Light at the end of the tunnel for La Lanterna?
On Twitter, Rachel reports today that kitchen equipment was being taken in to La Lanterna, the Brockley Road restaurant, which has been closed for several years. This follows one or two other recent sightings of activity inside the defunct restaurant. Could this rotting waste of space finally be flickering in to life?

Well they've just closed down their one in East India Docks- so I wouldn't hold your breath
That might actually be promising - if they're closing others down then they might be more active in trying to shift their properties and it might be able to get into the hands of somebody who actually wants to do something? Wishful thinking, but you never know...
The other explanation is that as they've shut down the West India Quay one, they wanted somewhere to store all of their kitchen equipment before handing back the keys?...

What kind of restaurant do people think would go well there?

Sorry to disappoint you, but it is not going to open. Recent works have turned into a hostel with breakfast room on the ground floor.
Not very succesful restorateur this guy, Biagio. He certainly missed the new trend of Brockley.

Seems to still be owned by Biagio who look to be selling their Picadilly location (http://www.daltonsbusiness.com/restaurants-for-sale/prime-piccadilly-restaurant-and-bar-london-uk/257835) and their Bankside one.
Shame - great chance missed to make serious money.
Are there no rules around empty business premises and the powers that councils have? I think they have some when it's an empty house. I'm also sure the owners could find someone who'd make a great business out of that space, good pizza or otherwise. They'd see some money then.
Will the hostel serve honest fayre?

Biagio bankside has been closed for a while. He could not make that restaurant work either.
@8 June 2012 16:10 I think you're right that they've moved kitchen equipment to this location too. The EID location one was hilarious - it was the only restaurant within the big office complex (about 7000 workers on-site), and yet was fitted out like a travel tavern cafe, staffed by the sternest of europeans who slammed the lukewarm dishes down like someone who's just finished a sambuca, and was crazy expensive. They literally failed with no competition. Any of us could do better with a breville and a whiteboard..
Mind you, had a peek in the door walking past yesterday and did look a lot more shiny and modern inside, and people were working... time to eat my hat!?
A lot of activity outside and inside the place. Hopefully it is the light at the end of the tunnel and not a train coming our way.
