Refreshment Room on Hilly Fields
With work underway on the new Hilly Fields cafe, here's a snapshot of its forefather, the Hilly Fields refreshment room, photographed in the 1900s. The photo is currently on sale on eBay, thanks to Rachel for the spot.

I wonder how many grumpy Edwardians were lining up to complain about the yummy mummy with her giant pram taking up all the space?
And prams sure were big in those days!
That would have been a Yummy Nanny back then...
A Canny Nanny?
For the nervous professional types of Brockley, the buggy is an important status indicator.
what new matron stolling proudly across Hillyfields with their Bugaboo or Pegperago would not be put out by another sporting a considerably more expensive Porche baby stroller.

One of the nicer things about Brockley is that it seems mercifully free of over-engineered buggies.
Just get yourself a good pushchair. They fit more easily in cars, buses and cafes, they are much cheaper and they do exactly the same job.
Stokke is the new must have not bugaboo....
The "wheels and kids in parks" lobby will be outraged. You won't be able to hear badgers foraging or some such.
Don't think anyone will ever be going back to those perambulators, but the babies might prefer their rocking motion
I can picture fathers on Clapham Common with one of those Porche strollers weeping as they scrape dog turds off the wheels.
Beautiful design though.
I took my children to a fair recently and the fairground people had these ..

Ah! The Silver Cross, still popular with Old money who employ professional Nannies with uniforms in Holland Park.
Porches?
Nothing says vulgar arriviste in stronger terms. A bit like the cars.
It would be quite something if we had both, to add the rich social mix that patrol Hilly Fields.
I see quite a lot of very elaborate baby buggies being pushed around Brockley.
I would not be at all surprised if an essay on the Semiotoics of the Baby stroller in the Urban Park is being written by some Goldsmiths type before long.
For the casual observer ,sitting in this new cafe playing baby buggy bingo, could make the procession of prams a little more entertaining.
If there is a Porche and a MacLaren, then one day Clarkson will have to cast is critical eye over the new models.
Nice! Can I have a pie please?
Actually - two. I need one for each of my ANTLERS!
Mr Moose.
I even put that through the calorgas operated joke analyzer I keep in the shed (just in case).
Nothing.
Might be from before its time as I only recently changed the bottle.
On a personal note, I am enjoying the imagery.
Anyone know why the original "room" which appears quite substantial was demolished?
