Gulen's Begins, August 17th

Gulen's Bar
173 Brockley Road
SE4 2RS
www.gulensbar.com

On August 17th, Gulen's wine bar reopens after a makeover and strategic rethink, which means that they will be open seven days a week (until 1am most nights and 3am on Fri/Sat), meaning we will at last be able to turn up for a drink without wondering whether it will be closed.

The opening party for "the most anticipated cocktail bar in Brockley" is on August 17th, 5pm-3am - entry is free.

It's great to see Gulen's become an open bar, rather than a private party venue and for Brockley to get a proper late-night venue at last.

Next brockley drinks venue obviously.

Hooray! More booze for Brockley.

I think they have got the ethos badly wrong and haven't leared much from the other business around them, but let's hope it turns into something much better than they can envisage.

Anonymous said...

why is the "ethos wrong"

Anonymous said...

What ethos, what other businesses are you talking about Ian?

Mb said...

Brockley doesn't have a bar with a late licence. No idea about it's ethos but t wins on that alone. As it happens I think the chaps and owner at gulens kebab shop are perfectly fine. By the way, there's a notice in the window of Albys about a modification of its licence for a staircase and bar/restaurant. People could be mistaken for assuming that they are utterly clueless not to have had the appropriate licensing in place BEFORE they open.

Good to hear that all Brocklyites are welcome now.

Sort of related what's happened to Alby's?

Anonymous said...

Interesting, I guess they will mop up customers from The Gantry and The Orchard which seem to serve only until 11pm.

The Brockley Barge is open later at the end of the week and I daresay some late drinkers may meander across the road.

Together they should provide a heady mix of late night imbibers and the Jam Circus might lose a few customers.

Will there be a door charge, I wonder? A penalty for customers keeping Continental time? Will it be nice or will it be the gathering place of creatures of the night?

Will it be like the bar with the catchy music in Star Wars?

Brockley awaits with bated breath.

More fun times ahead .. yay !

How are we going to keep that clean? said...

The choice of furry, deep pile seat coverings is interesting, even brave, from both a style and practical point of view

Wondering as you are Aricana, what is going on with Alby's? Has anyone actually been in?!

As for Gulen's opening night, I'll be there on Friday!

Brockley Jon said...

Looks and sounds interesting, hoping for a nice lazy loungey speak-easy type vibe. Where can I see these deep pile seat coverings? And what is TWILLION I wonder? :)

A Twillion pounds for drinks.

So Twillion is the promoter, got it. The typos on the flyer and the appalling decor mean that this place will surely appeal to all those who bemoan the lack of 'honest' (i.e.non-middle class) places to eat and drink in Brockley and the apparently all pervasive rise of 'mung culture'. Or they'll stay away as it looks a bit rubbish...

jennym said...

Are you all deluding yourselves and forcing out the positivity - let's face it looks like another heap of crap for sad losers from the barge - surely you can tell that by just looking at the outside

Anonymous said...

That's the sort of attitude that makes people think they can't go in Alby's

Brockley Nick said...

I agree it's a bad attitude. But it's not "attitude" that stops people going Alby's. It's the fact that it's not open.

Anonymous said...

Shame, it looks pretty dated from the pictures - but it must be challenge to make rectangular-shaped bar visually appealing. I'm sure the emphasis will be on the music creating the vibe - but TBH the last place on earth I'm going out 'to nod my head to this' is on Brockley Road next to a kebab shop. S'pose it's handy if you like your burgers phat...

Thank you very much for those who have left positive comments and feedback for Gulen's Bar. As one of the guys running the bar, I'd simply like to say to those who hide behind their computer screens and mutter rubbish come down and try one of our cocktails and be amazed at the quality and brilliant staff we have employed to give Brockley a better image. At least some of us are putting Brockley on the map. Btw we opened today and the customers that came in left more than pleased and did not come from across the road. :)

Hooray for honest tradesmen such as the above - and boo to dishonest naysayers with vested local interests.

Looks good to me.

I like the Orchard and Gantry but surely we don't want everywhere in Brockley to be the same kind of place attracting the same type of crowd.

The attitude of JennyM is pretty disgusting when the place hasn't even opened properly yet.

Osh said...

I'm looking forward to trying out this place and think JennyM sounds like a horrible person. But Anon, what do you mean "vested interests"? If you are going to say something like that, you need to explain it.

mk said...

@Steve Nico Williams - I see you're advertising on Resident Advisor...does that mean you plan to do nights of a similar theme to those happening around Peckham?

Anonymous said...

