Strange things are afoot at the Circle K
Quick high street update.
Gulen's is getting another makeover (following last year's black-out), but remaining a bar. Meanwhile, BC Twitterers report signs of life at the Old Bank restaurant in Honor Oak, leading to speculation that it may be reopening soon.
We hope to bring you more on both soon.

Wow, a new Gulens, still closed for most of the time, and the new fantastic Alby's Place ... things are looking up!
Has anyone been to Alby's yet? What's it like?
I spoke to one of the owners of Gulen's the other day, I could see signs of activity and was peering through the windows. He told me it was going to be a wine bar. When I worryingly cast an unconscious glance at Alby's, he read my mind and said it would be nothing like that, much classier. He seemed as annoyed as we all are at what's happened to that place. Fingers crossed they come up with something good!
Hopefully it's a bar that is open normal hours...
Well hopefully there can be some improvement on the new “Gantry” which should be called “Old mother Hubbards” as the cupboard is certainly bare – been there 5 times since it supposedly opened only to find it resolutely shut!! Still thank god for the Wickham Arms.
There is action in Crofton Park as well. The old Kriss Kuts barbers is becoming a hair botique. Work men are in at George's old place. There seems to be work at the old White's shop and into Honor Oak the Tai Wu is becoming a chiropractor.
Aye, the HOP Old Bank's windows have been freshly papered and there looks to be a fresh planning app displayed for a fastfood outlet - will check detail tonight... Be good to see this lovely building reopen but not sure if the area really needs a large fastfood joint. Hopefully it's not Domino's again, as per the very recent unchanged Tesco & obtrusive flats resubmission on the Brockley Rd opposite the Brockley Jack & Budgens.
Is there any news on the corner estate agent in CP which was crashed into some months back? Still boarded up, still an eyesore...
there is a post on se23.com saying the planning application is the old domino's one dating from 2011. Apparently someone is using the Old Bank for theatrical storage - http://www.se23.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=6585
Glad to hear that Gulens is being re-opened. When it first opened about 7-8 years ago, it was a very relaxed, intimate and comfortable winebar.
Has anyone seriously not been in Alby's yet? You seemed to have enough time to take a photo and review the signage, but not go in?!
Its a private members club, so no, nobody has been in.
Am pleased that people are starting to refurbish their shops and upgrade the High St terrace, irrespective of their use... however worth pointing out that Gulens only removed their sign (which was unauthorised and gargantuan) as result of planning enforcement notice served on them...
Whether its them or Alby's - the important thing is that people want to spend money locally, and these establishments need to help us do that!
How does anyone know if it's a private members club? Has anyone thought to go and ask how one becomes a member, if indeed one has to?
Is there a Doner Kebab in the wine bar?
Gantry is cool but most of the high street sucks and looks run down.
To Anonymous: There was a post on here (swiftly deleted) in which someone said they tried to get in and were kicked out because it was for members only. There was a blue movie playing on a tv apparently. Why don'y you try and get in and report back?
Wonder if they'll keep the random white UPVC door which survived the last re-fit, when it should have been the first thing to go!?
I heard it's a vegan deli.
Andy Endwell, just to let you know that The Gantry will be opening next week from Tuesday to Sunday…The cupboards are certainly not bare!! They will soon be introducing breakfasts! Can't wait ;-))
Had a lovely lunch in the Gantry on Friday and a splendid Dominics post hangover the next day.
@Anon1417 - yes, I have tried on several occasions to go in. Door locked. Windows blocked out. No information about contact details / opening hours / what it is. Makes it hard to write a review...
Not sure about the Old Bank site but apparently Sainsbury's is looking like it will get the go-ahead for shop at 55-59 Honor Oak Park. The highways department has said it will raise no objections, despite some concerns from about delivery lorries etc.
The Old Bank has a new notice on it today re application for 'regulated entertainment' license.
I didn't know Tai Wu had closed! I saw the other day that it was shut & a lot of stuff outside, but hoped it was a re-fit.
A shame - we went there quite a bit.The food was lovely and the owner a nice guy. :-(
What is Regulated Entertainment?
Regulated entertainment covers the provision of entertainment or of entertainment facilities. The descriptions of entertainment in the Licensing Act are: The performance of a play; An exhibition of a film; An indoor sporting event; Boxing or wrestling entertainment; A performance of live music; Any playing of recorded music; A performance of dance; Or entertainment of a similar description to live music, recorded music or dance.
My money's on it becoming a boxing ring.
Gulen's is going to be a cocktail bar according to the sign in the window. Alby's looked open for business last night and now has an Italian food menu in the window.
And with that, all the made-up bollocks about it being a private club or brothel was swept away in one movement.
Maybe now people will also stop referring to Gulen's as a 'private club' as they once saw a black person walk in.
Oh come on.
The old bank in HOP is going to open up as a pop up eatery and bar... I'm told
Gulen's have made the best of a bad shopfront now.. lets see how the inside comes out. Walked past Alby's this morn to take a look - menu looks tasty but have you seen the prices?! Eye-watering, michelin level.. Quite a few of the mains £20+ each!! Blimey..
