Thank you Dave

Sounds Around, the Brockley Road shop, is currently closed due to the death of Dave, who ran the store with his family for decades. It's terribly sad news - Dave was one of the loveliest people we've ever met. Kind, patient and friendly at all times, he helped make Sounds Around (which began as a Harefield Road record store in the 1960s, founded by Dave's father) one of Brockley's greatest treasures.

Brockley Central readers have already posted their condolences elsewhere on the site and we've been inundated with messages about him. If anyone deserves a dedicated place on Brockley Central, it's Dave.

The photo of Dave is from Julia Keil's Brockley collection and there is a lovely vignette about the effect Dave had on his customers here.

Lovely man, lovely shop, lovely people.  I place where I knew I could send my young children on their own knowing they would be treated with courtesy and honesty.  Thank you, Dave and Sounds Around for being an important part in their growing up.

Dave started video hire before blockbuster and just out lasts them, his passing will be missed more to me than blockbuster as he had a personal touch to shopping. He did things the old fashion way dressed his own window, stocked up at the warehouse fitted batteries didn't just sell them.
His commitment to his mum and family typified him i do hope the shock isnt to much for her and the rest of the family, for a child to enter sounds around was a safe place full of interest and pleasure and priced to be pocket money friendly.

I am truly gutted to hear this. Dave was a good friend to me after moving here 7 years ago. It won't be the same without him.

So sorry to hear that :( Dave has been always very helpful and I have also bought my loyal kettle at Sounds Around. Sad news!

What a great businessman, shopkeeper and all-round decent local man. I so hope the family and the business can survive the loss.

You really don't know what you have until you lose it. I was looking for an A4  photo frame today in another Brockley shop which didn't have one. When I said to the owner 'of course Sounds Around would have had one' we both nearly cried.

Perhaps a wreath from BC might be a nice gesture to show how much Dave was appreciated in these parts? I am sure a door to door collection in the streets either side of the station by a trusted local individual (can of worms alert) might garner something?

For years I've popped  in most days to have a browse of the DVD and a quick chat with Dave and his mum. A proper shop and a boon to the community.  Bye Dave, we are all going to miss you,

This is such sad news. Dave was a shop keeper of a
different generation whose like will simply not be seen again. Friendly,
respectful, helpful, sincere, cheerful, practical and kind - the nicest person
you could hope to meet. It is a huge loss for his family and for Brockley. He
was truly well respected and admired across the whole local community and will be greatly missed by everybody. At this
difficult time I wish his family well and want to express my condolences but
also my gratitude to Dave and his family for all they have done in Brockley.

So so sad, Dave was a Brockley legend and a bit of old school Brockley has died with him. He always sold those things that no one else ever did and cheaper than any where else. A visit to Sounds Around was always a pleasure for young and old, always a welcome, always a bargain to be had.
He scarcely had a day off and worked tirelessly to keep Sounds Around going through thick and thin and through the changing times.
He will be missed more than he will ever know and a lot of people will be deeply saddened by his loss. There will be a lot of people walking past Sounds Around shedding a tear as the news breaks out.
Dave, a true Gent, RIP

I have known Dave and his mum since I was a little girl. Cannot image Brockley without Dave being in it. You knew that you would either get what you required or Dave would try and get it in for you. He was like everyones uncle and all the children were served by Dave with a smile and he always had the patience too wait for them too make their minds up of what they wanted. Our hears and thoughts go out too all of Dave's family. Lets hope that the family will continue too run the shop in Dave's memory.

Nick, I was wondering if Dave had a particular charity  or cause he supported that people could contribute to in his memory? Seeing the number of comments here makes me think a lot of people would like to mark his passing in some way. I only met him, a few times but he was such a gentleman, and he has touched a lot of people's lives.

Arnie and I are both really sad to hear the news about Dave at Sounds Around. We were regular customers and have been years. Would could get all manner of arcane stuff from there or Dave would make a note to remind him for his next visit to the wholesaler. Lovely man. Patient. A shop like no other. Locked in another time. Hard to see how it can continue without him. So sad. Brockley changes and moves on but not always for the better and he will be sorely missed. Sally and Arnie Dobbs

The closed Sounds Around shop is one of the saddest sites in Brockley at the moment.   Quite a nice small tribute to Dave here:

There is a note up in the window, with details of Dave's funeral. I think it said it's on the 1st of March.

Just found out about this sad news today. I used to buy all my TDK tape cassettes and duracell batteries which I used to record my busking sessions with from Dave in sounds around. I've got hundreds must of been in so many times. It always felt like stepping into a shop from the 70's kind if like a time capsule. These shops and there owners are sadly becoming a dying breed. I hope the family can still run this fantastic shop. Thanks Dave Rest in peace. Lewis
