Brockley's Rock celebrates with cake and chips

It looks like we picked the wrong week to quit carbohydrates. Kyri from Brockley Road fish and chip cafe Brockley's Rock writes:

Today is the one year anniversary of Brockley's Rock, our first birthday. To celebrate we're doing some special giveaways for the whole day.

Firstly, we'll be giving away a free portion of regular chips with every fish. On top of this, as it only seems right to have cake for a birthday, we will also be giving away a delicious free cupcake from Pat-a-Cakes in a choice of chocolate, vanilla or cinnamon to everyone who eats in the restaurant tomorrow, and for every fish sold on the takeaway, including kid's cod. So that's free chips and free cake for every takeaway fish! We'll also be serving a new menu today.

I'd also like to say a huge thank you to Brockley Central and to all our customers who have supported us over the last year. We've been really welcomed into the Brockley community and it's been an enjoyable first year. We're looking forward to many more!

I had chips from there just yesterday. I was drawn in by a chalkboard ad for Mackerel sandwich for £2.80.
Chips were crunchy on outside and fluffy in middle aka excellent.

Oh and Happy Birthday how fast a year goes...

Brockley Rock is in Ladywell

Anonymous said...

Is that why the Top Chef never gets mentioned?

Those guys deserve it-nice fellas running a nice business. Shame I'm living 8000 miles away and can't drop by anymore. *SOB*

Top Chef is also in Ladywell

Brockley Nick said...

And Ladywell is in Brockley. All good.

Anonymous said...

Ladywell? Where exactly are the boundaries then?

Anonymous said...

Ladywell and Brockley are two distinct areas, Nick has a fantasy that everything he says is correct

The boundaries bore and the Top Chef troll should get together and save us the tedium.

I was of course mostly being facetious, because this is a stupid argument, made by the terminally dull.

Yes, this little stretch just about scrapes in to Ladywell ward, but much of Ladywell ward is in the SE4 postcode area (brockley). As is Hilly Fields, which is also in the Brockley conservation area, etc, etc.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter. Why anyone would want to carve already-small areas up in to tiny little demarcated parcels is beyond me.

Ladywell-warders are the equivalent of the guys who ran around saying 2000/1 was the real Millennium. They may have technically had a point, but all these definitions are ultimately arbitrary and thus the real test becomes the weight of popular opinion:

If people consider it Brockley, it is Brockley. And no-one who lives in this spot thinks they live in Ladywell.

By all means, claim it for Ladywell. Nobody else cares.

Why don't they call it Ladywell's Rock? Because it's in Brockley. And Brockley is cooler.

No, you are under the impression that anyone cares. If a chip shop is good and not to far I use it. Where the parish, postal, constituancy, geological, demographic demarcation is not interesting or important. Which by remarkable coincidence reflects your annoyance.

Reminds me of those people who reckon they live in "Telegraph Hill" - aka a collection of rotting council flats on the side of a New Cross hill.

I would recommend Brockley's Rock don't cook fish to order at busy times, I understand they want it cooked fresh but I don't think this is necessary sometimes. I don't go there any more due to this as I can't be bothered hanging about for 20 minutes everytime I want fish and chips. I've tried ordering over the phone 20 minutes in advance but when I get there i'm still hanging about while people who just ordered instore in front of me get their meals before me!!!

Just my thoughts like!!

What's that, anon 16.11? Have we done something to upset you?

I agree

Happy birthday to Brockley's Rock. I would happily exchange a hundred birthday cakes for just one of their fish cakes. Easily the best addition to Brockley Road in the past decade. The whitebait isn't bad, either.

Agreed that fish and chip shop fare should be fast. Maybe offer an optional fresh cook for fussy locals and faster fare for everyone else.

Put the number in your phone and call them on the way. No issues.

FOOD! It's food, not 'fare'. I bet you also call people squire, wear bow ties and people avoid you at parties.

Happy Birthday. My go to place for fish and chips

kolp said...

They are doing a roaring trade this evening.
Cod n chips £4.90 (chips free & plus a party)

Anonymous said...

Wait, the cod on its own is £4.90?

kolp said...

yep, blame overfishing of the Atlantic

Anonymous said...

Blame dishonest fare. It's £2 in most chippies

Anonymous said...

No fish n chip shop sells cod for £2.
£4.90 is about the norm.

Anonymous said...

Love the place.

Simple food done well.

Quite as good as up North.

I really should try it one day but I usually go to (what most normal people know as) the fish and chip shop in Ladywell.

They charge £5 for cod, whoever said most chippies sell cod for £2 is talking nonsense.

Anyway, happy birthday Brockley's Rock.

DJ said...

Nowhere sells cod for £2 - not even in the north. I think the 'dishonest fare' troll must exist on a diet of Pot Noodles and ignorance.

so, technically, brockley's rock is in Ladywell

Happy Birthday Brockley's Rock

I actually LOVE Brockleys Rock - they really do, rock!

Anonymous said...

Any cod on sale anywhere in the UK for just £2, is not actually cod but some cheaper alternative like catfish.

Ladywell

lol

Anyway, I had a great fish and chips from there last night, and the cinnamon cup cake was yum! Thanks!

The hook up with Pat-a-cakes to celebrate their first year in business was inspired.

It promotes both businesses and trade.

It supports a fellow local business, it a was coherent idea, cakes-celebration.
I've eaten there twice this week!

Other local businesses take note!

I'd love a follow up interview with this business

Brockley Rock,we love your fish n chips. Please don't stop cooking fresh to order. Who says fish n chips has to be super-fast food?? I have an autistic 8 year old daughter who generally can't wait 2 mins for anything - but she WILL wait 10 mins for haddock n chips from Brockley Rock (which I think are a good bit cheaper than the Sea Cow in East Dulwich).

Anonymous said...

The Sea Cow is hardly a benchmark for honest fare.

Let the Rock have 2 queues - an express/honest fare queue, and a dishonest fare to order queue.

Sorry admins, didn't realise my last post would be deemed offensive. This probably isn't the right place to talk about that anyway.

Anonymous said...

They have a queue frankly because they are so good, and I would hate to see them drop their standards in order to rush. And this from someone who doesn't eat fish.

Keep the vege-cakes on the menu please!

Arabin&out said...

We bloody love this plaice! ;-)

Seriously though, I've never had a problem with long wait times, and the food is delicious. Why anyone would want substandard/not fresh food just because it's five minutes quicker... that confuses me. But each to their own, I guess.

If anyone hasn't tried it yet, there's a groupon for Brockley's Rock today: http://www.groupon.co.uk/in/.loNQMj/,14770929
