in the area that does - unless anyone that knows otherwise? I can't face any more cheap & nasty greasy spoons...

A couple of questions/comments for the new owners:

Some friends used to have an irregular but sort-of monthly knitting group at Toads Mouth until they stopped opening in the evenings - does that sort of thing fit in with their vision for the new place?

Will the lunch menu include some cheapish, light things (I work from home and often pop out for lunch but I don't want to spend or eat too much)?

If they're going to offer free wifi to entice people in to work, would they consider asking people not to use laptops after, for example, 6pm? I think it's a bit of a vibe killer sitting next to someone glued to their laptop when you're out in the evening (but maybe that's just me).

And lastly: Brockley needs somewhere where I can order a stack of pancakes, maple syrup and crispy bacon for breakfast!

Yes - please keep all day breakfast and veggie breakfast, especially at weekends.

And ban people from wearing sandals and corduroy inside.

No blacks, no Irish, no dogs, no kids. Only joking about the first three.

This sounds great. You will be deluged with customers in the first few days, so please do try and make sure all potential technical hitches are anticipated and dealt with BEFORE you open, and get experienced staff, both in the kitchen and front of house.

Keeping it simple sounds like an excellent plan. The length of the menu is inversely proportional to the quality of the food in my experience. At least one fish dish and one vegetarian would be good.

Have you seen the fantastic cakes and tarts on offer in the Broca cafe? Many are baked locally by a woman called Akiko - if you could get her to bake you a few things for your dessert menu, my joy would be complete.

I'm extremely happy to hear the plans for this! Sounds absolutely fantastic.

I would love to see a nice ale on tap, really happy the small rooms are staying and glad there is an Orchard alternative. Love the Orchard, but just a little small to get a table.

Great news indeed, sounds like it will be spot on. Ditto anon and Simon, would happily forgo an average lager on tap in favour of a nice ale.

Yes - Top Chef Cafe near Adelaide Road does a range of excellent breakfasts all day at price points to suit all pockets. Do give them a go.

T'would be lovely if it could stay open as late as most average pubs (say at least 11pm most nights). Personally I'd love another place around BX that *felt* like a drinking venue in the evenings, rather than somewhere that felt like a cafe that also did a quick beer after work.

Anonymous said...

PS. That doesn't mean it can't be a cracking cafe during the day - just I'd prefer there to be a shift of mood in the evening.

The Mash article could have been a lot funnier... bit tired.

However, the line 'It will be a hybrid of Waitrose and The Wicker Man' did make me laugh.

Anonymous said...

Mash is often funny but to anaymously sling it at Nick like that is very brave and even funnier...

D said...

Yes, ironic that a satirical article about smug twats should be used here in such a smug and twattish way...

Anonymous said...

I really hope that they will sell draught beer. IMO, this is on of the major things that let the toad down.

Brockley Nick said...

This clip (which is presumably about the Now Show) might equally apply to the Mash, if you replaced "pitch and rhythm" with "rude words" http://bit.ly/9OrkWh

Is twat a swearword?

My biggest wish would be that they install a proper extractor fan to syphon the cooking smells out of the building.
I hate leaving The Orchard stinking of food that has been griddled to death and TM2, back in the day, smelling of burned cheese. Not very sexy, so megga big extractors please.

H said...

Awesome. I only have one request - I concur with the weekend breakfast until 3pm, having used the Toad almost exclusively for this purpose. And please, for the love of God, keep hash browns on the menu, the Toad´s hash browns have saved me from many a hangover, and the Mess don´t do them. If you don´t I may have to start bringing my own.

Mb said...

Hash browns, a controversial breakfast choice. Streaky bacon or at least the option of streaky, and smoked.

Anonymous said...

Sounds absolutely great. how exciting. :-))))

PLease sort out the awful Toad situation with the same person handling cash as dolloping out the food. Quite disgusting.

"Frog's Gob" is hilarious!

Time to buy in HF before prices go stratospheric and people realise how close we are to the City etc.

Anonymous said...

Please keep the breakfast! There is definitely a market for it today, I ended up going to the barge for breakfast this morning! Was always busy 10 am onwards in TMT x x

Mb said...

On a different but not wildly irrelevant track. Went for a run round Hilly Fields. Playground full, tennis courts in use plenty of people lounging on the grass and kids larking around. Sullen teenagers trying to out cool each other.

Just think how great it will be once the cafe opens and there are people playing cricket?

A place to eat AND drink requires a certain sort of space. TM2 is not it. Choose one or the other, or I fear mummy and daddy's money will going down the drain you crazy foodie youngsters. Simples.

Anon at 21.46 - Correct me if I'm wrong but The Orchard is smaller and does food and drink. It's also always packed... Mummy and Daddy's money (not that I think it is that) should be pretty safe in my book.

Good news that Toads having a re-furb!
It will be a "gold-mine" because its the only restaurant in the area that has a desent out door eating space now that summer is on its way!
Lets also have competent waitering staff that knows whats going on.

Can't wait for 'Le Grenouille' to open, good luck to the new owners. Ps. some nice, local Meantime or Camden Town Brewery beers wouldn't go amiss :-)

I'd absolutely vote on keeping a weekend-based late breakfast. The Full Toad saved me on many an occasion!

Also, can you find out if they're keeping the wind-up key on the side of the building? If not, I'd like to buy it!

Moira said...

The key was designed by Artmongers and funding raised by the Brockley Max team for the festival a few years ago. I have spoken to the new owners about taking part in this year's festival but they've not been in touch. I do hope they will offer themselves as a new venue particularly as the Opening Night will be on their doorstep.

French food? I'm liking the type of food offered up by that Rachel Khoo, hmm eggs en cocotte, frenchified weekend breakfasts

I think it's a good idea to keep the weekend breakfasts and add a Sunday Roast it's a key part to the way so many people manage their weekends.

Anonymous said...

'a Sunday Roast it's a key part to the way so many people manage their weekends...'

You should get a job writing waffle for government. People like a Sunday roast, would be a better way of putting it. Even they're vastly overrated.

Anonymous said...

Great news! I love The Orchard but a) it's often rammed and b) the food - tho wonderful - is very pricey. It would be great to have not only a more affordable restaurant near the station, but also one that properly feels like a bar, too. Hoorah! One question for the new owners - will you be keeping the backyard space as is? And will you be having barbecues there in the summer? *hopeful face*

FrFintonStack said...

Looking forward to the draught beer, but can you please go for something other than Meantime? Yes, I know they're local, and their beers aren't bad, but they're not a patch on a lot of other London breweries. (Kernel, ideally, but they don't go draight much.)
