Brockley Market - 1 year old this weekend

Brockley Market, winner of the 2011 newcomer of the year award, celebrates its first birthday this Saturday, with a band from 11am and some of the regular stallholders trying a few new things. Given how big a part it now plays in local life, it's amazing that it's only a year old.


On Sunday, the Brockley Market team will learn their fate in the BBC Food and Farming Awards, for which they have been shortlisted in the Best Food Market category.

The shortlist of 10 markets will be whittled down to three this Sunday and will be announced on the food programme on Radio 4 at 12.30pm

Fantastic! Well done Brockley Market. I try to do fair proportion of my grocery shopping there, but where's fish stall gone? That was one of my favourites.

Fish man is unwell at the mo, I understand Toby is looking at the fish situation....

The street food stalls are great, but yes a few more Market stalls are needed.

Overall 9.5/10. It's part of my weekend routine now.

The stall at brockley market is expensive, it's also stunningly fresh.. A stall selling fish of dubious age wouldn't be different to lewi or deptford. It works because its offering something the others don't, and I speak as someone who loves deptford market.

It's not competing with them really, what would be the point? They are successful on their own terms

Great stuff, for this market and Brockley.

A year in business is an achievement. Well done.

I don't go every week, but I enjoy the market each time I go. I was thinking why I don't go at every opportunity and it's price does play a factor. You can spend £30 so easily and not have that much to show for it.
It's the 'brunch' that does it, you get lured in by the burgers, wraps and coffee and thats around 15 quid right there, then a few baked goods to take away. All good quality but very wallet lightening.

Some of the veg stalls are the unsung heroes of the market in terms of offering quality/value.

The market has to keep innovating, as there are lots of fine food markets emerging in locales.

In Upton Park they have One Pound Fish. Why can't Brockley join in with this sort of fare?

As Mb said, if you want stunning value - but of a quality you have to cook straight away - there's Deptford or Lewisham. If you want fish so fresh it's practically winking at you - and brunch while you are buying it - Brockley. Isn't it so great that we have a choice?

Thank you Toby for your entrepreneurship and LBL for still supporting it's street markets. The one in Bromley North is being slowly strangled to death with red tape.

I would prefer a middle ground fishmonger, where you know its fresh but doesnt cost £20+ per kilo.

Surely this is possible?

If you can buy four seabass for a tenner it's likely that they are both small (and therefore young) and either farmed or trawled up industrially, none of which is doing ocean fish stocks any favours. (You probably won't be told anything about where your fish has come from, incidentally, but apparently it's still the "honest" way.)

If, on the other hand, you buy a good sized seabass (that will feed three or four hungry mouths) it's likely to have been both line-caught and lived to an age when it's done its bit for the creation of future seabass generations. Simple economics dictate that you can't supply huge volumes this way and you'd therefore expect to pay more for the privelege. I'm not sure how much of a middle-ground there is.

Each to their own.

Anon, why should fish have to cost less than £20 per kg when it is a finite resource which is difficult, expensive and often dangerous to catch? Fair enough for (currently) plentiful stocks landed in this country eg mackerel or dab, but for other varieties how would a fishmonger cover the market price?
Although, if ur an early riser you can always travel up to Biilingsgate for a direct from the seller price, still think you'll be surprised

4 for £10 seabass is all farmed which is much more sustainable than anything caught out of the sea.

If everyone was eating line caught sea bass it wouldnt be sustainable any more - the only thing that stops this is the fact that less well off people cant afford it.

@anon 0925 Agreed farmed fish are sustainable, and if that's what you get for your tenner then fair enough. There are still huge trawlers out there catching fish indiscriminately, though, and when endangered catch from these boats end up in the bargain buckets then we have a problem.

I don't believe you can industrialise line-catching to an extent that you'll have a serious impact on ocean sustainability. It will therefore (rightly) always be more expensive. I don't happen to buy it very often but if I was in the market (as it were) for seabass that's where I'd rather go. I happen to think a fish that's been living naturally is likely to taste better. I recognise it will be more expensive, which means it will only ever be a rare treat.

Re farmed fish- not necessarily more sustainable, no, it can consume huge quantities of water and creates waste contaminated with antibiotics & growth hormones which can end up back in the water source and affect wild fish stocks and other organisms, including us, here at the top of the food chain! It has, like all farming, to be responsible.
I agree with Ben each to their own but hope that means informed choices, not, as I said earlier, sham-ignorant trolling.

I bought a line caught 5.5 lb sea bass at the Oval market. Cost £27-50, which is really cheap.

For middle range fish-mongers - Sopers in Nunhead have been often referred to on this blog (although I have never made it over there myself). There's the stall I currently use in Catford Market (in the mall under the all-seeing cat, just opposite Tescos) and I believe the fishmonger displaced from the Bromley market who I used to buy from on a weekly basis is now in Plassey Place in Eltham.

All requiring travel - but the Geordies coming to sell from a van on your doorstep don't often seem to make it to South London. I imagine the price of diesel has put paid to that enterprise.

I find the Catford stall a bit limited actually, nothing wrong with it if you like cod but ask anything besides...

I now buy at Lewisham Market, there's a decent one near St Saviour's Church or if I'm in the mood for a long walk I go to Deptford where there's what I think as the only proper fishmonger in Lewisham "myfish" 69 Deptford High Street.

Cod or smoked haddock - which is about as far as I go. (When making fish pie put a couple of bay leaves into the milk as you poach the fish - an inspired brainwave from my teenage son - delicious.)
A friend a few days ago who used to live in the area was recommending swordfish - as tasting like pork chops - and the fish counter in Sainsburys. Particularly late at night when they were getting rid of stuff they would otherwise have to bin. The lady there would apparently weigh and label one portion then throw on three or four more.

Nothing wrong whatsoever with smoked haddok and fish pie but last week my daughter at the question what do you want to eat after school replied "Octopus salad" and in that case the only option is Deptford.
