Meze Mangal's Kebabiography

Apologies to all of those (incredulous and excited) BCers who sent us this information over recent weeks while we sat on it, but now the The Standard and the News Shopper have forced us to get our arse in gear, reporting that Meze Mangal is currently ranked the seventh-best rated restaurant in London by users of Tripadvisor.

As they point out, its rating is higher than lofty rivals like the Ritz and Le Gavroche. Truly, they are kings of social media.

I do feel a bit sorry for them for all the headlines calling them a 'kebab house'. It kinda makes it sound like a grubby takeaway has been voted higher than the Ritz - and would possibly even turn people off!

Well deserved! The Evening Standard tonight says they will have expanded into next door by early 2013. Perhaps a major Brockley landmark (the container) will finally go?

Having spent time time in Turkey earlier in the summer I can tell you that kebabs are held in very high regard. With Mangal large charcoal grill they are probably a kebab restaurant and one a Turkish usta would be proud of.

Kebabs with a capital K.

Oh, I know, believe me - I'm just saying what the connotations can be here.

its the view of the rusting shipping container that puts me off

This happened last year. I think they have a fan club....

Who owns that wretched container?

SamB_UK said...

They do, I believe. It's where they store the wood.

I know its technically Brockley but you'd think it was New Cross if you didn't know...

Ok, I admit the Daily Mail is my guilty pleasure...

They should get rid of that container, close down or be closed down. Eyesore is an understatement.

Anybody with any degree of feeling about the area should boycott the place until they get rid of it.

Anonymous said...

They are NOT a kebab house.

Dalston has better places.

I am boycotting the Meze Mangal until they sort out the container business.

This area seems to have far too many businesses that treat shop fronts as convenient car parking spaces or ugly storage facilities.

Maybe these newspapers might report on that rather than rating which place does the best belly buster.

You think the Evening Standard with their apparent knowledge of London would pinpoint this place more precisely than simply stating it is Lewisham. St Johns or Brockley would have been more helpful.

Ben H said...

No one knows where St Johns is and Brockley would confuse as it's in Greater New Cross.

Tamsin said...

They might think it reasonable to simply identify by borough. How specifically are the other places pin-pointed?

On the otherhand it might just be a north London thing - anywhere south east of the Elephant is Lewisham until you get to Bromley which is Kent.

I've been a couple of times and the food is very nice. It does annoy me though seeing that container make things look even worse than they are and I resent the owners for it.

Meze Mangal is not even the best Turkish restaurant in South London!

FM Mangal on Peckham Road is much nicer, and cheaper too.

Heading to Dalston, Mangal 1 Ocakbasi on Arcola Street is better too.

Fat Bastard said...

yes, Trip Advisor is simply a collection of opinions from people who have bothered to comment on Trip Advisor.

Not worse for it but don't think anyone is seriously saying it's authoratitive. It's the best one from me within easy walking distance and ive not tried all the other ones that are within a quick travel radius.

Remember that Babour was rated in the top ten in London by the independant, another great place but I'm sure a little research would cast doubt on that rating.

it's a bit of fun, thats all.

Another vote for the Dalston ocakbasi restaurants, they seem to have space for wood without needing a rusting shipping container outside the front. It really is beyond a joke. I thought Nick said he was not going to mention them on here till they sorted it out, I'd rank the antisocial unneighbourlyness of it alongside UBR problems.

Anonymous said...

I'm suprised they don't need planning permission for that permanent structure outside the restaurant.

With the recent serious fire in another part of Lewisham maybe a fire inspection is required, to check the wood in the container isn't a fire hazard.

Mb said...

Shooting, drug dealing, urination vs an ugly container. Not really comparable, no.

Mb said...

Having "lots of wood" doesn't automatically add up to a fire hazard sufficient to cause it to be removed.

It is ugly though and they should, would be I the resting to see what legal measure have been tried. If it's not breaching any regs then we have to hope the owners simply get a guilty feeling.

Honest fare beats mediocrity, well done Meze Mangal, purveyors of chargrilled honesty.

I love Meze Mangal. Sod the shipping container, it is an ugly road anyway.

Anonymous said...

Meze Mangal is fine, but I do feel it's highly overrated around here. There are much better Turkish restauarants around.

I still love the song they made and put on you tube. I can't seem to put a link on here but google 'meze mangal you tube' and it's the first one. Genius.

The link is in the article.

Lady in the Well said...

Doh! Sorry. It's also on the daily mail article too.

Made ugly by a graffiti covered rusting sea container.

What motivation is there for anyone to make improvements along that part of Lewisham Way with that ugly container sitting on the forecourt?

@Mb
Have you considered the shootings, drugs etc are partially the result of the surrounding environment, which stimulates a culture of violence.

Mb said...

Yes I've considered it and accept the general point. My annoyance is proportionate. Firing a gun, keeping people up at all hours and pissing in someone's garden vs an ugly container. If there was a choice between the two I'd choose the latter. There isn't a choice and one doesn't automatically lead to the other so your point is moot.

@Mb
If we accepted your attitude, then campaigning to clean up the streetscape should be the last thing people should be concerned about is campaigning for trees in Brockley.

As for a council providing hanging baskets to enhance an area you must think they are crazy.

I'm surprised Mary Portas hasn't realised every parade needs a rusting sea container.

Mb said...

My response was to the comment of "ranking" the container to criminal behaviours including firearm incidents. Ranking suggests that the incidents are placed in some kind of priority or order of seriousness. I put gunshots above containers. I want both sorted, I want trees and baskets too. I've said on several occasions in the past that they should remove it.

They are not "equal ranked" the owners are thoughtless, they are not criminals.

Nice try at conflating the two issues, a little desperate but I commend your perseverance.

A very drole musical video by two befezzed artistes extolling the culinary heritage of their kebab emporium.

Maybe they can apply their considerable artistic talents to giving that ugly sea container a makeover.

Otherwise there are enough artists in Brockley to give them a hand.

Anonymous said...

I'd take the honest residents of Upper Brockley Roaf over the container

Anonymous said...

So, are you more bullet proof than a sea container?

Honest troll said...

Sea contaner honest. UBR drug wee-ing peeple honest. But must chhoose?
So confoosed.

(What feels, at least like) thirty years of whining about that damn seacontainer and now it's gone, what happens? Choirs of angels; A hearty int'net backslap from the former steam from the ears crew, nothing? Nada? Not a sausage.
I may have missed something I s'pose. I forgot to look in the label cloud under Seacontainer.

Dinner there tonight was a treat, Hazlenut and squid...oh yes.

Brockley Nick said...

There's a whole article devoted to it. Enjoy.

NAT said...

Thought there must be, at least an article, if not a comic strip or a light opera, but checked under restaurants and couldn't see that.