The place seems fine to me and I'll be checking this place out as often as possible. MK you're comment reffering to nights of similar theme in Peckham, show how out of touch you are with reality.

@Steve - I just google you and noticed you own Tramp Magazine. Will you be advertising the venue to all you're readers?

steve nico williams said...

@anon, yes we will be advertising to tramp readers and thank you for putting @mk straight.

Anonymous said...

Confused by the Peckham comment and the "out of touch with reality" and "putting mk straight" comments. What are the "nights of a similar theme in Peckham"?

Anonymous said...

tramp readers?

mk said...

Eh? What are you talking about?

I was referring to nights at Canavans and the Bussey Building (house/techno/electronica in "theme"), although I forgot to write that bit.

What was wrong with asking that?

Anonymous said...

The music policy may be somewhat tainted by its association with R&B, but Gulens provides ready access to excellent cocktails after hours.

"The music policy may be somewhat tainted by its association with R&B"

Arf?

Anonymous said...

I understand their afterhours license is until 12pm. Is that correct?

TJ said...

Just drove past and there were some tables outside and a nice large space inside with seating on either wall. All it needs is a few customers and it will be well away. Looked good and is a welcome addition to have another choice in Brockly. Good luck to you.

Looks like an honest establishment, I hope they ban kids.

I don't like Rhythm and Blues, any chance of some Cliff Richard or pre-gay Elton John?

widget said...

Yeah cos loads of parents take their kids to cocktail bars...

Standing outside Alby's yesterday. Two blokes are looking in the window:

Bloke 1: [something inaudible]
Bloke 2: "I think you're right, bruv, that ain't no restaurant!"
Blokes 1 and 2: [loud laughter]

Do we have a review of the opening night?

Brockley Nick said...

I can provide a review for Lollibop in Regent's Park, but if anyone has one for Gulen's, please send it in and I will post it

Anonymous said...

I can post a review on the first night if it's helpful as a resident on harefield road I was woken at about 1.30am by people shouting up and down the road till about 2.30am,this is not the normal for a Friday night. As those who have left night clubs a distance away have had a chance to get there hearing and speaking straight last night I had to overhear of rubbish,to be greeted by the rubbish bin on the street emptied and strewn over the road and path.
Review over 2/10 for the kebab shop only.

Think it's a tad harsh to blame that on the new bar... No real evidence that the two were connected...

Laura James said...

I went for a couple of cocktails last night for the opening and my girl friends and I really liked it.

Staff are friendly, menu is great, will be going back to try and get the window seats!! The non-alcoholic cocktails are just as tasty as the alcoholic ones, which is rare.
The clientele in the bar definately did not seem the type of people who throw bins in the street either!

Anonymous said...

Expensive at £9 a cocktail, but they are very good cocktails, friendly staff and a nice decor. Good addition to brockley. Think it might struggle at the cocktail price - couple of pounds less and it would be busy.

Anonymous said...

Is Brockley in danger of having credible nightlife?!

Great addition to the area, I am sure the new crime wave (the tipped bin) is not connected.

Barfly said...

£9? Ouch. But genuinely and non ironically want it to succeed. Frankly if it's half way decent and sorts the prices it will do fine. We need a late night opening place. Now Albys..... What's occurring? I smell a metaphorical rat.

Anonymous said...

How about this, buy 2 cocktails and get the 3rd cocktail free? Price of 2 cocktails = £18/3 = £6 per cocktail. That's the current offer on at the moment.

Anonymous said...

I bumped into Alby in the Talbot and he reaffirmed his commitment to bringing back honest fare to Brockley.

Anonymous said...

What has Albys got to do with Gulen's bar? Surely everybody knows two the are not connected, can we please stick to the topic folks " Gulen's Bar".

Anonymous said...

Gulens and Alby bringing honesty back to Brockley.

i've been to the haberdashers recently, drawn in by the buy one get one free cocktails at happy hour. it still doesnt have much atmosphere and the cocktails arent great but 2 for £7 is a brilliant price. The Shoreditch in Shoreditch does really nice cocktails 2 for 1 during happy hour, so 2 for £10. Gulens looks like a nice place and if the cocktails are good and they did a similar sort of BOGOF happy hour offer i'm sure it would draw people in who would then be willing to spend £9 per cocktail after happy hour ends.

Anonymous said...

The cocktails at Gullens bar are now 7pound each. I popped in the Other day. Think we should give the bar a chance, it's early days and the cocktails are impressive

Anonymous said...

Happy hour from 6-8pm with cocktails at £4
