Brockley badminton

Badminton is the sport of kings and more players are needed for the local Thursday night Badminton sessions. Ian writes:

Every Thursday at 20:00 at Haberdashers Sports hall, St Asaph Road, there is a Badminton session, all abilities are welcome.

Session lasts from 20:00 – 22:00 and costs £8.

We generally play doubles and mix up the teams as the evening progresses.

Just turn up and play. Entrance is at the top of St Asaph Road, you can’t miss the Sports hall.  Bring a racket, shuttles are provided.

Glad to hear shuttles are provided. Does it head to St Johns because that's where I live and I don't have a car. A shuttle would be really welcome!

On a side note, are cocks also provided?

sounds great, been looking for a club for ages. but doubles only? that's a shame. and are the shuttles cork based? (questions coming from a badminton nerd, sorry).

Typical Brockley response. What are the shuttlecocks made out of for christs sake...

Typical angry Anonymous response to an innocent question - the asker even aplogises for the nerdiness of it! Calm yourself down - you sound like a dick.

Yes, typical Brockley person with a knowledge of and passion for a subject and an enquiring mind, undulled by a constant diet of honest fare.

£8 for a two-hour session is comparable to anywhere else in the area, if playing singles at least. I usually play at The Bridge leisure centre in Lower Sydenham. I'm pretty sure it's £8 per hour for a court, so £4 per hour per player. I'd pay more for the convenience of a local session. Will come along if I can.

The shuttles are competition standard, feathered type (natch).

The price is based on the cost of hiring the courts and shuttles. If enough people play regularly we might be able to reduce this.

Singles IS played when there's space.

cheers ian. feathered shuttles eh? brilliant, even better than cork based :) might see you down there one tursday soon.

feathered shuttles . . . what poor bird has had to suffer to provide a game to a dimwit, and the cork! The amazon cork forests must be depleted enough - you're going to tell me rubber is involved aren't you?

ah the rubber forests of wherever they grow etc etc

Feathers probably come from some poor chicken that died to make someone's fried chicken dinner (aka honest fare), cork forests are largely in southern Europe and are important wildlife habitats, unfortunately due to the rise of plastic 'corks'and screw top wine bottles, many are being chopped down having been owned by the same family for hundreds of years. So using cork is actually a good thing...

do you have to come with a partner in order to play doubles or will u get a game?

Brockley Dogging Society said...

Don't worry about bringing a partner - we've a very healthy buddy-up system and plenty of spare 'cocks!

Scott said...

I assume there are changing facilities? Is there a website with more info?

Brockley Ian said...

No need to bring a partner to get a game, although the more merrier.
There are changing facilities.
There is no website, all details are on this thread.

Hey, is there any chance of borrowing a racket? Also, what's the standard of play? I wouldn't wanna turn up and let my teammate down!

Brockley Dogging Society said...

We are happy for members to make a racket but if so they must be willing to share cocks.
