Canadian pop-up diner at the Brockley Mess

Alex writes:

On the 12th December, local chef John Murray is hosting a popup evening at The Brockley Mess. The theme of the evening is inspired by Canadian cuisine and will be divided into 2 seatings.

Diners will be able to choose from a 3 course menu inspired by the chef's homeland. We've set up a site where all the details can be found http://threedozen.blogspot.co.uk/

No Poutine????? S'pose for £35 you want more than cheesy chips....

No poutine, no maple syrup.
Unless he's showing the hockey in the background and has a mullet, I'm not believeing he's Canadian at all.....

Out of interest, do we have (m)any Canadian BCers?

@Anon 10.04 - Doesn't maple glazed salmon count?

I know its been said before with pop-up dining - but the price seems extorniate for the menu.

Even if you take off a generous £5 for the welcome drink, an average of £10 a course seems high for bagels, burgers, and pie.

Please dont tell me I can choose not to go - I realise this - it's just a valid observation.

To be precise, any new restaurant gets told off for being too expensive. And yet, they all seem to be really popular. So perhaps their prices are just right.

As you say, there is a simple answer...

Even as a relatively homesick Canadian in Brockley, I can't say I'm tempted. A bagel starter? Pumpkin pie as a main course?

And what about real French Canadian cuisine (and I don't mean cured meat from Montreal)? Or an aboriginal influence?

Put a wild rice casserole, some bouchees or scalloped potatoes on the menu however, and I'm there....

I am sure that after a long days labour chopping down trees, if a lumberjack were presented with pumpkin pie for his evening repast, the waiter would end up wearing a moose head.

On pricing comments, it does seem steep for what's on the menu & the context. Locally I'd expect to pay maybe £6 tops for a pud, £7 for a starter: £22 for a burger and a drink is a lot!

Assuming this is the John Murray involved, http://www.chefdb.com/nm/22218/John-Murray, (he's worked in Toronto and London so presumably is the guy), I'd imagine the names of the food on the menu is underselling what you will actually get? There's a few Michelin starred places on the CV.

I can vouch for that>

I ate at a private dining at his old restuarant Vinoteca and the food was amazing.

The price is very good value. I chef of this quality wouldn't set up a permanent restaurant in Brockley. We're lucky to have him on our doorstep and willing to offer something to the community.

As a one off its a must do for the area's foodies.

[Slaps forehead] I get it, it's a secret club! No mention in above post of chefs pedigree, dumbed down menu- only community members in the know (aka "local foodies") would be aware that 35quid for a 3 course and 2 hours to eat it in a local caff is a "steal"! Thanks to Anon above for uncovering their cunning ruse, I now want to go & join their party!

well this displaced Canuck is booked!

can't w8 4 my 'montreal smoked meat' & as a Canuck who's been living in bighty for 22 years, I sure miss good smoked meat sandwiches which the Brits don't seem 2 know how 2 get right, although, prefer rye. hope it comes with plenty of mustard &: a gherkin ;-P

I can vouch for John's grub & that he's a true great white north dude from t'under bay & trained with some of the top chefs in TO including one of my faves Sasur Lee, the chef at Queen St's Peter Pan bistro & launched his first diner 'Lotus" off Bathurst & now has a string of top diners in TO & across major cities in the States including the big apple - we are so lucky that John not only came 2 blighty, but settled in Lewisham ;-)

don't miss out on this once only treat in our 'hood & book your table now! ;-P
