Smiles Thai Cafe closed?
Smiles Thai Cafe, the Foxberry Road restaurant, has been closed for several months. Until its closure, it was incredibly popular and a mainstay of Brockley Central's diet.
On the Brockley Forum, another person has asked whether its closure is permanent - we'd like to know too. If anyone has any information about its status, please let us know.
UPDATE: Trusted Brockley expert Robert explains (below) that Smiles is most-likely undergoing a refurbishment. Our world just got a little brighter.

Mr Lawerence's and Smile's, It is like a dagger in the heart.
I believe they are about to refurbish. A planning application was approved last year.
That would be great.
The 70s wood panelling and ropey old decor was part of its charm.
Agreed. But so long as they are coming back, I'm prepared to let it go.
That is GREAT news! Suffering withdrawal!
Yes I'd rather they were open with a facelift than not at all.
Spoke to them on the phone a couple of weeks ago, they told me the were refurbishing and would be open again this month. Thank god!
That's very good news. I've been calling on and off for months!
The twice I've been past recently the lights have been on inside, so hopefully that is a helpful sign.
'Just Thai Thai' only five minutes walk away on Brockley Road doesn't seem too bad on the couple of times I've been there. Could be worth checking out for all those with Smiles withdrawls.
Agree that 'Thai Thai' is great. Simple tasty food, decent value with good service. Decor is not too classy though!
There is no comparison between Smiles and Thai Thai. One is usually full, the other usually empty. The reasons for this have been discussed before on this blog. If you two have had a good experience there, that is great. But for restaurants to handle more than one or two tables at a time, they need to be well organised and have all the necessary staff on hand. Smiles has that.
Can any recommend a good Thai restaurant that does hot involve a trip on the Overground?
The Thailand on lewisham way opposite Goldsmiths probably does the best thai food in the area.
The Thai restaurant behind Skeehan's pub up on Telegraph Hill is excellent. Thai Orchard in Forest Hill also recommended

It's been a few years since I went, but the Mantanah in Sth Norwood did the most authentic Isaan food I've eaten in the UK. If you like your larb moo with skin, hairs and all, that's the place to go.
Ech.
what is going on guys? it's been too long!
i love the food in smiles sorry it is now closed hop it opens again soon
Got off a plane from Bangkok on Tuesday and bumped in to Mr & Mrs Smiles who'd been visiting family, so maybe they'll be reopening soon.
