The New Gu
The Gulen's makeover is nearly complete and it will be reopening shortly as a cocktail bar. The latest refit was necessitated by the Council's planning guidelines, which officers have been trying to enforce here since 2011. Its exterior is already looking a lot better.

walked past yesterday and its looking good. the same cant be said for Alby's! aside from the horrendous exterior which makes it look like a seedy massage parlour, the porch area looks like a budget cab office and the interior looks like a 70's indian restaurant.
I could do with a job! Does anyone know who I can inquire to?
Is it run by the same folks? Look forward to seeing what comes of it.
i wonder if these establishments are publicised here purely for the purposes of a bit of middle-class mocking of something not deemed 'appropriate'.
These people/owners are trying to make a living along with everybody else - making unhelpful snide comments when you have no intention of going into either establishment is worthless.
No they aren't. I wasn't even writing about Alby's Place, which is the one that people are talking about.
Alby's place has a menu up! I saw it the other day and meant to post about it. It does. It appear to be a xyz shop and if it is, it is one selling Dover sole.
Yes... that menu has come down again... but please post about it on the Alby's thread.
@ Anon 14:35 - know what you mean, but also get the middle-class baiting the other way around.. the main thing is that something is open and available for people from all walks of life to go in and spend money locally. I just look forward to going into Gulens and buying a beverage or two - and having another option for an evening drink on the high street
Will it still be a private bar?
I can't wait for Gulens cocktail bar to open!
The 80's cslled, they want their 'cocktail' bars back. What is this? Eastenders? FFS!
/i had hoped they re-opened as Lebanese restaurant. Nice felafel and kebabs on a plate...
Disappointing is just a cocktail bar. I thought nobody opened cocktail bars after the 80s
A high quality awning now in place with the name 'Gulen's Bar' printed on.
Maybe this could be preparation for some seats outside.
A public bar that served Turkish food could work..
Hasn't Gulens always been a private bar for local Turks though?
In the last couple of years it has been a private hire place for birthdays etc.
However, according to the people serving kebabs the new place will be a proper bar, open to all.
The Gantry and now this, is BC in danger of becoming cool....?
Pretty much everywhere in London is gentrifying. From Catford to Stratford - home to a Waitrose. Brockley is a long way from that. But it's charming in many respects in its own way.
When someone asks on a local blog if their area is becoming cool, then by definition it isn't.
Brockley has been cool for ages.
I spotted some hipsters in Catford yesterday.
Catford is rough, BC is lame but getting better
"I thought nobody opened cocktail bars after the 80s"
You don't get out much do you?
Next Brockley Central drinks in Gulen's please.
Seconded, even I'll turn up for that one!
Hear hear! With the new applied lettering and an awning I saw yesterday, Gulens is now looking very swish indeed - well done them!
The menu has reappeared in Alby's window.
If they refurbished next door and created a single space for drinks and turkish food they would triple their revenue.
So far so good anyway
Alby's now has some additional signs, in the same font, making sure it be known that it is a restaurant.
