Parkrun 5k events to come to Hilly Fields
On the Brockley forum Sally points out that Parkrun is coming to Hilly Fields. The grassroots group offers free timed 5k runs to all ages and abilities and has delivered more than 9,000 events across the country, including similar runs in Crystal Palace and Greenwich.
Sally says:
They're looking for volunteers to help with the events. This could be setting out course markers, marshalling on the course to make sure people are going the right way or handing out tokens at the end, for people's times. If you think you could help then get in touch with Lynne Atkinson: lynneatkinson@englandathletics.org
Details of the first event are to be confirmed.

Wicked! A friend was just telling me about these runs last week and I was whinging that my nearest is in Dulwich Park - cant wait for these to start!
Ooh dear, "grassroots", Nick? Not sure I needed a quick round of Bullshit Bingo at this time of day ;-)
Doesn't seem to be listed on the site yet - Highbury Fields, yes, Brockwell Park, yes, but nothing for Hilly Fields or Brockley...
It's not on the site yet because they're still at the organisation stage. It's real though, I promise!
That's great news. I used to go to the Crystal palace one but if there on ein Hilly fields that's great!
@ Sally - sorry to have appeared to doubt you. Well done with the pre-publicity. They can now hit the round running (as it were) <>
@Anon - what's jargonistic about the grassroots sport? It's as old as the hills.
Is proper consultancy speak I'm afraid.
I guess you need to tell Romford and District football league that they have been hijacked by management consultants and marketeers then:

Good luck with that.
Fantastic! I thought the closest was Brockwell Park. I can see this becoming a regular part of my weekend.
I'm going to complain aboth this. The park is for quiet contemplation and is now being invaded by cricketers, yummy-mummies with prams - and joggers. Where will it all end!
I think you are joking (with an implied surname, Garnet), but just in case you're not....
Between nine and eleven on a Saturday morning is an unusual time for quiet contemplation - and unlike some parks Hilly Fields is probably big enough for this extra usage.
And you might be able to put in a plea that the route does not go too close to the stone circle and orchard - so that patch can remain quiet and contemplative.
As a longtime parkrunner back when I lived in North London, I am absolutely delighted to see parkrun coming to Brockley. I was pretty pleased when they started the Dulwich one a few weeks ago, but this is fantastic news.
I'll have to find another park, Hilly Fields has become an outdoor gymnasium for fitness obsessives.
To all the dogs in mangers - it will all be over by about 10am every Saturday - get over yourselves!!
There seems to be an assumption that urban parks are a little bit of untouched rainforest inhabited by undiscovered tribes and rare marsupials. Theyre not, they are urban playgrounds. Man made and managed for the use of everyone. That includes snoozing under a tree, playing sponanteous and organised sports, music, commercial and non commercial fairs, tea shops, picnics, CHILDREN etc. Why should pseudo spiritual zen warriors have a special claim on the space?
Oh, and dogging.
Actually, hilly fields is already packed between 9 and 11 on a Saturday morning. I walk my dog with at least maybe another dozen people, 1 field is packed with keep fitters, 1 field packed with footballers, kids playing/riding bikes, loads of joggers already, people using the gym equipment and tennis/basketball courts full. Stone circle usually taken over by more keep fitters...with people doing a 5k running too, well sorry but the park will be heaving
Great. Wonderful too hear the whole community is putting it to good use.
Anon @20:16. We're on different pages, it's GOOD that the park is well used for recreation, it's what urban parks are for. The wildebeest can f**k off back to Africa if they want a deserted savannah to migrate across.
On the subject of panting round Hilly Fields, I noticed a sign at Brockley Station today advertising "Brockley Nordic Running". Is this a specific-to-SE4 version of speedmincing, or something more sinister?
(The sign didn't say if it was honest running or artisan running, or whether there was dogging involved.)
"Actually, hilly fields is already packed between 9 and 11 on a Saturday morning". Please post a photo, I've never seen it packed, ever.
Xeb i am so pleased u escaped north London! Congrats
Hey. I escaped North London too.
Who is this Tamsin why can't they all go to bloody Telegraph Hill! Quiet recreation that's why Hilly Fields was founded! Now its spilling over with your jogger and your keep fit fanatic and your screaming kid and your dog's crap and your city type on there mobile phone all day long without a breather and so much as a how are you supping their lattes please send them to Telegraph Hill a high point where they can all jump off! Hilly Fields must remain British.
Alf, that might have worked a bit better if you'd used some punctuation...
If I am elected mayor tomorrow I promise the good people of Brockley to prioritise the progress of the joggers at the expense of all other park users. To this end I will ensure that there are limited routes through the park painted, at enormous consultancy expense, Barclay’s blue; and empower the PCSOs to fine any non-joggers, including prams and pushchairs, who do not use them.
Where the paths cross at the centre of the park, the blue will disappear several meters short. The resulting collisions between joggers and walkers will teach them a lesson for not jogging, and ensure the problem is resolved in a Darwinian manner.
At peak periods, 7-11am on Saturdays, a ‘clogging charge’ will be imposed to limit park usage to proper people who can afford it; preventing riff raff from west of the tracks lowering the tone of our park. Of course all the residents of the enormously expensive houses facing the park will be exempt, so long as they have a ‘Vote Boris’ poster clearly visible my midnight tonight.
In order to facilitate jogging throughput the speed limit will be increased and crossing timings for non-joggers enormously extended to favour them. Finally I will of course personally initiate and participate in the first jog and claim it was a mayor’s office idea in the first place and swear furiously at any park run rabble who claim otherwise.
Vote for me you know Ken can't run for toffee!
Boris you didn't mention the whiff whaff table by the tennis courts.
Anybody else noticed the increase in cars driving along the footpaths, using the park as a short cut. Yesterday a woman in an audi drove quite fast up from the Tyrwhitt entrance, thru walkers, toddlers and dogs, turned right at the cafe and then was halted by a walker by the tennis courts. She turned round and sped back down the hill.
A quick shortcut never hurt anyone.
That's bad. Take their number and (if you can) a photo and report to Glendale? Failing that perhaps caltrops.
The occasional car on Hilly Fields is BDS approved - so keep your noses out (unless you like that sort of thing)
I've had an email now from Lynne at England Athletics confirming there will be a meeting for local volunteers shortly, so please do get in touch with her if you think you can help out once in a while.
Yaaayyyyyy! I have moved to Brockley from Finsbury Park and loved going for a Parkrun on a Saturday morning. I'll be the massive, sweating, wheezing man looking cross with my walkman on. Hopefully I won't have to talk to anyone about anything, but can still enjoy the human contact.

"I'll be the massive, sweating, wheezing man looking cross with my walkman on."
Could you be more specific?
There's a cool article about Hilly Fields here:

So does anybody know if/when these are starting. I was excited to hear it was coming and then it seems to have taken so long that I'd forgotten that it was even happening ...
Would be good to get it started and into the routine before winter!
You've probably discovered this already but if not...next Saturday - 8th Spetember.
That's incredibly annoying *September* obviously but I can't just leave it.
